Dear Seventeen . . .

Rate: 26 Flag

               Seventeen

So, here you are. You’re on your own. You’re elated to be free, but you feel anxious, too. You do so many things alone. You’ll do many more things that way, and for a long time the only person you’ll trust is yourself.

You don’t know this yet, but some people don’t need to ruminate and plan and predict the next thing.  Some people have a place to stand that’s steady instead of needing to balance everything constantly. Some people don’t mind it if their seams show—if they break a dish or get a bad grade.

No one hit you or said unkind things when you were a child. Your father drove you to school. You’ve had orthodontia, and you’re getting a check every month for college. How could you possibly know what's wrong?

Later in life, when people ask about your childhood, you’ll say you were raised by wolves. And after that,  you’ll say you used to tell people you were raised by wolves, but wolves would have been a lot more nurturing. Finally, you’ll be able to describe your parents by saying, “They were very limited people.”

Seventeen, I wish you didn’t have to feel so serious. I wish you could know that even though you think by thinking so much you have control, that's just an illusion. You’ll always be a cautious person, but trust me, as time goes on, you'll feel better.  As the years pass, you'll grow wise, and so you should listen to me:

If people try to love you, you should let them.

With all my heart,

Hells Bells

The platform shoes say it all.
Aww. . . This makes me wish I'd been a lot nicer to you.
Then, I wish I'd been nicer to myself, too. xxx
All these 17 posts make me glad I grew up. Well done, Bells
This: " You don’t know this yet, but some people don’t need to ruminate and plan and predict the next thing." Words I still live by.
This moved me, HB. Good advice, warmly and affirmatively stated . . . "If people try to love you, you should let them." Why is that so hard to learn?
Oh yeah, and before I forget: the girl in the picture is serious, but smoldering . . . your current av is still smoldering, but a bit lighter, I think.
I didn't have the guts to put up a picture of me at 17, but then I didn't look like you You look lovely and lusty even in black and white and even with those godawful shoes.
This was terrific...
i understand
my last two paintings have been of coyotes
That young lady looks strikingly formidable. Her more experienced version looks strong but warm--the person who could write this good advice.
I have loved reading all of these "Letters to Me". They have all been wonderful. Though the advice we would give ourselves is different the undercurrent of love for our younger selves runs through them all.
This is great! I wish you had written these letters to me when I was 17. It's funny how when you're a teenager you think you know everything, but by the time you're 40, you start to learn how much you don't know
You write well for someone who was raised by wolves. Most wolf-raised poets read like Bukowski on airplane glue.

Nice pic.
"If people try to love you, you should let them."
Words we all need, regardless of name.
I would have so done you.

Such a very short and powerful letter. I really loved this.

And I really love you!
Isn't it strange how, despite ourselves and our misguided defenses, our hearts get bigger .
"If people try to love you, you should let them." It takes so much time to learn about that, about love. Lovely little insight into the workings of Hells Bells. Thank you.
I have been so caught up in reading these "17" posts, I have not posted in days.

I enjoyed this and wish you could really tell her to let people love her.

Beautiful and clear. Much more self possessed than any I have read that seem to concentrate on relationships more than self knowledge. Your picture is awesome, yes the shoes tell a tale.
I really enjoyed this post! Excellent letter, well said, compassionately said. Oh. That's redundant, isn't it? ~r for exceptional style, sage wisdom, and a wonderful photo - and for the courage to post a picture of yourself at any age wearing platforms (But seriously - were platforms any worse than bell bottoms, hip huggers, or .... Oh. I see your point.) - Truly, Hells Bells, I so much enjoyed reading this - THANKS!
Arrrroooooooooo.... My parents threatened to toss me to the wolves if I didn't shape up. Seeing as how you turned out, I might should've taken them up on it. (r)
I love the picture and the story was just as great. Nicely done.
17, for girls probably one of the toughest ages of all. I was also fairly serious at 17. Those shoes rock, btw ...
You seem to have figured things out nicely, thank you very much. Your older self seems more comfortable, and just as lovely as younger you.
You do look very serious in that picture.

"...raised by wolves"--me too. Love the story and the picture is the perfect complement-so well done.
I would have known you then. But maybe I did...
I really enjoyed this. It was a wonderful letter to yourself.
Ah, Hells, this was great to read. I'll bet broken dishes are no longer a problem! Remember, we are taught to love stuff. Learning stuff is only stuff is how we know have arrived! Great post.
PS. my first avatar is me at 17. I don't have the guts to write the 17 letter until I figure out which of the myriad mistakes to warn myself about. Just sayin'

This makes me sad.

Good writing, as always.
This is so touching, HB.
I was thinking of something similar myself this week (as I was becoming exhausted with interactions with teenage daughter). That is one fantastic picture.
wonderful wisdom - and terrific picture.
