I Want To Be Myself

Rate: 9 Flag
One of the advantages of being middle age is the freedom to be myself without as much concern or fear of what others are thinking. For the most part, I like who I am and appreciate the gifts I posses as a unique, one of a kind, human being.  There is no other exactly like me, and yet, I am so similar to most of the human race. Although I can produce a list of items I would change if I could, I usually enjoy being me.

I've always been a people pleaser simply because I like bringing joy to others. I also like the feelings I experience when I please others....feelings of joy, happiness, satisfaction, and an over all feeling of contentment. Being the oldest of four makes me a people pleaser simply by birth order. Where I'm changing ever so slightly, is the extent of pleasing others. I'm no longer willing to please just for your approval alone. If pleasing you requires me to be something that which I am not, I may hesitate a bit instead of plunging head first into an action that requires too much from me.

I love people and you are no exception. I desire your happiness along with my own happiness, but I am no longer willing to shrink around you or to play small so that you may feel larger, more important, or less envious. I will not degrade, insult, or criticize you, but in return I want to unabashedly  be myself without the concern that you will not like me or that you will feel intimidated.

There is enough room for both of us on this stage called, "life." There is no reason to be jealous or envious of me just because I may possess  gifts or abilities that you don't have because I guarantee that you are better than I in other areas. No two were created equal and yet your existence on this earth is not one iota less important than my existence or anyone else's.

I just want to be myself....that's all.

I've missed writing, but haven't been inspired to write anything lately. I started this post awhile back and so decided to complete it hoping that someone will be able to relate to it and to me.

William Faulkner -

Really the writer doesn't want more success ... She/he knows she/he has a short san of life,
the day will come and
we pass through the wall of oblivion, and he/she wants to leave a scratch n the wall . . . that somebody a hundred, or a thousand years from now will later see.
No worry.

Stathi Stathi, thank you for reading "me" and understanding.
Art, any time you post a comment, you leave a "gift" of yourself. It's always an honor to hear from you. You are one of those people on Open Salon who makes me feel appreciated, loved, and understood for who I am. I wish I could meet you. Lots of love to you.....and thank you.
How wise and insightful, and very well put. I genuinely like giving people joy, it doesn't translate into letting them trash me because that gives them joy. I just want to be myself too.

You have been missed, it's good to see a post by you.
This is great growth factor accompanying the aging process. Some older folks lose out by continuing to try to be a clone.

Fine post of depth and truth.
Thank you, Scylla.
l'Heure Bleue, thank you for noticing that I've been away. I really appreciate that.
Patrick Frank, you're right on about those who lose out. It's so much more fulfilling simply being yourself.
This definitely resonates with me. You have a good way of articulating it. I have more respect in my life since I adopted that policy.
How lovely to know that you are good enough just as you are. That is not the gift of years, it is the gift of maturity. Wisdom? I don't know, I just know Art James has it.
Being yourself rules..

Sing it, sister. Glad to see you here!
I am a people pleaser too and like you, I enjoy doing things that brings joy to others. People pleasers tend to forget that they must bring joy to themselves as well and occasionally say no to others. May we both find that balance and allow ourselves to just be.
