I received an email a few minutes ago, not long after I posted about 2-year old Shanelle Labuschagne's senseless death caused by a reckless driver.
The mail told of a couple travelling on one of Cape Town's freeways, who were nearly run off the road by two BMWs dicing (street racing) at high speed. Shortly afterwards ,the couple came across an accident scene but there was only one car. Since two other cars had pulled over to help, they drove off, only to discover further up the road...a car literally wrapped around a tree. I've included one of the photos they took.
I'm usually sceptical of such emails and do some online research before believing the stories. I couldn't find a newspaper article about this accident. However, I could've used the wrong search terms, the accident could've happened some time ago or the accident was simply one of so many that it didn't make much of an impact with the media.
Whatever the case, this is still a real accident, with horrific consequences. Just look at that car. The accident did take place in Cape Town because I recognised a few familiar things in the photos.
When will this madness stop?

I agree with you.
I admire beautiful cars and I understand why some people are car enthusiasts. But the problem is when that is taken too far - as you said, the car becomes an extension of their egos.
I once briefly dated a man who always drove very fast, weaving in and out of traffic. His driving scared the hell out me, especially since I'd been in three car accidents in my life. Even though I told him how scared I was and asked him not to drive that way when I was with him, he refused to change his habits. The way he drove was too bound up in who he thought he was.
Needless to say, I dumped him PDQ.
