OS Open Call: If you were King How Would You Prioritize World Problems?
Hypothetically you have now inherited the world's problems. Billions of people with different needs expect you to help them. Where do you start? Do you start in your own country or backyard?
I'm going to attempt to list and defend my priorities as King of the World as I hope others will.
My list is short:
1) Religion
2) Human Overpopulation
3) Education
In our hypothesis it is assumed as King of the World you can affect change on your chosen problems.
Defense of my priorities:
Worthy Conflicts/Issues: Abortion, Energy Crisis, Global Warming, World Economy, Wars, Gay Marriage/Equal Rights, Technology, Pedophiles, Nuclear Weapons, Global Warming, Saving Animals/Habitats, Peace on Earth, Socialism/Greed in the name of Capitalism, Technology, Despots, Birth Control.
As an example "Peace on Earth" will suffice. Peace on Earth is not reality based, since all life involves conflict. From trees blocking out the sun from other plants to humans warring over resources, etc. As long as life exists, so will conflict.
Peace on Earth can only become reality with the extinction of life. To wish for peace and the existence of life, while laudable, is a futile attempt to conjure up two diametrically opposed ideals (such as good and evil) and ask them to play nice.
All of my three priorities play negative roles in "Peace on Earth". Religious views are a cause of overpopulation, which leads to wars over finite resources or wars over religious beliefs.
The less educated are preyed upon buy religions, to grow their flock. Creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of the above mentioned atrocities.
The genesis of human retardation I propose is religion. We are merely children with better toys. We now have the ability to create our own apocalypse.
I wouldn't hand a child a loaded gun. Religion is a nuclear weapon, it teaches us not to advance emotionally, rationally, "Accept the words we wrote and re-wrote... that God told us to".
Religion takes no responsibility for the souls its teachings brought into the world. Religion fights knowledge (Galileo as example), religions only want warriors, God's warriors (cannon fodder).
In 1800 the world's approximate human population was .98 billion in the roughly two hundred years since human population has spiked to 6.7 billion. The demand for Earth's finite resource has spiked with our growth. Add to this the industrial revolution and the resulting pollution and we arrive at our current state of events.
Humanity itself is has been here but a partial blink of an eye. Life on Earth has existed for hundreds of millions of years, humans 50-70 thousand. Yet in the last 200 years we've added approximately 6 billion people. It is estimated that 10% of all the humans to have inhabited Earth are alive today scrambling for resources.
Without action the exploding human population will inevitably lead to more wars over resources. This is where education could play a positive role and religion is detrimental. Religion for preying on the less educated (for their own gain) and preaching against birth control and sex education.
This is not to say religion doesn't have positive attributes. However, history provides evidence that religion's actions have had a more negative impact than their supposedly peaceful, moral and ethical teachings.
Abortion, Gay Marriage, Birth Control and Stem Cell Research are just a few of the conflicts we're engaged in solely due to religious beliefs. We would not be using political means (votes), expending tax dollars (separation of church and state) or arguing amongst ourselves (as vehemently) over these issues if religious views were not involved. Education also plays a part. Overpopulation is aided here as well.
Global Warming, War, Pollution, Dwindling Resources, Saving Animals/Habitats, Energy Crisis, Fossil Fuels, Terrorism, Alternative Energy, Starvation, Pandemics just to name a few, are all impacted by my three picks: Religion which aids overpopulation which in turn is aided by lack of education which aids religion.
Religion, overpopulation and education feed off each other, in a vicious circle, and create the above mentioned issues as well as many I missed or do not know of. They also feed the future conflicts yet to be faced.
This is an abbreviated defense of my three nominees for top priorities if I were "King of the World".
Is it realistic to think humans could solve these problems? The evidence leans heavily towards "no".
We pay lip service to the future and live for today.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this. It's a hypothesis, a series of questions with infinite answers followed by infinite questions.
I look forward to your responses. Choose one or three or five... I'd like to see what drives us, what makes you passionate, angry, happy...

Seriously, clearly HUNGER to me is first. Then, after hunger, SHELTER and some kind of good work/job for everyone. After that, I'm betting some other stuff got solved without me doing much.
Then, I'd pretty much end large corporations. Once you get to a certain size, you have to stop or split off.
That'd take care of a bunch of stuff right there.
Then, I'd make all drugs legal.
Of course, by this time, someone would have assassinated me. Probably when I suggested ending hunger.
If I had one wish that I could wish this holiday season, it would be that all the children to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace.
If I had two wishes I could make this holiday season, the first would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing in the spirit of harmony and peace. And the second would be for 30 million dollars a month to be given to me, tax-free in a Swiss bank account.
You know, if I had three wishes I could make this holiday season, the first, of course, would be for all the children of the world to get together and sing, the second would be for the 30 million dollars every month to me, and the third would be for encompassing power over every living being in the entire universe.
And if I had four wishes that I could make this holiday season, the first would be the crap about the kids, definitely, the second would be for the 30 million, the third would be for all the power, and the fourth would be to set aside one month each year to have an extended 31-day orgasm, to be brought out slowly by Rosanna Arquette and that model Paulina-somebody, I can't think of her name.
Of course my lovely wife can come too and she's behind me one hundred percent here, I guarantee it.
Wait a minute, maybe the sex thing should be the first wish, so if I made that the first wish, because it could all go boom tomorrow, then what do you got, y'know? No, no, the kids, the kids singing would be great, that would be nice.
But wait a minute, who am I kidding? They're not going to be able to get all those kids together. I mean, the logistics of the thing is impossible, more trouble than it's worth!
So -- we reorganize! Here we go.
First, the sex thing. We go with that. Second, the money. No, we got with the power second, then the money. And then the kids.
Oh wait, oh jeez, I forgot about revenge against my enemies! Okay, I need revenge against all my enemies, they should die like pigs in hell! That would be my fourth wish.
And, of course, my fifth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace.
Thank you everybody and Merry Christmas.
The King being in this case our king Obama. What would you do if you were him?
Good answers. I'm sorry, but I must ask... we should just keep breeding and figure out how to feed and house people and more people?
I like the drug idea... just the calming ones...
Thanks for your thoughts.
But Hunger, safe/clean environment and shelter. Would be first on the list. Then it would be everyone to have jobs with equal pay and treatment.
I have to go think some on this some more.
Very interesting post and I like your perspectives on things.
a. Give Dick Cheney a brush and a can of cleanser and tell him to scrub every toilet in America—on his knees.
b. Give a bar of soap to Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove and Anne Coulter and tell them to wash their mouths out until further notice.
Probably some other stuff to, but that would be a good start.
Thanks for the positive feedaback on my thoughts.
All good ideas. However, they seem to come from one political ideologue.
I was hoping to span and bridge the ideologues and create new thought.
I made an attempt to delve deeper into the topics.
I think I gave an invite to philos... djohn? gordo?
I must have missed them.
Having read just about every version of "Dune" ever written, I don't hold out much hope beyond "we'll be here until God is just sick and tired of us."
Pick your favorite movie, god knows the ending, you know the ending. Take The Godfather for example... we/god watch for enjoyment. I watch it over and over and still enjoy it.
Knowing the ending... Earth and it's life is like a VCR tape god watches over and over. God really needs to switch to DVD's...
I do better with quick topical crap.
I thought this worthy of the time I put into it...
Then I would hope that the average person on the street would understand that the basic foundation of every spiritual tradition that has ever existed in the world has been slightly different versions of what we call the Golden Rule. Treat others as you would want to be treated.
I would hope that an educated population with a hunger for knowledge would cause Fox News to go bankrupt. They would understand that things like news, health care and democracy should not be for sale. They would understand that the majority should never be allowed to vote to take away the rights of a minority. They would understand that an opinion is not a fact. They would understand the complexities of language and persuasion, and would never be tricked into following some charismatic leader like sheep going to slaughter.
But most of all they would understand that the very essence of life is change. When we stop changing, when we stop searching, when we stop loving, life is over.
dustbowldiva, jk brady, spiritmansf, thanks for the honest answers.
I appreciate the new factors to consider.
You nailed it... the world's only problem is "us".
Can we be fixed?
I don't want to be complicit in their existence. So I do the futile thing and tilt at windmills. Hoping, against rational thought, that I might make a difference.
At least I'm on record for what I believe.
It's almost nothing. But it's the best I got...
I would give everyone a free will to do whatever they wished to do - those who decided to serve me as their king - would do my will and as a reward - they would become kings also
I SHALL NUKE US!!
:)
Okay, *hits the restart button* Population control, too many people, not enough love, or maybe too much love, then we got to house and feed and clothe those who are here already, then give them some job, a fair wage, a living wage to keep them in house and such.
Add some education for those folks, so maybe they can grow in wealth.
And then when they get too smart for me as king, I NUKE THE PLANET AGAIN!! Reset!! Rebuild!!
Hey it works in those Sim games on the computer!! :)

clock-time.
clock time was a old concept :`
When the breath of wind ruffles the waters.
It's from Admiral William Smyth's Sailor's Word-Book.
Watchmaking is interesting. Sure, there are some quacky notions and Weird [ a cool word ] was more vogue. I am rambling tho? But the "clock was supposed to have knowledge [ symbolism ] of what was happening in the house." Or, the nation. Clocks were supposed to be in syncretic amalgamation ... in harmony ... in orderly rhythm.
Harmonious, and in proper sequence unfolding... IF a clock stopped it was a bad OMEN. The anonymous 'Laws of Etiquette' or, 'Short Rules and REflections for Conduct in Society' contribted thoughts on Clock-Calm.
"It is not considered fashionable to carry a watch. What has a fashionable on a man have to do with time?" Besides, he never goes into those obscure parts of the town where there is no public clocks, and his servants will always tell him when it is time to dress for dinner [Breakfast]."
Watch? IF a watch stopped while you wore one, it was believed by the DC politicians, that you were surely [ sorely] drop dead as a mallard dead-duck some future day? Who put the ring around a feathered duck?
Do a duck know?
Ducks wear a clock?
Ducks eat green algae.
Nature tells ducks time.
It's time to duck snore out.
Farmers eat deviled duck eggs.
Arthur very cool, if over my head... quite a big output for late at night...
I read on another post you've been deleted before... why would someone delete a poem?
Even if you disagree, it's a most eloquent way to disagree.
