Breeders' Cup Day II

Rate: 0 Flag

OK, not a great day on Friday.  I had the first (Non-Breeders' Cup) race and the third (Breeders' Cup I) at Santa Anita yesterday at pretty good prices, so the day wasn't a disaster, but still not a winner.  I lost $20 when it was all said and done.  Day two I am betting to win and I am taking:

Pounced in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.  I think this horse looks pretty good for Frankie Dettori.

California Flag gets the nod in the Turf Sprint.  Really, all things being equal, why not take the horse that owns the course and distance record?  Especially when it is such an unorhodox course as the downhill turf at Santa Anita.

Gayego is my mild upset pick in the Sprint.  Zensational is a deserving favorite and Dancing in Silks deserves to be better than the 12-1 the morning line maker has given him, but Gayego just seems too tough from off the pace.  If Zensational is unable to wire the field, look for Garrett Gomez to pick up the pieces.

Lookin' At Lucky is lookin' like the winner 0f the Juvenile.  He runs for Bob Baffert, and given my history with that trainer you might want to go against him (and, for that matter, take Zensational above).  But I think this horse has done nothing wrong so far and he has home court advantage.  Radiohead and Aikenite are the upset specials.

Goldikova is going to be the prohibitive favorite in the Breeders' Cup Mile.  So if the odds are unplayable I may take a shot with either Ferneley, Court Vision, or even Courageous Cat.

Midshipman is likewise my longshot pick over Irish raider Mastercraftsman in the Dirt Mile.  Neko Bay would be the super sneaky winner if he proves good enough for the outstanding connections of Mr & Mrs. Jerry Moss, John Sherriffs and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.

I really like Presious Passion to steal the Breeders' Cup Turf from defending champ Conduit.  He'll just take the lead, the Euros will hang back and won't know what hit them.  Dar Re Mi is also a possiblity.

Zenyatta.  It is impossible for me to separate sentiment from handicapping with her.  I like her for the Classic.  She's good enough, big enough, strong enough and has incredible acceleration.  Rip Van Winkle comes from Europe and maybe is good enough.  Summer Bird has distance pedigree and seems to improve every time he steps on the track.  Alex Solis and Bob Baffert could upset with Richard's Kid.  But Zenyatta gets it; my money says she stays undefeated and makes a good case for Horse of the Year honors.
