I am not a political analyst like some here at OS are. (i.e. ronp01) In spite of the limited knowledge I have concerning the political arena and worldly news, I feel outrage when I hear what's being spread as "news" from the far right and especially from FOX News. The lies spread and spoken as truth never ceases to amaze me. The trash talk and downright dangerous ideas propagated from the Republican side sickens me.
I was so proud of my husband, who is normally a quiet passive kind of guy, defend Obama and defy the filth that came from the mouth of one of the choir members in his church. This choir member, a nurse, mentioned that one of her eighty year old patients from Germany commented on how what he is hearing in America reminded him of Hitler. She also mentioned how Obama is referred to as the "Messiah." My husband, who never wants to offend anyone, set her straight. He, in so many words, told her that no one refers to Obama as the "Messiah" except for his detractors. The Democrats certainly don't call Obama that. The other point he made concerned a documentary he had tried to watch not that long ago. (It had been made by Alfred Hitchcock, but never got released because of its shock value. It can be found on the internet at
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/camp/view/
He told this nurse/choir member that because it was so horrifying, he could not continue watching it. He admonished her that there is NO LEADER in America, Democrat or Republican, that even comes close to being a Hitler. Not only that, connecting Obama to Hitler, lessens and cheapens the evil and hell Hitler caused while he was on earth. This last idea he actually mentioned to me and not to her. She quickly changed the subject hoping to avoid more conversation with my husband on that topic.
I am hoping she learned a lesson and received some information that will enlighten her to open her mind and perhaps question some of the junk she hears from fellow right wing Republicans. I also realize that it is possible that she simply changed her mind about my husband instead of Obama and will now regard him with condemning judgement because of his support of Obama. It's a risk my husband took knowing that he might lose a "friend" from this church choir. Who needs friends such as these?

I am fine with honest disagreement about policy and positions and actions. There are some who believe that Obama should have just let GM go the way of the dinosaurs, just like there are those who think Bush should have let Citi go poof. And there, what we have is an honest disagreement about policy.
But to say that Obama is like Hitler is just ridiculous and ignorant.
In short, contemporary friendship is a kind of reverse selfishness. One of the root causes of extremism is the "singularity" of the people who share a certain belief or perspective. They have no "friends" who hold differing views, much less opposing views. Your husband didn't risked losing a "friend" he stood up for the notion that a "friend" doesn't have to agree with your point of view but respects your right to maintain and express your point of view whatever that may be....
Solidly written post...
You don't need friends like this.
It is sad that people feel this way in 2009, even sadder that these behaviors are exhibited in churches, where God is supposed to be present.

I watched the first video, a few moments at least before I collapsed in tears. I cannot believe with all of the witness statements, pictures, video, Nazi confessions, and the scrupulous recordkeeping of the Nazi, despite all of this overwhelming evidence, we still have people who deny that the holocaust occurred.
I was pained beyond belief when I heard about the shooting at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC., and incredulous that anyone could step into that place and still keep hatred in their mind.
I'm sorry my post has turned into a rant, and I'm a puddle of tears as I type this , but to me a budget deficit is not the same as the murder of 11 million human beings.
