I Got a Dog, Dog, Dog

Here's a real empty nest syndrome move: I got a dog. Kids are pretty much out of the house, and I just really, really needed to have something to take care of and be responsible for.

Okay, I already have two cats, but they're CATS.

Rosie is a 3-year-old rescue from the Humane Society--a boxer. My friend down the street has had two boxers, and I guess I got hooked on the breed. They're prone to cancer and all manner of other ailments, and a 10-year-old boxer is positively ancient, but they are goofy, goofy, goofy and fun.

Someone cropped her ears and then didn't follow through, so as you can see, one of them turns backward over the top of her head, while the other one flops down. She has a droopy eye, and when the vet looked in her mouth, even he was aghast at the level of snaggle. She's had pups, and her teats flop around when she walks.

So it's not a great look--so what? These minor flaws, if you can even call them flaws, don't appear to have any effect whatsoever on Rosie's self-esteem. That's the good thing about dogs. Big dogs, little dogs, old dogs, three-legged dogs, dogs with scrofula . . . they're all dogs in the eyes of other dogs. No better, no worse, just turn around so I can sniff your butt.

And every morning when I wake up and throw my legs over the side of the bed, she is just thrilled that I am STILL ALIVE and that she's a STILL A DOG, by god. Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle.

It was Rosie or an increase on  antidepressants and an elliptical machine. Bless her heart--I can count on Rosie not to think it's a good idea to just sit on the couch and have another glass of wine instead of going for a walk. And if I do want to sit on the couch, I can count on her to think it's the best thing in the world to just sit there with me. With her 10-pound head in my lap.

Matter of fact, better bundle up, put my shoes on, and find the leash.
Bless you for not just adopting a rescue, but an adult one at that!!! May you awake to many more happy, drooly days!!!
One of the best friends I ever had was a rescue Dobie many years ago. If you and Rosie are half as close as Bennie Belle and I were then I'd say you done good!!! Hope we get to hear "puppy dog tales!" Oh, wait - Boxers got docks, not tails, don't they? Well - maybe you can write some little essays from time to time - we'll call them (wait for it - here it comes....) BOXER SHORTS!!!!!
Congrats and Rosie is a very lucky girl. Now bond.
Thanks for stopping by. I want you all to know that Rosie took a very satisfactory dump.
Floppy teats would be enough reason to adopt her -- add in the goofy and you've got a girls night every day of the week! Enjoy your new pup. They do bring spark into our lives, and they give as much in the way of nurturing as they take.
Enjoy every moment. She's a keeper!
That's the thing about dogs--you HAVE to get out with them. Good thinking on your part. I understand about the cats being independent and everything, but I have learned to love my cat like my dog, and good for you for keeping Rosie comfy. Dogs are appreciative, that's what I love about them.
You've been missed. Havn't gotten there myself yet. Still trying to achieve the "empty nest" status...but they keep coming back!!
Cheers, all! My older cat came out today and sat on the dining room table on some page proof I was supposed to be reading, so that's good, but the younger one is still all puffy about it. He's like, why did you bring this smelly homeless person into my well-ordered domain?
I had so much fun with the first one, I now have two.
Rosie is a beauty.

Hey wait...what's wrong with cats? PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT!!!

Cute puppy though, so, RATED!! :)
Got a rescue dog about a year ago. They are soooo grateful. And you're right about the empty nest thing -- my wife is so happy to have something live to dote on again. I just wish she would stop breastfeeding the poor animal.
Gak, John. That's NOT a mental picture I wanted to have.
Say no to elliptical machines! Rosie or abilify?

Rosie's droopy eye is precious.
What a face she has--I love that face--now I want a dog too...just when I was getting used to the empty nest.
What a nice doggie. I, myself, did the same except mine is a four pound chihuahua. She is my constant companion and won't let me get too sad about anything.
Better a beastie than an elliptical machine any day!

Congrats she looks fab.
Yes what a great, wonderful choice in a rescued puppy. Love no matter what that is what a dog offers. I hope you enjoyed your walk!
Adorable! Love him! gentle hint: I'd still get the elliptical - can't beat the endorphines!
Hurrah for you...and Rosie!!!!
She is beautiful in her original look. Have a wonderful and long relationship, filled with love.
Cool. I am getting one this Spring too. She kind of reminds me of my late Great Aunt after 5 Harvey Wallbangers at the Sons of Norway Hall in Seattle, circa 1988.
Good for you! Ugly is the new.....uh, black?

Save the pups, they will save YOU! Love you for rescuing this one!
You dog magnet, you! He's adorable. I wish the two of you many happy (new) years together!
she's adorable, I'm more of a cat person but I get why a dog could be a better match
