Captain America Goes Tea Baggin'

Rate: 32 Flag

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a Tea Bagger!

Since 1941 Captain America has been keeping America safe from all manner of foes, both real and imagined by the clever folks at Marvel.  He fought the Nazis! He kept us safe from the commies during the great "Red Scare." And most recently, he's been taking on the tea baggers, and getting his ass kicked for his efforts.  It would seem that tea is Captain America's kryptonite.

In his blog post on Yahoo! News this morning Brett Michael Dykes details the great hero's battle against those who would tea bag. They do know we're all snickering when we call them "tea baggers" don't they? An excerpt from his post is quoted below:

Issue 602 of the comic features Captain America investigating a right-wing anti-government militia group called "the Watchdogs". Hoping to infiltrate the group, Captain America and his African-American sidekick The Falcon observe an anti-tax protest from a rooftop. The protestors depicted are all white and carry signs adorned with slogans almost identical to those seen today in Tea Party rallies like "tea bag libs before they tea bag you" and "stop the socialists."
The Falcon mentions that the gathering appears to be "some kind of anti-tax protest" and notes that "this whole 'hate the government' vibe isn't limited to the Watchdogs." He then tells Captain America that he doesn't think their plan will work because "I don't exactly see a black man from Harlem fitting in with a bunch of angry white folks." Captain America then explains that his plan entails sending The Falcon in among the group posing as an IRS agent under the thinking that a black government official will most certainly spark their anger.
The clear implicit attack on the Tea Party Movement was first noticed by Publius' Forum's Warner Todd Huston. When a minor uproar ensued, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada spoke to Comic Book Resources and defended the issue while apologizing for the panel that seemed to tie real-life Tea Party protesters to the fictional group depicted in the book.
Quesada then went on to say that Marvel would "apologize for and own up to" a series of "stupid mistakes" that led to them "accidentally identifying" one of the members of the protest group "as being a part of the Tea Party instead of a generic protest group." He explained that they were on deadline to get the issue to the printer for publication, and in the course of sending it off it was noticed that the signs in the scene contained no words or phrases. He said the editor then asked the letterer to "fudge in some quick signs" and that in the "rush to get the book out of the door," the letterer "looked on the net and started pulling slogans" from signs captured in photographs at Tea Party protests in order to make them appear "believable."

Seriously people.  If you're gonna form organizations like the Tea Party Nation and promote an aggressive agenda, you're gonna have to expect that you're gonna be talked about in the main stream press, the blogosphere, and yes, even in the funny pages.

When these conservative groups post racist photos of our president, cast aspersions on his heritage, religion, and place of birth we're supposed to let them pass out flyers at the super market, but Captain America can't kick their asses around the Marvel universe?  Pshaw.

I dunno about you lot... but this just pissed me off and cracked me up at the same time.
I haven't read the post yet, but I was drawn by the title, which suggests some nice super-hero based homoerotica. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
They don't know we're snickering about the term tea bagging, because they don't know any gay men. Or think they don't ;-)
I've read the post now, and I can't believe those cowards at Marvel are denying they were talking about the Teabaggers. Those wussies!
Clearly they are no match for their own super heroes.

Here's the puzzle for the day. Is it tea baggin' or teabaggin' Dave and I were debating this as I was writing.
It's almost surreal that this is an actual news item. You said it exactly, they can say, do and hold up whatever racial and radical signs they want, but how dare someone put it in print! If they believe what they are saying - make that screaming, shouldn't they be stoked they are in a freaking comic book?
i'm voting for teabaggin'. a teabag (those things they staple to their straw hats in the pics) is one word.

i saw this last night on MSNBC. there's no explaining it away. asshats.
i saw this last night - c to the razy. if only - IF ONLY - the teabaggers were proper John Waters teabaggers...xx A

I look spiffy in my uniform there, don't I!? I had to use the shield to hide my, uh, excitement of Surly taking my pic.
Harry! You and I both know that your only super power is peeping.
In the homeless community that power is quite revered, thank you very much!
that is politics, to a point, although I wish people would draw some boundaries, but they never really have.
I'm glad it came out before anyone got a chance to change it. Lets call a duck a duck and a treasonous radical a treasonous radical. It's about time some form of the media grew a sack.
They can dish it out, but they don't like looking in a mirror while they do it...R
Ah, the state of freedom in the land of the free, and the courage of the citizens of the home of the brave. It seems that both "sides" of this argument appear to fear truth.
Why is it that when the left protests they receive praise and recogntition, but when the right protests they are labeled as anti-American? Nobody looks back at the Civil Rights protests as a negative or anti-American effort. The Tea Party protests should not be looked upon this way either.
I think Captain America and his "African American side-kick" are my new heros...after you, of course, surly.
@mamoore - I'm glad to see you have your priorities straight!
The only thing that pissed me off was the instant roll over and play dead. Good thing Marvel didn't publish the Grapes of Wrath.
Oh no! The pimply faced, fat geeks of America will be brainwashed!

Great article!
I don't know enough gay men to know what one form of "teabagging" means. However, I do know what I'd do--using pomegranate juice, of course--with those old tampons I might still have laying around. Oh, the horror!
First it was BJ's, then Hummer, now Tea Bag. We're running out of metaphors. Eventually, someone's just going to name something fellatio.
Captain America taken down by a bunch of teabaggers? C'mon.
Hey guys. I found the full size comic, in case anyone wants it. Link is here. Click once to enlarge it to read-able size.

I have no idea why Joe would defend or apologize. How scary is that? These 'tea baggers' have people so intimidated that the hand over their right to free speech.

On the Tea Party Nation website it states: We believe in Limited Government, Free Speech, the 2nd Amendment, our Military, Secure Borders and our Country!

Free speech? Unless you're saying something negative about their organization.

This is stranger than a fictional comic book to be sure. xox
Apologizin' to the teabaggers for their role in the comic book, Captain America? Wuss. As for the teabaggers themselves who can't stand being in a comic book? Super dooper, king sized wussified wimpy assed gutless teabugger. Note that I said, BUGGER not BAGGER. Check the dictionary. There's a tea bug that sucks juices out of the tea leaves. Think about it.
Lol, it's a goddamned storyline, and possibly a good one.

Spoilers... not that anyone actually cares.

The new Captain America is Bucky Barnes, he was Steve Rogers'(the original Captain America) sidekick in WWII. He went missing and became an assassin for the USSR called the Winter Soldier. It should be no surprise about his feelings towards the tea party

I believe the old Captain America (Steve Rogers) is leading The Watchdogs. He is still kicking fascist ass and taking names.

Also, if we want to remember comic books, there was an issue of The Punisher where he infiltrated the oval office and told Bush not to make him show up again or he was a dead man. I'd like to see that fly if something like that happened with Obama on the end of the threats.

America won't be unfucked until we realize that both parties couldn't care about us at all.

And apologizing was the right thing to do. If you offend someone, you apologize, there's nothing wrong about that at all. Like I said, there's a double standard here under a veil of equality.

When you try to take a stance on issues without realizing that both parties don't have your best interests in mind, you look dumb.

DISCLAIMER: Before everyone get's LOLMAD at me, I'll disclose the fact that I think Sarah Palin, her followers, Fox News, MSNBC, Bill O'Reilly, and Glenn Beck are lumbering piles of radiating fucktardedness. Don't flame/hate me, I'm a moderate.
"When these conservative groups post racist photos of our president, cast aspersions on his heritage, religion, and place of birth we're supposed to let them pass out flyers at the super market, but Captain America can't kick their asses around the Marvel universe? Pshaw."
what the teabaggers actually stand for is not clear, but there are some uncontroversial stands that are mainstream
(a) govt sucks up too much of our money with little return
(b) dems & republicans both tend to be tools of the corporatocracy
(c) isolationism. at least, non interventionism
but, the party is still sorting itself out.
and before you dis the teabaggers or turning them into a bogeyman or strawman, look into the origination of either the democratic or republican parties. the roots are not much different as far as perceived radicalism at the time....
Captain America is my hero!
I'm not really sure why the Tbggrs are so upset - isn't this the truth?

I'm gonna be calling them t-buggers
Troll Face, I love your fan fiction! However, I beg to differ with your conclusion that both parties do not have our interests at heart and therefore anyone who choose the Dems over the GOP looks stupid.

I think it is pretty obvious to most clear thinking people that America is in a decline. But now is not the time to worry about "looking stupid" when a person chooses sides, picks a candidate, volunteers, donates, and votes. The trick is to replace the a**holes with better people.

You can stand on the sidelines and snicker and curse at those who look stupid if it makes you feel better.

"this just pissed me off and cracked me up at the same time." Kind of like the Tea Baggers themselves. Did you happen to hear the Fox News commentator who, referring to candidate Obama and Michelle's fist bump, said they were "fisting"? Since I don't watch Fox News (and I'm guessing you don't, either), I'd have missed it if it weren't for Joel McHale and "The Soup." I laughed until I cried.
>>Didn't read what I said

Picking sides, donating, and volunteering for people that don't know you, never will, and have evidenced themselves as tools of corporations and private interests so you can think you made a difference is the problem. Here's a tip: they're all assholes.

"You can stand on the sidelines and snicker and curse at those who look stupid if it makes you feel better."

There's nobody not worth snickering at nowadays.
If walks like a, talks like a, looks like a----it is a Tea Bagger!
I'm with Dustin. Whether liberals like it not, the Tea Party is a grassroots insurgency ddetermined to purge our beloved country from the foul, collectivist, and corrupt policies and practices of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and other henchmen.

The Tea Party will succeed, because down deep in the American heart is a respect for free enterprise, individual responsibility, and private property.

In a way, the Tea Party should be grateful for Obama and his gang. If Obama were more qualified for his office, and his advisors less patently ideologically unwholesome, it might be more difficult to take them down. But the way they're currently operating, we should be rid of them in record time.
Please forgive the extra "d" in "determined."
If the Tea Baggers can produce a handful of black followers (who, according to the Daily Show, is not black but actually a distant cousin of the Soup Muppet from Sesame Street), then and only then should Marvel produce an apology.

And to the TB I say: "Good luck with that."
Rated for incorporation of politics and comics. My two favorite things.
lol failpost. Lets try that one again. I really need to learn to edit before posting. I just get too excited when I read your stuff:

If the Tea Baggers can produce a handful of black followers OTHER THAN MICHAEL STEELE (who, according to the Daily Show, is not black but actually a distant cousin of the Soup Muppet from Sesame Street), then and only then should Marvel produce an apology.

And to the TB I say: "Good luck with that."

Why did Quesada apologize? The tea baggers should be apologizing to us for their actions. Quesada's apology is likened to Blacks having to apologize to the KKK for being black!!! My country is really up-side-down. The real Captain America would have kicked some tea bagger butt.
They don't know the political makeup of who muys Marvel or goes to their movies. It was actually a smart business decision. and because a handful of people at Teabags do seem to be saying inappropriate things in terms of race does not invalidate the opinions of anyone who woul like lower taxes and less spending, with 50 trillion in Medcaid Medicare debt. In fairness, they should have have tea parties the past 9 years. Our congress and our fiat fractional reserve monetary system is bankrupting us and has been for a long time. People have every right to protest the point.
OF COURSE Captain America would side with deliberative democracy and getting along and playing fair. So of course the Tea Braggers would be suspect, since they are none of the above.

EXCELLENT, IAmSurly. There is hope for us yet. Excelsior!
It seems natural that teabaggers are comic book characters. They certainly are comical when the Daily Show interviews them
Dear Dustin,

If you can't tell the difference between a real civil rights movement and a astro-turf grass roots movement manufactured by Dick Armey and Fox News you deserve to get teabagged.
If you think the president is a cross between Hitler and Stalin you deserve to be teabagged.
If you want a president who couldn't even finish her job as governor and has to read answers to softball questions off her hand you deserve to be teabagged.
If you think Rush Limbaugh is an intellectual you deserve to be teabagged.
By the way, use your spell checker before making that sign for the next rally.
If you don't know what teabagging is, google it.
to become a citizen, don't you have to swear that you do not support the overthrow of the US government? i guess it's different if you weren't born a goddam furriner.
I heard that Wonder Woman is pissed at Palin and wants her tiara back, in the funnies...
ah, yes, the, "we don't feel the slogans we carry around portray us in a fair light," argument

but then these people don't understand big words like "hypocrisy"
I would challenge Marvel to refuse to apologize

imagine how well a bunch of tea baggers burning capt America in effigy would go over with the media

who's unamerican now?
