I wear his ring
I can hardly bear to look
They called me in
Said, "Come for his effects."
Those ones who withdrew it
From cold flesh.
Strange word for a ring, an effect.
His watch was one too
And I also wear that
They both taunt me
That watch, that ring.
I played with the fingers
Around that ring
When I was small enough to fit
In his lap
So many decades past
When I was always going
To have a daddy
It taunts me
It tells me he's gone
It offends me.
The offending effect,
Though I know it's my fault.
I chose to wear it
I must look at it
And hear its awful message...
That you don't always
Have a Daddy.
