A Reply To An OS Email: On War, the Military, and Obama

Rate: 10 Flag

I know ya'll don't have the original email sent to me to view but I thought I'd post my messy response as it touches on several of my personal positions.

Original email 17 November 0650 am

 Good Morning,

I have been a long time lurker on OS. I only recently established an account so I could comment on the many posts that struck my fancy. I did not think it would take me so long to post here as I have a couple of other blogs I maintain.

I often get upset when speaking to Americans at home over their (or my percieved) lack of action in regards to the restriction of their civil rights. I constantly just BARELY hold on to my temper when I hear people fuss about their "right to bear arms" and yet say little to nothing about their rights to free speech, gather, have a speedy and fair trial, and not be subject to illegal searches or seizure. I HIGHLY disapprove of the PATRIOT Act (the name of the thing says it all doesn't it) and am frustrated by those that have come to agree it's too much and still do nothing.

I find the war in Afghanistan to have been a logical step. The Taliban SHOULD have been addressed years before then AND we shouldn't have left in 1991. I would have PREFFERED we had focused on eliminating Al Qaida and the Taliban and not shifted our entire focus to a war that made little to no sense in Iraq. At the time the Iraq war was spinning up it was the general consensus in my portion of the military community (USAF stationed with me in the UK) that the evidence presented was being taken COMPLETELY out of context and was BS. 5 years later we're vindicated but still there.

Afghanistan has never been conquered. Luckily that is not our goal here. I work in the command primarily tasked with the mentoring of the GoA and miltary forces so to get them up and running. There are issues...alot of issues...but we're on the right path. We are starting from the bottom, the ANP in the villages and districts, and building from there while working on the the leadership at the top. There are other issues in Afghanistan aside from the government and the Taliban. Considering the amounts of illegal opium produced here and that 90% of the world's heroin comes from here we couldn't just leave if we wanted to (though personally I'd suggest aiding AFG in turning the poppy into a national industry of some sort via the production of morphine and tyenol). The fact is Afghanistan is the fourth poorest country in the world and even after everything is said and done they don't have substanial resources to fall back on...or even that one resource known as black gold.

You view America today as different from the America you were taught about. I think that is where we differ. I always felt that in schools we teach a "golden" version of American history for indoctrination and propoganda purposes...all countries do. The annoyance I feel at that is why I'll likely never use my history degree to teach.

I am quite upset at some of the activity, the passing of three anti-equality bills, in the US...and also upset that I'm not there to join in on the protest to get them removed. I am "happy" that Americans are stepping up yet again in regards to opposing those horrendous "laws."

I am aware that President Elect Obama has alot on his plate. I am not expecting a miracle in regards to how we do (gov) business in the US. What I expect is competenance and the curtailing of all this executive order nonsense that has made Congress into an accessory. As far as his being a President of an Imperialist empire...empire does not work. At least not one which uses the military to a ridiculous extent as we do. The British Empire and the Soviet Union failed because they could not afford their empires. WE cannot afford our current activities so I'm sure our "Imperial" doctrine is at its end.

I already joined change.gov and hope the rest of the BO.com team shall do so as well. Since so many have invested time (and themselves) into this campaign, and now presidency, President Elect Obama cannot isolate himself. I did not join a personality cult...I elected a leader to get a job done based on his platform. I'm going to "trust" (for now) an elected official to stick to his platform and do what he says he'll do and that means being transparent and open to his electorate, the American people.

Hmm, I wrote this email kind of quickly so forgive any spelling and grammar errors. I might be a bit groggy and all over the place in this email since it's about 0650 and I came in a bit after 0500.

Siobhan

I'll be watching to see how many of Dubya's exec orders President Obama rescinds.

Thanx for this. It's great to hear the views of one who is actually involved.
Wayne,
I look forward to the answer to that question as well. I cringe everytime I open a news site and see a new Executive Order or change our lame duck is trying to push through before he leaves.
I'mnot sure how to respond as a third party to another's email but I am glad to see you posted again. #1 you write well. #2 you have more moral authority to comment on Iraq etc. than most people I have "met" here or elsewhere and I want to read what you want to write.

I hope you are staying safe. Take care of yourself.
Dorinda,

LOL, that is a good point I hadn't considered about posting my response to another's email. I'm not sure about having more moral authority than any other but I write about what I know...or rather what I think I know from my experiences.

Thank you for the compliment anyway!

It's funny you mention about posting here. I have tried to post two other times but due to the connection out here I get the no connection screen after I submit them. I have one of them that I happened to have half of but it needs to be finished since it's missing half.
Half of you may be worth several full posts of mine. I vote for posting the half.
The right "to bear arms" pisses me off to no end too... I have yet to see in my lifetime anyone's right to buy a gun taken away, unless that is they have NO right.

Great points, great post.

Hello, Siobhan.
I'm an old Nam grunt.
I voted for Barack.
I voted on principles, love of my country, what I believe it should be and the type of person I believe brings me hope.
Some other things i like about PRESIDENT OBAMA;
I find his voice easy to listen to.
It's soothing and exudes a true confidence which is in no way empty arrogance.
There is no undercurrent of the spoiled child who bullies others.
I feel respected by this man.
I feel this man TRULY and COMPLETELY respects his wife and children.
I believe he has the courage to do what he feels is right and follow through on those things.
I believe that he actually DOES listen to other points of view.
MY president is a refreshing 180o difference than the disgusting failure who invaded OUR government 8 years ago.
I believe bush to be a vulgar, selfish, reckless, arrogant, sexist, racist, greedy bastard.
I believe him to be a clone of his mother as can be attested to by her "beautiful mind" statement.
I wish you well and know how much fun it is not when one is in an invaded country.
Here is something which I stated when I sent around PRESIDENT OBAMA's youtube video.
It's exactly how I feel:
"This is MY president.
If you are not prepared to join with others like ME, the majority of Americans to work WITH our new AMERICAN PRESIDENT, you are an actual part of the problem and have no respect for AMERICA.
I don't much care what you think if you are against us merely because your candidate was soundly and roundly defeated by those of us who TRULY LOVE OUR COUNTRY.
Rather I have no time for those who are against making MY AMERICA what I feel it should be.
Either get on board or shut the fuck up and stop attempting to hurt our AMERICA.
Take it or leave it."
Love ya, lady! Keep up your posts. I hope we can withdraw from Iraq within the next year, as well as getting Afghanistan up on its feet soon. We need experienced people like you to get back yere are help the US rebuild! Keep safe and all good thoughts are with you.
Bless you young lady! I wish we could get more posts from military people like yourself. You have what we can't get from our media here, and that is your finger on the pulse of what is really happening and what you really think. I've heard of the idea of marketing rather than destroying the poppy crops. Sounds like a win win to me. I hear they do something similar in Turkey. Keep your chin up and your head down. Please post as often as you can. We need your perspective. Good luck. P.S. to RonSHHHHH, Right on,man!
I am in awe of you. I look forward to hearing more of your voice.
i loved that 'golden' history. it's possible to spay paint shit, i guess. then you spray on some epoxy, dust it with gold flakes- and yer back in 5th grade.

i broke out of the john wayne version during the vn war. once you've grasped that america's leaders are perfectly capable of mass murder, all of american history takes on a new meaning.

i'd like to straighten the world out, bring peace and justice to all. but i'm not in charge nor likely to be. even cleaning up america is awful hard, cause half like the way things are, and most are too busy to worry about anything past the next payday.

america's struggle with islam can't be won. bush wouldn't say why those planes flew into the towers, but there are reasons. there are reasons that, if positions were reversed, might lead you to sign up for the one-way plane ride. until you find out why you are hated, you're going to go on being hated.

just a little hint: police in new york city learned a top mafia don was attending his niece's wedding in queens. so they called in an air strike. 23 people dead, 80-odd seriously hurt. [insert foreign village for queens]

the list is endless. people who don't vote in american elections just don't count. maybe you don't give a damn about 'ragheads'. but every time you exterminate one of those middle-eastern untermenschen, 10 of his family swear revenge. some of them finally put together a program to get your attention, on september 11.

they have won, already. the congestion at airports, the telephone surveillance, the putrid secret prisons and rendition, the contempt in which america is held abroad, all were sparked by 19 men and a support team which supplied a bit of cash. every american has a lesser life from that one action.

at the core of america's thuggish foreign activities is a history of getting away with it. perhaps it's time to accept that assassinating foreign officials, overturning governments, sponsoring terrorism. financing surrogate wars and defending noisome dictatorships will no longer have no consequences in the 'homeland'.

the creation of a department of homeland security is recognition of that.
@ Al Loomis

Okay, just to be clear you comment was intended as a statement on America and it's place in the world and not actually related to my post correct?

Interesting take. Much of it I would agree with...and much of it I would disagree with.
@ GT...more than the right to bear arms nonsense one issue voting as a whole just ticks me off. It seems to imply that everything isn't connected and as long as your little niche is taken care of the gov can do whatever else it likes
Ron,

Yes, I also find the incoming President to be a refreshing change. During the Obama's 60 Minute interview to hear a President speak with a subject AND a predicate was so refreshing.
Lairderg,

I wouldn't say I'm what I need out here...what we REALLY need is trained police officers to train the ANP and trained farmers to build of the agriculture base. Thank you for the well wishes...love ya too *Siobhan winks*
Michael,

Well, I'm not posting as a military person per se. I'm posting from my knowledge and experience which the military happens to be a part of. I can only give a view of what I see...which will be tactically different depending on where you are. Marketing the problem could work...a few pharmaceutical companies come in and China helps stand up the copper mining and they are on the path.

I am all about staying safe...so my head stays under cover.
I constantly just BARELY hold on to my temper when I hear people fuss about their "right to bear arms" and yet say little to nothing about their rights to free speech, gather, have a speedy and fair trial, and not be subject to illegal searches or seizure.

I'm right there with you Siobhan! It drives me insane. Love the writing - keep it up and stay safe.
Dragonfly,

That is such a nice comment but there is nothing to be in awe of darling. I look forward to writing...though I'm sure a good bit of my posts will just be me venting on things that don't matter LOL
Julie,

So happy to have a fellow partner on my path to insanity. I'm thinking some sort of meditation and chanting might be the answer so I don't end up curled up in the fetal position from the ranting of the unreasonable and deliberately ignorant people around me
I highly agree what should be a police and peace corp job has become an extended military action. It would be interesting to investigate the reason the foreign policy establishment wants us there. I think it has more to do with keeping a foot hold in the area, oil pipelines and proximity to China than it ever had to do with the Taliban or Bin Laden. As mentioned in a letter to you before the USA was never concerned with the plight of the Afghan people living under theocracy until after 9/11. And if one theocracy is bad than what about another. It's hard to miss that we raise nary a cry about the Saudi regimes brutal theocracy or for that matter Israels oppression of the Palestinians.
Hipployta, it's good to hear from you again! Your post-election post was one of the first things I read on OS, and it's stayed with me. Be safe!
