40; army brat; bisexual... still living with my ex partner (uhm, it's complicated?); perpetually confused, which makes me look like i'm doing a ditzy act, but actually it's not put on; middle class in cash if not culture (freaking finally); INFP/INFJ; SSRI, lithium, nicotine lozenge and caffeine dependent. Driven to laziness, odd fits of needing to 'fix' things, subthreshold hypomanic moments of productiveness (rarely) and random weirdness (often). --------------------------- If you have regular suicidal thoughts, please try lithium. It's worth a shot and has worked wonders for me.

They arrested nurses for offering first aid @ Occupy Chicago

Rate: 26 Flag

They were not there as protestors (well, not solely), or tourists, they were there in their professional capacity as nurses offering first aid to a crowd of people.

and you arrested them Rahm (let's go all the way to the top, where the blame actually does belong and not to the poor damn cops who are just trying to feed their families)
how the hell does that make any sense at all? Even in war they let medics through (most of the time)

usually nurses and cops are allies, close allies. Nurses see the same shit and play by the same rules. *eh, throws hands up in the air* wtf guys?!

Police get their orders from somewhere and under some plan...That's where the lawyers need to turn their attention and bring those reptiles who animate the police to the light. The cops are just trying to keep their woefully underpaid very risky jobs. (Bad apples aside for a sec.) Rahm?
yeah, I know, but still, they are our brothers, you'd think they'd have stood up for us
Rahm
and sisters (holy crap, I'm gonna get some shit for that one)
Thank you, Julie. People are idiots if they don't understand that cops are part of the 99%, and the ones *I* know are of the same mind as the protestors. ~r
Joan I have no idea why it bugs me that they didn't refuse to arrest the nurses. I know they couldn't. I know that, and still :( it rankles.
:/ why the 99% stay on the bottom...cause we are really just 99 separate buckets of 1%. Each of us moving towards our own goals wondering why the heck the rest of us aren't following behind, when it's all so "obvious".
Rahm issued orders. Why? Why Rahm indeed. Love to both Julie and Joanie on this.
Ironically, this kind of behavior tells me we're going to win. r.
Rahm, like Bloomberg, is in bed with Banksters and Financiers.
Rahm has been, from the get-go, horribly nasty toward working people and organized labor. He is on the record, in a recording, for having said that "The UAW can Go fuck themselves."

What a great guy. He's a scumbag.
:( You can't arrest nurses, you'll make Jesus cry!! Cops, did you read that? JESUS WILL CRY!! :(

:)

Lorraine, no idea, but nothing happens in Chicago w/o going through the mayor's office first. If he disagreed, he could have met with them yesterday in public and took away the charges- he didn't.

Jon, I hope you are right. It certainly has me all riled up.

RW, well I know for sure he doesn't want his kids educated alongside the rest of the Chicagoland's urchins who can't afford private school.
:p~~ Tinkertot. Would you stand aside as your wife or sister got arrested. I think not. Would you do the arresting yourself? Well, maybe if there were handcuffs involved and it was your wife.
I didn't know that about Rahm, either. Wow. What a turd-meister.
WOW that's awful- I have to say one thing- I LOVE your slogan "Grammar atheist mispelling, mispronouncing and mixing metaphors with gleeful abandon!" LOL I love your term "grammar atheist" I am a grammar atheist too!!

*(#)$ union-busting Rahm. The longer he's in office, the less I trust anything he says or does. Whether the order to arrest the nurses came directly from him or from McCarthy (another piece of work), it was just wrong.
Thanks Hayley

Bikes (sadly my first thought was *shhh* don't get your husband in trouble...oh yeah, got to love that brat upbringing) tell me more about McCarthy if you can w/o damaging your own. Or at least point me to links.
Rahm's just another political hack. You'd think his buddy in the White House coulda called and given him a little friendly advice.
To clarify: We're not on a first-name basis, but "Emanuel" sounds too ecclesiastic for this context.
Mmmmmffffppppphhhhh.

The Chicago "Machine" has a long, inglorious history of brutality and abuse and Rahm certainly seems to have joined in it, but I'm not read to hold the Chicago PD faultless either. They also have a clear history of heavy handedness and use of excessive force.

I agree that the average blue shirt cop might not be that way, but when you put several of them together that "Firm Blue Line" shit raises its ugly head and they invariably do stupid shit like arrest nurses and peaceful protesters.

I DO also disagree that "they were just doing their job". Law enforcement CHOOSES to disregard violations of a vast variety of silly laws and ordinances on a daily basis. They do this in the interest of public welfare, safety and just plain common sense. To do otherwise makes them just as culpable as the Nazi soldier "who was just following orders" as her turned on the gas at Auschwitz.

My beliefs are further borne out by the actions of the Albany PD who refused to act like the Chicago PD did.

So I guess what I'm saying is that there is PLENTY of blame to go around and I'm not willing to give any of there bastards a free pass when it comes to denying civil and constitutional rights.
Can you give a history (of sorts) about what happened? Thanks.
Chicken Maaan, you always make me giggle

Amy, I am now actually waffling on the intentions of these nurses after reading more. They were there in an activist role over a nursing role and that makes a difference to me. Not saying that they are wrong- go sisters! but if that is the stance you are taking, then if you get arrested, you get arrested.

Barbara, just google it, that's what I did. If I thought I could offer an inside spin, I would, but the news feed is where I got all my info.
Julie, I wish they *had* refused to arrest the nurses. I read your piece wrong the first time. Dammit, I thought they didn't.
The charges... practicing medicine without a license? Crazy (evil) stuff
Oh I wish Joan. Both respected professions of the working class to make a stand together. That would have been ideal.

Trig, trespassing I think :) they gotta write something in that box.
Okay Julie, just cuz I'm thinking your blood pressure might be too low... Check out Rahm's campaign contributors. See a few familiar names? Wonder why he might be so willing to have OWS protesters arrested???

wtf says it all.. Keep writing it, my friend..

Amy, I dunno if it's the lack of sleep or just that is what I expect out of politicians but all I did was think "yeah".
Isn't that sad? I expect our leaders to be utterly owned. (maybe that is part of the Brat upbringing as well)

At the risk of getting myself into trouble. My work recently started going with a different transportation contractor because the state (Medicaid) demanded it. We dropped business overnight with a company who served us well to use one that the state had 'dealings' with. Now I really really want socialized medicine- all the way- no doubts, but our state is so corrupt that I wonder wtf I am getting myself into. I sound like a dog chasing my own tail, don't I?
Rahm. Hmm. He has friends in high places.
Maybe it bugs you because the nurses we know (and you are a nurse, yes?) are kind people who want to soothe heal and help other humans, not grub a bunch of money out of their pockets. It's like arresting kittens.
Our beloved mayor has gotten sideways with the Occupy Atlanta campers, too. Since they can't "control" the behavior of all the protesters, citizens are complaining about the noise and the cost of the occupation to the city. I'm sure it's a tough call for officials. Also, as you noted in your later comment, those nurses seemed to have an agenda, based on two first-hand reports I read this morning.

Rahm "made" his millions in a few short years "working" for the finance folks. Make no mistake who he's sleeping with. My uninformed guess is that the cops were given the order to sweep the area and arrest everyone. Nonetheless, I would hope that the cops on the scene would at least call their superiors before nurses who, presumably, were at their first-aid tent. Further nonetheless, there's no excuse for arresting the nurses.
It's so sad. The cops are part of the 99%, but they are like attack dogs for the super-rich now. I suppose they do whatever they are told to maintain their jobs. R.
"why the 99% stay on the bottom...cause we are really just 99 separate buckets of 1%. "

I think you nailed it.
The Establishment just doesn't get it. The whole problem is that they aren't listening to Us the People and are listening to "other people" (Corporations are people, my friend...) instead. This type of action, along with this morning's dark hours 'eviction' of the Occupy Oakland Action by the police in the Bay Area will only create a greater outcry by the People and when they can no longer be ignored, or dispersed in the wee hours of the morning when the rest of the world isn't watching, they'll have to sing another tune.

If they don't start listening soon, there will be other sounds from the people that they won't be able to ignore. I hope that it doesn't come to that. We need change and no matter how long it takes, or how much it costs, it's cheaper to do it now and non-violently than any other alternative available -- at least as far as history being my guide is concerned.

You are one of the People. You don't have to do this. Join us.
Depressing.

Chicago cops are not known for subtlety. They can be good guys.

I think they were confused.
The cops are going to start wondering whether they should support the crooks or the people. R and hugs!
I enjoyed your comment about the 99% just being 99 buckets of 1% each. That is very graphic and unfortunately it is very true... and is probably the reason that the OWS will eventually fade. The original 1% has equal numbers plus the added advantage of money and influence.
I missed this in the news. I'll go news surf soon and be even more livid over it than I am now. What's next, will Homeland security STOP all air travel to prevent people from "occupying" their seats?!
