Palin in action abusing her child
Simple Sarah Palin is back in the news and once again exploiting her little Down baby in an attempt to score cheap political points. What a disgusting thing to do.
"The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's "death panel" so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their "level of productivity in society," whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil."
There is no excuse for anyone to say such a thing. It is an awful, evil lie which is bad enough but to use your Down Syndrome baby to make such a vile point, is offensive to anyone who cares about children. She is abusing her child and I can prove it.
First, is it irresponsible to have a child at age 44? The answer is debatable but is it risky? There is no debate on that. This is not a moral judgment but one simply based on statistics.
As women age, there is a greater chance that the cells in her eggs will not divide properly. This increases the risk of having a child with Down syndrome. At age 30 the chances of having a Down Syndrome baby is 1-900. Women who are 35 years old have a one out of 385 chance . Forty-year-old women have a one out of 106 chance. By age 45, the risk increases to one out of 30. Hence, having a child at 44, like she did, took the odds from extremely low and rare to a one in thirty risk. Only about nine percent of total pregnancies occur in women 35 years or older each year, but about 25% of babies with Down syndrome are born to women in this age group. Now, is terminating the baby proper? Wow, I can't really answer that. Most would say of course not! But what kind of life will one be condoning? It is unsettling on many levels.
I was trained as a Special Education teacher so I know Down kids. I have worked with and loved 18 of these extraordinary children in my life. In many ways, they have inherent traits that most of us only dream of obtaining. For instance, they are so caring, loving, forgiving, appreciative of little things, and non-judgmental. One of the highlights of my life involved a Down boy, who at a Special Olympics event , swished a deep basketball three-pointer and the gym full of spectators went absolutely crazy in joy. It makes me tear up right now remembering it. Down Syndrome kids have been a colorful part of the tapestry of life. However, there is another side of their existence that is not seen.
These kids suffer. Half will end up with heart defects, or pulmonary hypertension, a serious lung condition. Many will develop serious hearing or vision problems especially while young which then can lead to language delays, which leads to communication problems , which then leads to social isolation. Many adult Down Syndrome folks live lonely, limited lives and even though most have low intelligence capabilities, they do become aware of their own limitations. They see others getting their own homes and apartments, having children, or driving cars. They are teased or shunned by others. True, some do live independently, but the norm is that they stay dependent on their parents for their entire life. They spend a lot of time in the doctor's office or hospital.
"Certain health conditions are more likely to develop in people with Down syndrome than in the general population. These are often a result of body structures that did not develop normally. Common health problems include:
- Respiratory infections. Most children with Down syndrome have abnormal respiratory tract structures, such as a narrow nose and airway passage, which makes them more prone to respiratory infections and persistent fluid in the middle ear. Some children also have an impaired immune system, which makes it difficult for them to fight off infections. Respiratory infection can lead to serious problems, especially in children who also have heart defects. Respiratory infections are a leading cause of death among children with Down syndrome, particularly during the first year of life.
- Hearing problems. The risk of developing some hearing loss is about 75% in children with Down syndrome.1 This may result from frequent infections and fluid buildup in the ear or, less often, nerve damage in the ear. Hearing loss affects listening skills and language development.
- Dental problems. Periodontal disease affects the tissues that surround the teeth. It is more common in people with Down syndrome, especially adults, than the general population. People who have Down syndrome have the same risk for dental cavities as people who do not have the condition.
- Seizures. Although the cause is unknown, seizures occur more often in people with Down syndrome than the general population.
- Breathing problems. Down syndrome causes some children to have sleep problems, such as frequent waking and restlessness. Also, about 50% to 75% of children with Down syndrome develop sleep apnea, in which there are short periods during sleep when breathing stops.1 This high rate may be caused by a combination of a small airway, poor muscle tone, and enlarged tonsils and/or adenoids.
- Unstable joints, poor muscle strength, and weak ligaments. These factors increase the risk of spinal problems and neck injury, especially dislocation of the first two neck bones (atlantoaxial dislocation). Children and adults younger than 21 are at more risk than older adults for some of these problems. Although serious spinal cord injury is rare, some people have exercise and physical activity restrictions. Surgery may be needed for spinal cord damage or suspected damage. Adults have an increased risk for arthritis of the spine, which can be disabling. Foot problems are also more common in people with Down syndrome than the general population, probably because of loose ligaments.
Other health problems are also more common in people with Down syndrome than in the general population, such as:
- Weight problems. Many children with Down syndrome are significantly overweight. They burn calories at a slower rate than normal and often do not exercise regularly. Weight problems can be minimized by emphasizing a balanced diet and providing frequent opportunities for recreational exercise.
- Skin problems. Skin conditions that can affect teenagers with Down syndrome include folliculitis, dry skin (xerosis), acne, atopic dermatitis, chronic skin inflammation with scaling and crusted patches (seborrheic dermatitis), and fungal infections of the skin and nails." (source--
I am very critical of the Palins for taking that young Down kid around on airplanes. This in itself is abusive. Why? Like I mentioned, 75% of these kids have a lot of hearing and inner ear problems, especially while young. They are flying this baby around on airplanes which is tough on regular ears. They are putting this baby's hearing at risk also by taking him to large gatherings with cheering, screaming and loud music. If this little baby loses some hearing this early, then he won't be able to hear words and his language development will be delayed. This will make it hard for him to work or play with other children and ultimately lower his IQ which will already be in the 60-80 range anyway. Behavior problems could follow.
The early years are especially important for these kid especially 0-3 years of age. Much can be done with early intervention, playing with water tables, working on language, teaching social skills, getting out into the community for experiences etc. Where does this poor kid spend his days? He should already be involved in an early training program headed by a professional. The earlier the training, the more dramatic the gains. This kid should be home not on display to get sympathy votes. Nobody, not even Simple Sarah Palin, has the right to exploit this little person. It is debatable to call Palin irresponsible for having the baby at an advanced age but there is no debate that traveling around with this Down baby is.
None of us would allow some abusive person to beat their kid in public in front of us yet most tolerate Simple Sarah Palin's abuse of Trig in full view of the public and don't say a word. Well, I just did. She is either totally ignorant of the challenges of Down Syndrome infants or doesn't give a hoot. Either way the woman should be made to answer for this abuse. But this may be the first time you have heard about it.
This woman, Simple Sarah, is on par with mothers who drink alcohol while pregnant or have their babies run around with baby bottles filled with Coke. But she is also dangerous. I know this. She went to the University of Idaho in Moscow where I work. A college known for beer drinking , partying and bad football teams. She graduated with a degree in journalism but never wrote a word for the very good college weekly newspaper.
She was guided spiriituality by one pastor Doug Wilson who is a noted racist. My report on this entitled Topless Car Washes, Lots of Beer and Crazy Christians , published on the Daily Kos, was picked up on several sites before the fall election.
We hate the pastor of Christ's Church , Doug Wilson, here in Moscow. He and his followers own about a third of Moscow. They even have this small Christian college in the center of town. Here is a sample of Doug Wilson's thinking:
"I take it as a given that any conservative Christian who addresses cultural issues at all is not worth his salt if he does not get himself accused of racism. I am convinced that unless we are drawing that charge somehow, some way, then we are not doing our part to threaten the prevailing multi-cultural hoohah. It is therefore important to incur the charge of racism. It is equally important that the charge be a slander and a falsehood." (2005)
This ridiculous man is 'the' man for fundamentalist believers. He created a national controversy when he released a book- Southern Slavery, As It Was. His basic thesis is that slavery was not a sin because it is in the Bible. and that slave owners were "righteous Christians who were forced to fight a war against wicked Unitarian Yankess and Bible-hating abolitionists.
"Writing for the board of Christ Church, Doug Jones states that his church believes that slavery is a sin, but his pastor Doug Wilson and his co-author Steve Wilkins never say this in their “Southern Slavery, As It Was” (Canon Press, 1996). The thesis of the essay is clear: using the Bible as sanction and guide, white slave owners were righteous Christians who were forced to fight a war against wicked Unitarian Yankees and Bible-hating abolitionists "pp. 12-13).
In Wilson's first response to "Slavery Revisited" (Moscow Pullman Daily News, Oct. 11&12), he made no corrections about his quoted comments about slavery. Here he had a chance to retract his support for slavery, but he did not do so. (In a column on November 21, he had yet another chance to retract his views.) In that article Wilson says that slavery is not a sin if the owner treats his slaves humanely. Then comes a passage, not disputed by Wilson and contained in the essay: “There has never been a multi-racial society which has existed with such mutual intimacy and harmony in the history of the world" (p. 24). This is unequivocal support for racial slavery, unless you want to make the ludicrous claim that Southerners were not racists. Besides, the U.S. at that time was a racist nation by law. Not only did the constitutional provision that blacks were partial persons make racism legal, but also the indirect voting power of slaves in apportioning congressional districts made any legislative abolition of slavery virtually impossible.(PAGE BY PAGE: DOUG WILSON’S SUPPORT FOR RACIAL SLAVERY By Nick Gier, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, University of Idaho)
Simple Sarah Palin may be a joke to many on the left. But she is no joke to me. She is a racist, a religious nut of wild proportions, has less edcuation than any politician in modern history- a simple degree in journalism at a land grant agricultural college and will say anything and do anything for attention. She is a dangerous , disgusting human being. Remember her irritating voice shouting in arenas:
"Pal-ing around with Terrorists!"
Now, I have a shout for you, Palin.
Quit abusing your little boy!

One more on the negative scorecard for Sarah.
I suspect she's just ignorant about putting her baby on a plane, or if she does know the dangers, she's choosing to believe that maybe it's God will that she go ahead and do this for the greater good. Or something. Who the frig knows.
As a friend recently mentioned, veteran and war hero John McCain must have his head in his hands daily at the sheer horror at having unleashed this crazyperson on the American public. After a lifetime of service to his country, whether you agree with his politics or not, he has to be horrified on some level that it's his fault she's become a public figure. Put his record and her record side by side, there's just no comparison. Why he EVER selected her as a running mate I'll never understand. What a blunder.
Thanks.
You make some excellent points. I was trained as a special ed teacher too. That kid Trig has and is going to have a hard life, mostly because of his mother. And yet she'll blather all day about family values.
Trust me...she wouldn't have made it through cosmetology school, especially the good ones. In New York and New Jersey, you need to attend a rigorous one-year program and accumulate 1,200 hours of instruction before taking the state's board exams. I fully suspect getting that journalism degree was a far easier path.
And yes, the University of Idaho was the FIFTH COLLEGE she attended. What's *that* about?
For awhile, it was debated as to whether she attended four or five colleges, but Slate confimed it was five.
kidding of course spuds... this is a great report and Sarah is
scary dangerous to me. mostly because (and go figure why)
some people take her seriously.
I don't think anyone can argue that what she did to the baby was way wrong (besides getting pregnant at that age in the first place).
OB/GYN's and fertility doctors aren't hesitating to counsel patients as young as their thirties about the hazards of having children.
Sarah Palin's facial expression says it all. They couldn't even find a better, more motherly picture, given the problems she's caused for a whole nation? We haven't heard the last of the problems that she's causing for that adorable little Trig.
I applaud the work of you and your profession in training and working with Downs kids. They have proven to be capable of working, getting through life, and producing some of the finest art I've seen. I just wish that my cousin had had the opportunities that are available today.
But, must you be so harsh on the topic of hearing loss and deafness? I have it on good note that losing one's hearing isn't the end of the world and doesn't lead to communication disorders and social isolation provided that the child with hearing loss is exposed to a properly prepared education curriculum, and if necessary, intense exposure to visual language and deaf culture.
The real problem is that most hearing people are selfish nincompoops. You heard it hear (arent I funny) first.
Palin claims "death panels" will decide who lives and who dies. We have death panels now --- they are called health insurance companies! Palin is a liar. Medicare doesn't have "death panels", so why not expand Medicare to include more people?

Yes...very proud of you for leaving this up to the reader.

If her ability to speak is any indication of her ability to read...well, let's just thank your lucky stars she didn't make it to the Whitehouse. And if her ability matches that of her followers, then that explains why they "get" her speeches while the rest of us remain flumoxed.
otherwise, good post

I agree that she is not likely taking proper care of the baby (or her other children for that matter) but she had the right to have the baby. I sometimes wondered why we conceived Tyler in such a terrible situation but then honest when I got sick and could not figure out why to wake up the next day . . . sometimes I did it solely so Tyler would have a mother. That sounds melodramatic but it is true.
Being someone whose (older) brother was born when our mother was 39 and hearing of the diatribes her doctors used against her, I do take issue with you stating how "debatable" it is whether or not she should have had a baby at that age (assuming it was even planned). A 1 in 30 chance of having a baby with Downs is still only a 3.33% chance of having a baby with Downs. When put in those terms, though, it seems a whole lot less scary. I wish the chances of my being sexually assaulted or getting breast cancer are that miniscule.
Still, this was an excellent and well researched post. Rated.
Palin saddens me. But not half as much as she disgusts me. Thank you for your insights and for calling abuse when you see it. Bravo.
Emma, Don, Brenda---Has there ever been a less educated, qualified person in the public eye before? Using your Down kid to make a point on madeup "death panels" is beyond low.
Ren. Lady--You are correct on the fact that the figures are still low. My point was to present the stats. The point was a minor one in my argument that using a Down baby, even as an example in her horrid statement, is abuse. I stay out of woman's issues of what to do about birth concerns, as I have no right. That is a private concern and I trust most women's judgments and decisions.
Hey, everybody Sally is back amount us.
Dorinda--I set you a PM and read your article on Tyler.
Harry and Roy--thanks for your comments.
mypsyche--thank you for taking time to comment
JK--Your comments are always appreciated so much.
Gmgaston--You make me laugh often and thanks for being so supportive.
Jon--I meant no harm about making hearing loss an issue. If I did, I missed the mark of this post.
Zum---I fear you are correct in sensing future problems for the boy.thank you for your comments.
Trig--Your screen name certainly did complicate matters on this one!
Owl-Umbrellak-thank you for taking the time to read and comment.
Stephen and Mr. M---great writing both of you the last few days.
Waking and Myraid---Love you both!
Second, why is it necessary to bash Land Grant colleges: "a simple degree in journalism at a land grant agricultural college."?! This is the same line Ann Coulter uses - so I ask that you rethink it. Why am I offended? Because I am the product of three different land grant universities: BS, MS, and PhD, and frankly, agriculture is a hell of a lot more technical than many majors. Sorry to blow off steam. Rated.
Personal thanks for laying this out so well, nice work.
The only question is if Palin is really, truly, truly speaking in tongues until Rapture in her internal dialogue? Or, is she "aware" of the false construct completely and simply using it as an evil tool?
She has also abused the other children, taking a backwoods bunch straight in front of the hot lights, they've been scarred for life, as Bristol's behavior confirms. It is a trip, really, that Levi seems entirely the smartest and most together of the whole troupe.
AUWE
Like I said, I'm in agreement - she's an idiot and everything else is pretty irrelevant!
I'd like to add something though. Sarah Palin isn't a single parent. Trig has a father too. Both Palins are equally responsible for their child's wellbeing and both seem to be failing miserably. I don't think Todd Palin should be let off the hook simply because his wife is the (in)famous one.
