Bio
I am a single 30-something from Cape Town, South Africa. I'm in IT (I believe for sins committed in a past life), currently working in the public sector but for many years previously in the private sector. I adore reading and am a proudly acknowledged book slut. I like being on my own and have made peace with the fact that I'm one of those people who live in their own heads. I like knowing stuff simply for the sake of knowing. I love cats and am an unashamed sucker for any cute kitty pic.

It breaks my heart

Rate: 3 Flag

This morning I read an article on a local news site - News24.co.za - that broke my heart. My country is no stranger to horror stories of violence inflicted on women and children but every now and again I hear of something that renders me incapable of shielding myself emotionally.

This is such a story.

A 5-year old girl was found tied to a kitchen table, chewing on a bone. It was clear she'd been repeatedly raped and it is suspected that her mother (a prostitute) rented out her daughter. The child cannot walk or talk. She might have been eating her own faeces. She's aggressive and does not know how to respond to loving treatment.

I am so angry right now that I'm struggling to find the words to write about this. What the fuck is wrong with people? What?

The mother, the men who raped the child...what kind of creatures are these people? How does someone look into the eyes of a child and see nothing wrong with using that child as if she were worth no more than an inanimate object?

I can't even begin to imagine the life this little girl has led up until now. I can't imagine what it will take to restore her to physical health, never mind mental health. Wil she ever learn to accept love? Will she ever learn to trust people?

I don't want to put this little girl's story "in context". I don't want to even attempt to understand the socio-economic circumstances of her mother or the men who used this child. Because you know what? Millions of men and women around the glove live in abject poverty and misery yet they don't rape children! They don't rent out their children for others to abuse!

I hope with all my heart that this little girl will recover fully, that she will find a new life - one where she is loved and nurtured and always told that she is beautiful and special. I hope that she gets to a place where she doesn't even have to wonder if she is loved but can take it for granted that she is.

It says in the article that the mother has been charged with neglect. I'm not familiar with the legal system in South Africa, but surely this is a case of more than just neglect. In cases like this, I fully support the death penalty for the mother and everybody who was aware of the condition in which this poor baby lived. In the slowest, most painful way possible.

I hope the little girl recovers, both physically and mentally.
Hi Natalie

I don't know where our legal system stands on this either but I agree with you - neglect does not even begin to touch on what this woman did. She and all others should receive the harshest possible punishment.

I'm not in favour of the death penalty but, as you said, in cases like this I can't help but wish that monsters like these can simply be removed from the face of the earth.
I don't usually advocate it either, but only because of the chance of innocent people being killed. There are way too many cases of child abuse and I honestly don't think people like this child's mother can be rehabilitated. I don't think she should even be given a chance to.

Thanks for posting about this. Creating awareness is a good thing.
Like the little girl in North Carolina, her mom "Rented" out her 7 or so year old daughter and then the little girl was murdered.

I can't watch those stories because they make me wish to go and find these "people" and end up and kill them!!! :-(
Hi Tinkertink

I heard about that little girl on the radio one morning. A local talk radio station has a morning US Report and UK Report. The US reporter spoke about the girl you mentioned. I was absolutely horrified when I heard the story.
makes you want to throw up
