Alone For Christmas One Last Time

Rate: 3 Flag

The space heater kicked on again rumbling and buzzing,

quickly glowing angry red as it battled for a hold in the ice cold room

and gloved fingers edged closer to the fiery red hornet

seeking a warm embrace in the electric cold of being alone

Radio driven carols droned in the darkness of the kitchen

 whispery voices acting as the only other hint of human in the room

joyful music of Santa and meals and families all together in love

wafting through frigid air in home as she sat cold and vacant

A single ornament, broken, sits upon her coffee table,

a monument to a time and place where life was pregnant with joy

and now a monument to all she no longer has in her grasp;

to knowing that there is nothing for her to look forward to this Christmas

She traces her name on the frostiness of her coffee table and whispers it,

the reminder that she is somebody, if only to herself and God Almighty;

then gazes out the glazed windows to a bitterness reflected in her heart

of abandonment and being forgotten and left with too much cold

                   …and too little food

The only Christmas lights this night are reflected

off the tears streaming down her cheeks reflecting outside lamps

as she reaches over to turn off the space heater

and accepts being held,

                       even if by death

Ok...back and happy about it!
Hard to tell by the tone of the poem...but I am! :)
Powerful images, JD. Wonderful to see you here.... wonderful to be here! Hoping OS keeps improving and this can become a regular thing again :-)
Really sound nice, i like it :)
Ah, not the poem of joy I was expecting at all! But a poem of joy and love and life lost.

But as there is joy in life ... and all around us it is right now as with the festive season ... so too there are those who struggle and do not have any joy whatsoever in their life. The poor, the hungry, the homeless, those who are all alone ... no, there is not much joy for them at all.

'Tis the season we need to remember those who do not have joy in their life. Thank you, JD, for reminding me. I do so appreciate that you think of those who have nothing at this time of year.

In reading your words, I am also reminded of the words of the Ghost of Christmas Present:

There is never enough time to do or say all the things that we would wish. The thing is to try to do as much as you can in the time that you have. Remember Scrooge, time is short, and suddenly, you're not here any more.

We'd all do well to heed those words and do what we can to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

Thank you, JD.
A wonderful tribute JD and you have grown beyond the best of creation.
Sad yet beautiful...
