Two Things For Which I Will Not Die: God and Country

Rate: 10 Flag

God

Sorry, God.

USA

Sorry, USA.

Men occasionally like to throw around these courageous quotes that end up in history books:

"Give me liberty or give me death!" -Patrick Henry

"We can not be sure to have something to live for unless we are willing to die for it." -Che Guavara

"I regret that I have but one life to give for my country." - Nathaniel Hawthorne

It's not that I don't think Patrick Henry was a great guy. I just think his wife should have whopped him upside the head.

Therefore, when the English/French/Mexicans/Alaskans/Finnish invade, let it be known there is one who is not willing to die for this US of A, and that is Hollycomesalive.  I welcome our future OverLords. It's nothing personal. I'm also not willing to die for God (and He's pretty important).

When I was a girl, I was taught about these Christian martyrs who were filletted alive, burned at the stake, boiled alive in oil, crucified upside down, etc etc because they refused to deny God. My question is, why didn't they just lie? I know I would have. God would know that I was just trying to save my ass and then we'd be cool again.

Same with America. No offense or anything, but I'm fairly confident that if I were ever drafted into the military, I would go to Canada ASAP. And if my husband were ever drafted into the military, he would get chloroformed, shoved in the trunk, and then we'd go to Canada ASAP.

Now, this is not to say that I am not grateful for the other Americans who have died protecting this country. That's just not a sacrifice I'm willing to make, or let my husband make. He'd probably be really upset when he woke up in Canada (something about honor, valor and bravery), but he'd get over it.

It's just that I place a really, really high value on being alive. I know I'm supposed to be willing to give my life for all of these things and the fact that I'm not probably makes me a coward. I can't help it. The only things I honestly feel are worth dying for are people. (And more specifically, two little people that happen to share 50% of my genetic material.)

Otherwise, y'all are on your own. So, Good Luck with that. I'll be somewhere hiding out in the Appalachians.

ffffeeeeeeeeeeeeeeddddd!!!!!!!!!!
hey, y'all come to my blog and read my post.
i almost posted a picture of mel gibson in braveheart with that face paint on, but decided against it.
i'm a great believer in patriotism, and if those bastards ever give back my country, i might die for it. they better hurry, father time is likely to get there first.

sometimes the best way to defend your kids is to get together with like-minded people and learn to fight as a group. so don't close out this 'patriotism' option right away.
Nicely said.

I would not die for God, Catholic as I am; I figure he/she can take care of him-/herself, and I'd look terrible in the paintings.

Before I had kids, I'd certainly consider dying for my country, depending on the circumstances; now, the U.S. of A. takes a backseat to SquidBoy and Evil Troll.

Canada is lovely. Besides, in 25 years, they'll have all the water.
I wouldn't die for my country (and certainly not for anyone's deity-idea), but there are causes for which I would lay down my bones...
I would lay down my life for my family and for freedom. But those are causes, separate from the other stuff.
Nationalism and Religion are both diseases humanity could do well without. monkey fingered.
I might die for my country..... but it depends:
1. Is it being invaded by someone really, really nasty and horrifying? If the US is being taken over by the SLURC of Myanmar I guess I would have to at least lie down and be a roadblock. If the US of A is being conquered by Canada, Sweden or Japan, I would probably say 'be my guest!'
2. How painful is it? I'm not too afraid to die. I just don't like that icky pain. If Al Qaeda wants to off me. Fine. I'm not even going to quarrel too much. Just do it quick please.
It seems like bragging to say what you'd die for before you do it. I hope I'd have the strength to die for a lot of things, but I also hope my strength is never tested. Far be it from all of us!
I'm with you.

1) Athiest. Enough said

2) "No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. " General George Patton
Hooray for you, Holly! I rated this based on the title, then read the whole post. You've said it - and I'm not willing to die for God (????? are you kidding????) or this ridonculous country either. I take it as my cause to give anyone who will listen a new perspective on this violent country of ours. If I can get all my 6 grandkids rounded up, we will be off to New Zealand at the first sign of trouble.

Wait - what's happening now is surely the first sign of trouble, isn't it??? **Thanks**
Rated. But, like, I wouldn't die for you.
I hope many, many millions of people are not willing to die for their countries, whatever those countries may be. That would create first a big political problem, another big top business problem (which nation would sell-buy weapons nobody would be going to use?), and after chaos and mayhem, if millions of us keep our word and refuse to fight, something very incredible would happen!! OK, I sound like John Lennon "imagine all the people... etc" , very naive and idealistic, but however! Rated, super rated!
