Bio
My Marine and I have been married sixteen years and counting. We love each other a great deal, even if our day to day existence can get quite testy. We say we are each other's last spouse. CC was hit by recoilless rifle round in Vietnam in 1969 and was retired from the Marines with over 100% in disabilities. He has led a colorful life and now struggles as his mobility deteriorates and the amount of pain he is in accelerates. I am the Aaron to his Moses because I am his story teller, the chronicler of his escapades. This blog is mostly about our current VA experiences and what is like to live with a war veteran 40 years after the fact of war. PS, I am friending all who are veterans, or families of veterans (whether I agree with their posts or not) This is to make this a site where you can see the full diversity of those who pay for our wars. So if you "come out" as a veteran, family member or someone devoted to their issues, I will friend you.

CC's been sitting outside of WalMart in Forsyth, going on his third day. He and other Marine Corps League friends are collecting toys and money for the the Annual Toys for Tots program. All the toys and money being given at this location are distributed within this county.

These veterans, stoically standing (or in CC's instance, sitting) are touchstones for shoppers passing through the doors. Typical America, with all its vainglorious and loud living, rarely gives people the opportunity to tell how their lives have been touched by themselves or loved ones serving in the US Armed Services.

These sentinel veterans are like wishing wells, with contributors throwing toys, dollars and stories as prayers and wishes for those who serve and children with needs.

As CC left for his last day, he told me these three stories.

"A young man stopped when he saw my purple heart and thanked me for my service. He'd served three tours in Iraq. He was young, in his twenties, but his eyes were old."

"Another lady stopped and told me she had two brothers and a cousin who had gone to Vietnam. Now, she has a grandson in Iraq. She thanked me for my service."

One lady showed me a picture of her grandson who has had cancer. Last year, he got some of these toys we collected and it had made his Christmas. Now he is doing better."

Made me weep...for CC's hard-bitten knowledge, for the young guy's sad experience. Keep posting. America needs to know...and I need to never forget. Thank you.
As soon as my husband told me about the guys old eyes, I knew this material worthy of writing and sharing. I hope to have more of these stories when he comes home this afternoon. I'll post them.
So glad CC is doing this . . . sounds like it does his heart good . . .
(sounds like it's doing yours some good too . . . )
As someone living with a disability, I can't tell you how good it makes my heart feel to see or hear another disabled man or woman saying, through their actions "so-and-so needs more help than I do. let's help them together"

God what a great message (that may escape most people)
Michelle and I donated turkeys, canned goods, and help to our local Homeless Veteran Outreach shelter before Thanksgiving, and the amount of items brought to us without solicitation was incredible. There are people out there. My best to you and CC, and Thanks.
older/exasperated....Be well.
