Baking Doggie Style - With Gratuitous Labretards

Rate: 10 Flag

Chez Surly the dogs eat better than the humans on most days.  You can ask my husband.  I've taken to baking homemade treats for the beasties.  At first it was a one off "You've been such good beasties" kind of treat, but now they turn their noses up at the store bought stuff.

Labretard Peanut Butter Carob Chip Cookies

1 cup organic natural peanut butter
1 cup skim milk
2 cups organic whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 cup carob chips

Peanut Butter

ewwwwwwwwwwww.... carob chips.  Can't stand the stuff, but the beasties don't know it's vegan!

Step 1.  Combine peanut butter and skim milk in a bowl.  Yes, in my house we use vintage Pyrex mixing bowls - in varying shades of green and yellow, including a lovely 4 quart avacado green bowl.

Step 2. Combine flour and baking powder.

Step 3. Combine wet and dry ingredients throughly.  Add in carob chips.

Step 4. Preheat oven to 375. Form balls from about 1 tablespoon of the dough, and place on cookie sheet.  In this house, we're professionals, we use an ice cream scoop to make sure our cookies are nice and round.

Step 5. Bake for 20 minutes.

Step 6. Cool. Serve to waiting beasties.

(As an aside - my real range, which is a 1940 O'Keefe and Merrit Artistocrat Range like this one, lives in our garage awaiting us finding a home with a kitchen big enough to house it.)

Seems today is Two-Fer-Tuesday!
Be glad you don't have a Great Dane. Or even a Mediocre Dane. Do you mix in some Pepto-Bismol with that, just in case?

R.
I would love to have a Dane... great or mediocre! I like my dogs big and dumb. I serve Pepcid after dinner mints on some days.
Yowza - that range! I crave that. Is that a two-oven, or are there more? I'm saving this recipe, too.
Wonderful and the post-comma turkeys are happy!
Mumble - two ovens, two broilers, and a warming oven - plus 6 burners, the set can be replaced by a griddle, and there's pot storage. My grandmother bought it in 1940... and I inherited it when she passed.
Love your beasties and covet the stove!
Thanks to you I am no longer ashamed to admit that I cook for my pair of Labretards too! Mine are Fred and Ava and they are black like yours. Their regular dog food is this gourmet canadian stuff that smells good enough for me to eat in a pinch but am thinking for a treat they might just get some fresh burger meat and rice tonight.

Jack and Sally would likely enjoy a get together with Fred and Ava, a little swim first then a nap followed by some of your cookies, and perhaps some Bridge playing?

Do you own a furminator? I think they are a must have for every Labretard household (disclaimer: I accept not solicit no renumeration from the furminator people, this was an unsolicited Labretard recommendation).

You will have the kitchen for that range, you will!
My Lab, Joe, is sending you his address in a private e-mail so you can mail him a box of these cookies. He does however take exception to the name of your doggy treat, and instead suggests that you call them "crunch, munch, slobber, drool, wag, burp, ahh, phhtt doggy delights".
Ablonde - Labretards seems to require spoiling. Yes, I have a furminator, although it doesn't get as much fur off of them as they seem to be able to get off by rubbing on my bed. It does, however, get dogloads of fur off of my camera shy Golden Retriever/Shepard mix Bruno.

Cave - Joe's exception is noted.
Does the ASPCA know you're feeding vegan food to your pets?
nana - I'm not opposed to feeding them vegans straight off the grill, but I think they would find them a bit tough and get them stuck in their teeth.
It all starts with "I'm just going to make them treats". My mother ended up cooking 3 meals a day for her brood, who have all since passed after long lives.
Love your range in the garage! Hope you find a house for it, or maybe hook it up in the garage?
Hey! Only one foodie post per Tuesday, Missy. Of course, these look so good you are forgiven. ;-)
Loved this. Nice range too. I would substitute gf flour because the L&P are sensitive to wheat (good old Bostons), but that looks great.

L&P get green after dinner mints in the quarter size version every night before bed.

Jack and Sally are mighty cute. I love Danes too. Had one as a kid. Huge and dumb. And cute.
Luluandphoebe - Jack and Sally think they are mighty cute as well... they are less cute at 7:00AM when they are shouting loudly about going outside to play!

To have to live gluten free is a travesty...
