Harper Valley PTA meets Footloose - Homos in Tuxes Forbidden

Rate: 57 Flag

I betcha you would be surprised to discover I wasn't the Prom Queen in high school. Yeah, I know.  Shock, huh? It happens.  Not all high school dreams come true.  In my case I suspect it was because I didn't actually attend the prom.  In the case of the prom queen hopefuls of Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Mississippi it is because the school district would rather cancel the prom than allow Constance McMillen, a lesbian student, to wear a tuxedo and  to bring her girlfriend as her date. (Pause for a rousing chorus of WTF?)

USA Today reports that the homophobic geniuses running the local school board have stated:

"Due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events, the Itawamba County School District has decided to not host a prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School this year."

Really? Rather than let one lesbian bring a date to a school function they are going to punish the entire student body? Gah.  This is the stuff that just spikes my "Grow The Fuck Up" meter. And y'all thought the folks at the Harper Valley PTA were uptight.

As if the social politics of high school aren't already hellish for both gay and straight students, this move will only make senior year even more of a nightmare for McMillen.

"Oh, my God. That's really messed up because the message they are sending is that if they have to let gay people go to prom that they are not going to have one," she said. "A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this."

School officials told McMillen last month that she could not bring her sophomore girlfriend to the prom nor could she wear a tuxedo. The school then circulated a memo that prohibited same-sex dates.  McMillen challenged this ruling and the ACLU, bless their liberal hearts, issued a sternly worded missive demanding that they change their policy, and gave them until Wednesday to make a decision.  Well, they did. And it was a colossally stupid one to boot.

In another portion of the foolish and narrowminded statement the board states:

"It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this causes anyone."

One can only hope that the town of Fulton has an industrious Ren McCormack, an abandoned mill, and a copy of the soundtrack to Footloose.

To read the whole story, and to be as horrified as I am, visit USA Today.

Donchta just have to love those ole rednecks? Yeah let's hear it for the south!

The prom is an educational process? What does that even mean?

Baffling. And that gal is right, her life is going to be even more hellish than I imagine it already is because of this.

Maybe she can put on those red cowboy boots as a beacon for Ren.
Maybe Kenny Loggins will play at their private prom!
We aren't going to make it, are we?
There's a reason that Mississippi is 50th of 50 in education. Just turn this into a major brou haha for the entire nation. This is such a non issue that it deserves to be flayed in public. I mean really what harm are they doing by allowing her to come in a tux? Will the sight of a person with breasts in male garb destroy the entire school? Is it better to repress the sexuality of these two kids than to admit that some people have sexual relationship and romantic ones with others of the same sex? Get a freakin' grip here Mississippi. There are millions of homosexual people in the big ol' world and being stupid won't make them all go away.
Good post.. thanks for the heads up and rated :-)
I wonder if they would cancel sporting events if the girl and her date showed up in tuxes? Ooo, I'm such an evil radical.
Oh man, what a buncha douches on the school board. I mean really ... this may be the dumbest ass thing I'll see all day.
Yeah, a memo will take care of all that dating too! Insanity rules the day once again. Is this world moving backwards or does it just seem that way?
...but if i call them backward redneck idiots they will feel all violated and insulted.

*sigh*
I will not allow myself to fully vent the many ways in which this is stupid and wrong, in my vested opinion. Moral of the story: don't ask permission, just do it. Fuckers.
Let's see if the school feels the same way and attempts to cancel the home coming dance if this couple were to ask to do the same thing. I'll bet boatloads of money that those good old soutern boys wouldn't dare let anyone touch their precious football traditions
As someone non-gendered, I find this especially offensive. I'm not sure why that should be. It just is. From the songs of Footloose- "I need a hero. I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night"
Surly, you'll be happy to hear that Fark.com has got this prominently featured on the "Not News" tab. Here's their summary (their link goes to the YahooNews story):

"A Mississippi high school takes the occasion of a lesbian student wanting to attend prom with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo as a chance to teach everyone a lesson on tolerance. Nah, just kidding, they cancelled the whole damn thing."
I'm currently reading Jackie Robinson's autobiography in advance of coming baseball season, and this incident reminds me of when Jackie was in the minor leagues and southern teams would cancel games when Jackie's team came to town rather than play on the same field as a black man.

I bring this up because nowadays no one even thinks twice about black men playing baseball. Or Latinos. Or Asians. Things change, and if we fight hard enough, they change for the better.
I wonder if the big sign outside the school board building reads, "LET'S SEE WHAT ELSE WE CAN DO TO FUCK THINGS UP"

now you've gone and fucked up my whole day - thanks.

;)
This would be the same region that is pushing for new textbooks that give more credence to both Christianity and Republican/conservative principles. To my friends from Texas: leave the state; then we'll encourage them to secede.
Starting the countdown until Sarah Palin uses this to bash the ACLU.

In 5... 4... 3... 2...
Just when you think they can't make it any worse....
As if it wasn't bad enough that Mississippi has the worst educational system in the country....
Where is Kevin Bacon when you need him? This situation makes me sick.
Perhaps the school district will be really happy when this courageous lesbian does as so many gay teens do and kills herself?
What are they thinking?
This shit makes me blind with rage, that they are so afraid of gay that they'll prevent anyone from seeing that gay people are just like anybody else.
Or perhaps they'd like to go join the Osmonds in mourning the death of a gay son being raised in a Mormon culture.
This is why "Carrie" is such a great movie.
Who Needs Mississippi Anyway?

Is it possible to cancel an entire state? If so, I will deploy The Entire Lesbian Army, all wearing tuxedos, to demand entrance to the state.
This is why being from Mississippi makes me cringe.
Well, there's education and then there is...education. And then there is the ability to learn.
Damn, THAT is some kind of DUMBASS!
That poor girl.

Seriously, WTF??? To prevent an entire school from "learning" there are such people as gays and lesbians in their nice little world, they'll punish the ENTIRE senior class by cancelling the prom?

I knew Mississippi was ****ed up, but honestly, you wonder if they'll ever grow out of it.
The thought of two girls NOT waiting passively for men to impregnate them! Here in New Orleans, we used to have an all-gay all high-school prom put on by P-FLAG (Parents and Friends of Gays and Lesbians) or someone like that. I love that the girl took it to ACLU. Let's here it for ACLU in the DEEP DARK SOUTH--like here in Louisiana.

gads. i saw this on the news this morning and choked on my first cuppa and ciggie.

yeah, good thinking: let's take a student that is already on the fringe and make her even more 'detestable' (by their standards). maybe they are hoping she will be dragged behind a pickup truck so they won't have to face this issue again.

i hate when idiots prove that cliches are right ie Mississippi=inbred, redneck morons.

KEVIN! WE NEED YOU.....
@Boanerges1 Don't be so sure. The Texas State Board of Education is still debating social studies curricula today.
Prom as Education? No wonder Mississipi is ranked 50th in education! Last spring, I watched an amazing documentary on HBO produced by Morgan Freeman about the first integrated prom in Mississipi. First integrated prom and it's the 21st century. Sometimes I wonder if we should have let the south secede from the Union!
i know crap like this still happens all the time, but i still can't lift my jaw up from my desk. what a bunch of a-holes. great post. people need to hear this sort of thing. daily. rated!!
Is it just me, or is the notion of a lesbian couple attending a school prom a complete non-issue? And even if the other students might be "shocked," how long would this shock be likely to last? Maybe two minutes before every0ne else gets back to having a good time at the party?

Yes, it gets my G. the F. up meter going too...

Rated.
how unsurprised am I?

a bunch, you betcha!

The South has been putting on "private" proms for years (or holding two separate proms) in order not to mix the races. God forbid they should have to appear to condone homosexuality!

makes me friggin sad, too. Cause I'd like to retire to "the South".
Between these homophobes in Mississippi, the psycho anti-choicers in Oklahoma and the gay movie ban in Florida, why do we even bother with the South anymore? Not to mention the nutjobs in Tennessee who want all the brown people out of their state. Wasn't there a town in Tennessee that wanted to make English the official language? I'm sure there are some really nice people in the South who are not completely batshit with prejudice, but they need to come up North. Texas always talks about wanting to secede, I say we let them. And take OK, TN, FL and all the other bastions of hate with them. They can have Utah, too. Then the North will be one big party where women make their own decisions and gays can marry anyone and anything and you can even be Christian but you can’t be a dickhead Christian. In the New North you can be anything you want so long as you’re not a dickhead about it. God, if only.
@Asianshoebox:
"In the New North you can be anything you want so long as you’re not a dickhead about it."

Brilliantly stated ! Isn't that just the 21st century version of Jefferson's "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..."?
Would it make any difference if she wore overalls to the prom, instead of a tux?
Wow, what a way to teach tolerance and acceptance to the high school students! People's ignorance is just disgusting.
WTF Thursday indeed. And now I have Footloose stuck in my head. It's not going to be a good day.
It must be in the air...along with everything else (see Asianshoebox's list, above), a Catholic school in California has refused readmission to a young girl because the child is being raised by a woman-woman couple.

Whatever happened to "They will know we are Christians by our love" ?!?!?!?!?!?!
I just hope the teens in question are strong enough to weather this well, and can get the hell out of the south when they're old enough. That's who I really feel for in all this... vulnerable teens in bigoted homophobic communities, who have no choice but to live at home with Mom and Dad until 18.

So... teen girl lesbians in Mississippi, if you're reading this, rock on. Fight the good fight. Come north. Or west. As soon as you can.
The mind, she is boggled.
Puleeze. This is the same state where up until 2008, the prom was held twice: Once for black students and one for white students in one of the school districts. A wonderful HBO documentary, "Prom Night" tells the story._r
What Owl said. Don't ask for permission.xox
I've always felt that homosexuality was a natural form of population control - one which every anti-abortionist zealot should champion! Just think: all the benefits of human love and companionship - and no threat of additional mouths to feed! What a nice - and beneficial - alternative to heterosexual love and reproduction. I am so sad that those poor girls have to endure the idiocy and cruelty imposed by imbeciles clinging to outdated ideologies.
Make the administrators read the Promtacluar website. All of a sudden, that tuxedo won’t look so bad….
Oops that's Promtacular, not Promtacluar.
what a bunch of yahoos. i read about this and think it is just ridiculous. xxa
the trouble, once you start picking away at tradition, there is no tellin' where it might end. probly in socialism, and democracy.

don't be too judgemental. every 'progressive' i've ever heard wanted just enough progress to make himself comfortable. they draw the line well before democracy and socialism, those weird ideas.

so it's just a matter of degree. that's why health care reform isn't getting anywhere. most doin' fine, thx, and are worried about what progress for the lowers will mean for the middles.

"heaven forfend that my medicare be diluted by taking care of the poor!"

don't worry about those young ladies and gentleman in mississippi, the pta built a whole new school system a few years back, supporting a prom will be easy.
I know. This is unbelievable.
I tend not to like people who jump into a thread and use it for their political agenda, then tell tell me not to judge them. You don't give a sh*t about what happens. You can't see past your delusional fears of socialism. Then, while oh so high upon the pedestal you pat me on the head and tell me not to worry. Ugh. Creep.
Is this story crazy? Yes. Surprising? No.
R
This happened back in 1977 - I was there.
A nearby town here in Central California held a separate LGBT prom one year, and our daughter attended it to support her LGBT friends. She was raised by two mothers.
Outrageous!
My first question would be why would anyone (not just you,) live in a town as narrow and bigoted as your town?
But where does one go? They are everywhere.
We live in Florida and resent our gay tax dollars going to fund ignornance such as this. And yet we come up with the same question: where can we move where homosexuality is unequivacably accepted?
Canceling the prom is a damn good idea.

Cancel football too.

And every other damn thing that doesn't involve education.
Thank you so much for outlining the rampant hypocrisy of this situation. Let the gals dance!
Julie:

The 'educational process' that will be interfered with will be the sex education kids get out in the parking lot afterward. A girl in a tux just may ruin that, dontcha know?
"homophobic geniuses" Thanks for identifying the species, may they wind up on the endangered species list and be left unfunded.
Concise recap of this, plus blood-boil commentary. Well-done. You nail it.

They deliberately isolated this girls. Callously willing to let her be the target of their ignoramus bigotry, to make an archaic point. And put her at risk.

There is no hell, but I wish I could wish one into existence sometimes.
Not all southern schools are so iggorant. The College of William & Mary, in Williamsburg, Va., elected a transgender homecoming queen last fall. It twitted some alumni chins but all-in-all passed muster with the community without much stir.

Maybe Mississippi should look to Virginia once again for leadership. **shouts rebel yell and wanders off arm-in-arm with Tink** Ya think? (r)
YEA!!! Good decision!! That'll teach em!!

Wait, what? Damn....
When I first read this it was on Yahoo, and it wasn't that it happened that bothered me as much as the comments that were getting the most thumbs up ratings. Here is one that really bugged me, since it appears to not be from a troll but just how someone honestly felt (and got 8148 thumbs up as of today ):
"Whether or not you approve of the behavior the homosexual couple DID ruin the prom for everyone else. Making a stand is fine until innocent people are harmed and in this case that's what happened.
This young lady should step aside and withdraw her lawsuit. It would show her classmates that she cares about them and it would further her cause more then anything else she could do at this point!"

This is what the majority of people think (those outside of OS), that we should just fake straight, try to pass. That being ourselves is somehow wrong and a desperate cry for attention.
Hell, I thought that for 30 years about my own bisexuality. That if both sexes appealed, why on earth should I put myself and my family through the stress of a homosexual relationship. I've come to the conclusion that it's just not that easy. It doesn't stay in it's box as much you try.
Two girls went together at my prom. One was a known lesbian. The other was just a good friend. No one cared. This was in 1998.

I don't understand why school systems seem to be going backwards in their social thinking. It's really awful.
