Certainly, there is such a thing as a free country to the extent that people aren't imprisoned unreasonably, taxed unreasonably or compelled to obey unreasonable laws. Ok, there's such a thing as a relatively free country.
However, I think that real freedom is personal freedom. Look at the Soviet dissidents in the 60's and 70's, such as Solzhenitsyn doing philosophy and in a cancer ward or a prison. He was mentally free. (Even better, his fame brought physical freedom, too, eventually.) Conversely, people also make their own prisons out of addiction, fear, obsessions, and bad judgement. They become imprisoned in sick relationships. They give away their freedom.
My hope on July 4 is that everyone enjoys what freedoms their country offers, but most of all the freedom to be emotionally healthy and strong and to be themselves in their relationships.
