Chuck and Captain Kangaroo Make Me Think: Banana Man!

Rate: 13 Flag
Apparently, the original Banana Man was A. Robins, a 1930s vaudvillian. But I remember seeing this guy, Sam Levine, on Captain Kangaroo when I was a kid.
I'd park myself in front of the black-and-white, eating my cornflakes and wearing my footie pajamas. Did you?
A little of this goes a long way, but it's ALL classic shtick.

Stuff like this was a primary influence on boomer socialization. No wonder we're in trouble!

The Banana Man scared me silly. But I loved Captain Kangaroo. Boomer socialization influences for sure. No footie PJ's, but lots of corn flakes with extra sugar.
Ooh, how I loved Captain Kangaroo!
Oh yes! I could not dress for school until I got the weather from Captain Kangaroo! xox
Definitely watched the good Captain, though sans footies and with Wheaties instead of corn flakes. Man, I thought Harpo carried a lost of stuff in his pockets!
OMG THANK YOU!!! He is one of my all times favs...when he goes, "ooohhhh....and la-la-la-la-la" it makes me smile.

People have looked at me like I am crazy when I ask if they know "The Banana Man"...and I never could remember where I saw him, only that I did and loved him. I'll be visiting often just to watch the clip!

What a great gift for the first day of the year!!! WAHOOOOOOO!!
I do remember this. Thanks, I think.
I hate to admit I remember this cause I'm old. But I wish my Grandson could see it. Good humor today is somewhat lacking in kids!
I wonder what little kids today would think about this. If anyone has little kids to experiment on, could you do that and report back?
Told you he was on YouTube.
Thank you for loosing him on unsuspecting OS readers.
PS: New Year's Eve? I activated the Holographic Date program
and we went out on the town, drank champagne, partied,
exchanged kisses at midnight, then, before things got too
weird, I deactivated him.
Sugar Pops was my thing. I'd watch anything if I could watch it eating Sugar Pops. Couldn't watch the whole thing here. Only made it through three minutes or so. Probably 'cause I kicked Sugar Pops ages ago.
You remind that as a mother, I used to say to my toddler, "Go and watch Captain Kangaroo. Mommy is writing a book."

Am still not sure whether I should feel guilty about that, but you make me feel better because KC was kid friendly.

ROFL
PS love the new pic!
I am named after Cosmo Allegretti
Good golly, miss molly. My mother told me I'd go blind if I watched this. Guess I now know why.

I've always been more of a giraffe man, anyways.
I don't remember this guy -- what year was he on?
Wikipedia says he was on in the 1950s--Ed Sullivan, too.
ah, that would explain it -- I wouldn't have been watching tv until at least '58 and I don't know if we even HAD a tv then.
Banana man was pretty absurd for Captain Kangaroo. When I saw Andy Kaufman in the 80's, I knew where he got his inspiration.
Love the piece! Sooooo goofy!
Well, I can see what my nightmares will be about tonite. Thanks!

Great new photo, btw!
Lovely new picture HB! Remember the Captn, and Mr. Green Jeans well. R
When I was a mere slip of a lad, I LOVED the Banana Man!! He used to appear on a Saturday morning TV show -- the name escapes me. It was an absolute wonder watching him pull a train and the stuff to fill it out of his oversized coat. The load included bunches and bunches of fake bananas -- thus the Banana Man. I still have no idea how he did it.

Harry Chapin had a song about a truck wreck in PA that involved 50,000 pounds of bananas, and every time I heard it, I thot of the Banana Man.
