There are presently efforts under way to fight school bullying. My response: It's about time.
The school needs to be a safe learning environment in which children learn the skills that they'll need to be effective people. It is not meant to be an environment in which children get traumatized for life. And school bullying traumatizes many, rendering their efforts and their gifts useless and costing vastly to the country for that reason.
There is a frequently made claim that such things strenghten a person's character. I have testimony of many that it does not. Instead it undermines self-confidence, reduces self-perception and causes problems throughout one's life.
Having been the shortest kid in class, and having been different from most classmates, I got picked on a lot during my schooling both in Russia and in America. I am now on good terms with most of my former classmates in both countries; but it took me a lot to get to that point, and many other people do not have the options that did I. Any number of people I know continue to struggle with the abuse that they received either from teachers or from other students. It has not helped them to be stronger people; it undermined whatever strengths they had.
What bullying actually does is this: Cause brain drain. The people are sabotaged from being able to grow into their potential, which keeps the country from reaping what they have to give. This makes it a national problem and something that weakens the country. And that makes it a matter of national interest to do away with school bullying.
