This life, therefore, is not godliness
But the process of becoming godly,
Not health but getting well,
Not being but becoming,
Not rest but exercise.
We are not now what we shall be,
But we are on the way.
The process is not yet finished,
But is actively going on.
This is not the goal,
But it is the right road.
At present everything does not
Gleam and sparkle,
But everything is being cleansed.
-Martin Luther (1483-1546)
Perhaps you did not realize that the unintentional founder of the Reformation was a process psychologist – neither did I, until I came across this remarkable text.
This 16th century reflection resonates so strongly over time, I wanted to share it with you. It has accompanied me over the years as an idea, a prayer, and a reminder. We are just fine in our imperfection. All is well -- we're on the way!
Godspeed,
