ADVICE FOR MEN about their Muses. Ladies Allowed to read.

(subtitle:  A SHORT SKIT FOR FRESHMAN ORIENTATION, REGARDING YOUR 'SECRET LIFE' : FOR YOUNG MEN)

bob dylan: "i never could learn to drink that blood

and call it wine"..."has anybody seen my love?"

...........................................................................

A man’s Muse morphs, boys. Remember that.

What I am talking about is your “Anima”, in Jungian terms, which I for one think should maybe make a comeback soon.  It’s usually 50 years after a great thinker’s death that we start to consider him (or her) a genius. After denigrating their ideas, which nonetheless sink like a cleansing rain deep into the "dirt"---the soil--- of  our collective unconscious.

"Anima": for a male, the “primary anthropomorphic archetype of the unconscious mind, as opposed to both the theriomorphic and inferior-function of the shadow archetypes, as well as the abstract symbol sets that formulate the archetype of the Self,”says Wikipedia, which is kind of our Collective Sub-Conscious, I suppose...

Anthropo-morphic archetypes...what do they do?

.  “In the unconscious of the male, it finds expression as a feminine inner personality: anima”

A

(equivalently, in the unconscious of the female , this archetype  is expressed as a masculine inner personality:animus. But that wherof I cannot speak, because I’m a guy, I shall remain silent.)

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

As I understand my Jungian theory, which is pretty damn good, the anima takes on aspects of all the women a fellow is exposed to in his life: his mother, first and foremost, then sisters if he is blessed to have them, as I am; girlfriends, galpals, f-buddies , and assorted women-acquaintances of a non-sexual typology. These last three categories are being evolved in society even as we speak here today.

  All of them are, actually.

That’s the point: collectively, and individually, archetypes morph.  They change. Evolve.

(I would love to merge Jungian theory with Evolutionary Sociobiology and throw in Relativity and maybe Quantum Mechanics if I am having a good day, so I would love to get your ideas in order to steal them...)

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

For example, here is a conversation I had recently with my Muse, or Anima. Same thing.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Muse: “Well buddy boy aint u full of yrself today!”

Me: “Yes I am! I am happy! What’s wrong with that?”

“Not a thing. Why do u think there’s something wrong?”

“Your tone.”

“Hm.”

Me: “I will SOON be happy. That’s why I’m happy!”

Muse: “That makes about as much sense as u ever do.”

“Oh, u!”

“Hee-hee”

“I like it when u tease.”

“I know that full well…”

Me: “Anyway, once I get my new teeth I will be spectacular.”

Muse: “Won’t it hurt, the extractions?”

“maybe, I don’t give a damn, though. I want all these chipped old miserable choppers out of my head for good. Then I can smile again. I haven’t smiled in 25 years!”

AA

Muse:  “You exaggerate a little, as usual, bub.”

Me: “As Emerson said, ‘do I exaggerate? Very well, I exaggerate. I am male!’ “

“He never said that”

“I believe he should have.”

“very well. “

“Anyway, they are going to tear open my gums, yank out those teeth, and put the new ones in. “

Muse: “And then your life will be better?”

“You bet. I won’t be so self conscious anymore.”

“Why are you self-conscious? You’re a completely ok looking guy.”

“No I am not.”

“Well, you are, but my telling you , or anyone telling you, won’t make you believe it, til you yourself do.”

“Exactly. When I get my teeth.”

“Ok.”

Me: “Hey! Do beautiful gals like you ever get self-conscious?”

Muse: “You know we do. But I cannot answer that.  Anyway, ‘handsome is as handsome does’, my mother always told me.”

Me: “Hey, so did my mother!”

“Aint that a coincidence!”

She can be, neilpaul, but she does it teasingly and
for my own good, always.
I trust her.
I built her to be a bit "hard love".
Also softness,
but ONLY WHEN I DESERVE IT.
Is this what they call pyschic onanism? Or is it even kinkier?
I was you, I would listen up.

Listen up good.
Matt, this is not at all onanism unless..well...that is a matter
for another venue.
It is simply two diametrically dialectically delightfuly
opposed psychic principles/archetypes/VOICES
having a civil conversation.

"i'll go along with charade
til i can think my way out
i know it was all a big joke
whatever it was all about
maybe someday
i'll remember
to forget"
Nicky, I listen up and down and
two ways sideways.
that is why i=bipolar II..
Lol, I think your Anima sounds like a very wise, funny, and kind counterpart to the rest of your you-ness (sorry don't know the proper Jungian term)! :)
This was excellent James, talk about getting it right. This is so right on where it belongs. A great read.

Clay: thank u! my “youness” is my ego, which is a part, only an archetype, but an important one. MY ‘SELF” IS WHAT COUNTS. Jung said: “the self is partly conscious (ego) but mostly unconscious.” He held out hope, contra Freud, that this self could be “individuated”.

What the Buddhists say is that even “self” is illusion.

Jung could not bring himself to believe this, alas.. Nor can 99.9999999999999 percent of us.
Funny, I always pictured you smiling. There is that crinkle in the corners of your words that told me so.
James,

This is fascinating. Your inner self is beautiful. You are posting such thoughtful comments all over OS all the time. If handsome is as handsome does, then you are quite handsome indeed.

I can see from your photograph for your bio that you have very kind eyes too. Be gentle with yourself James. Be gentle.
scarlett, i smile in private, and also sneer with ironic majesty
that would make mr. bob zimmerman wanna copy me,
thanks
to his influence.
sneer.

smile.

would love to do both.

they say "first thing they notice is yr teeth."
ha, never show em..

just smirk.
or give a half smile.

sick of that.
want my MOUTH BACK.
DIARY,
those damn eyes are all i got.
plus i am losing my winter 2011 g-damn belly,
which ballooned to 35 inches.
gotta get down to 145, 33 inch waist, new teeth,
plus i got my hair.

that is all i got physically.

i also got that beautiful soul,
but as blake says, "BODY=OUTWARD MANIFESTATION
OF SOUL'
AND

he never ever lies to me, unlike idiots and fools and
mean people.
It is good you have a muse.
You’re a complex and beautiful person, your posts and comments throughout OS speak volumes. You had to know I’d come check this out for no other reason than you told me not to….HA
James,

Please do this. Wander up to the nearest mirror. Look at yourself. Really look. And smile.

You have a beautiful soul, and it shows inside...and out. Take another look. Of gratitude and appreciation. For all the parts of you.

Remember to be kind to yourself James.
Bedelia: a muse is an Anima… it is not real, in the corporeal sense. It is realer, it is , um , spiritual. And it grows every day. It grew with this comment. You know that. I t would be good if u
Were well, as
Well,
Ha!
ha back..big one..

Mcs, I am an expert in reverse psychology due to a good education by ..my anima, what else?

Thank u.
that last one was for grace/hope/joy,
and a pretty damn fine bit of
company,
she sez. ha.

diary.
Fun post, James, well done. R
Evolutionary Sociobiology? Relativity? Quantum Mechanics?

Sir James, you are a man after my own heart.
Anima or enigma? sure to find out one day, James.
I like the supposition. I will have to listen more.
First, thank you for using the term archetype correctly-so many people use prototype and archetype in the same sense, and they are different.
Second, there must be the equivalent for women. I listen to men - intently - to understand what they find exciting about women and then I play on that. Men seem, on one hand, to want aggressive, wanton women and, on the other, to want shy, scared women.
Can I steal your dialog some day-it is the perfect example of what I just mentioned. I like it.
I love the Woody Allen-ish dialog with your Muse! Now, regarding the teeth thing: Dylan says, "Waiting to find out what price/You have to pay to get out of/going through all these things twice." James, tooth extraction is something you want to go through only once! I await your bringing together of Jung and quantum mechanics. Some string theorists claim there are 11 dimensions--about the number Jungian theory claims for the human mind!!!
Animus/Anima=Yin/Yang

It is not all that difficult to understand.

Why is there so much attraction between men and women?

The answer is :Yin/Yang
And what a muse. What a piece.
"Well, it's always been my nature
To take chances
My right hand drawing back
While my left hand advances
Where the current is strong
And the monkey dances
To the tune
Of a concertina
Blood dryin' in my yellow hair
As I go from shore to shore
I know what it is
That has drawn me to your door
But whatever could it be
Makes you think
You've seen me before
Angelina
Oh, Angelina
Oh, Angelina
His eyes were two slits
Makin' a snake proud
With a face that any painter would paint
As he walked through the crowd
Worshiping a God
With the body of a woman
Well endowed
And the head of a hyena
Do I need your permission
To turn the other cheek?
If you can read my mind
Why must I speak?
No, I have heard nothing
About the man
That you seek
Angelina
Oh, Angelina
Oh, Angelina
In the valley of the giants
Where the stars and stripes explode
The peaches they were sweet
And the milk and honey flowed
I was only following instructions
When the judge
Sent me down the road
With your subpoena
When you cease to exist
Then who will you blame?
I've tried my best to love you
But I cannot play this game
Your best friend
And my worst enemy
Is one and the same
Angelina
Oh, Angelina
Oh, Angelina
There's a black Mercedes
Rollin' through the combat zone
Your servants are half dead
You're down to the bone
Tell me, tall man
Where would you like
To be overthrown
In Jerusalem or Argentina?
She was stolen from her mother
When she was three days old
Now her vengeance has been satisfied
And her possessions have been sold
He's surrounded by God's angels
And she's wearin' a blindfold
But so are you
Angelina
Oh, Angelina
Oh, Angelina
I see pieces of men marching
Trying to take Heaven by force
I can see the unknown rider
I can see the pale white horse
In God's truth name
Tell me what you want
And you'll have it of course
Just step into the arena
Beat a path of retreat
Up them spiral staircases
Pass the tree of smoke
Pass the angel with four faces
Begging God for mercy
And weepin'
In unholy places
Angelina
Oh, Angelina
Oh, Angelina
Oh, Angelina
Oh, oh, Angelina
Oh, oh, Angelina"

You already understand the Transference, with no help from Wikipedia I may add. When you understand this I will owe you a few beers!
I've never understood the whole Muse thing. Maybe, I don't have one? but, doesn't everyone have one? Seems that primarily men do... I don't know.... maybe, I should get one...
Thoth: It was fun to write. Thank you!

Victoria: The theorizing is in the nascent stage, but progressing by punctured equilibriums. Damn equilibrums, they never stay put!

Brazen: Muse, if one chooses, can be dominatrix, sure. Anything goes with these archetypes!

Rita: Enigma always, Rita. Anima is, after all, feminine!

Keiko: always feel free to plunder from me! The old Madonna/Whore complex, it is very real indeed.
Heidi: well said, and succinctly!

Mary: gracious thanks.

Jerry: Jung had a keen interest in the findings of the latest physics. I will be confident in my theorizing knowing that Carl would approve. I cannot guarantee the FINAL THEORY will be in any sense of the word “scientific”, but at least it will be mind-bending and full of fancy, just like the cosmos itself. Did you hear about this Dark Matter and Dark energy? Yikes. In a sense, they are saying that the universe is a “battle” between light and dark. Too weird, hm?
James,this dialogue is really cute.
I mean what can be sensed between the two.
Papageno/Papagena,ever so sweet, when you get to see the right performers.I will try to send you a link.
http://youtu.be/jujGSXoa2QQ
This is just fun with MezzoSoprano Cecilia Bartoli and Entertainer Thomas Gottschalk.I think they are doing an excellent job capturing the fun of Papageno and Papagena as lovebirdies.
Thanks, Heidi! Lovebirds speak in pure poetry!
Thanks, Heidi! Lovebirds speak in pure poetry!
http://youtu.be/ql2A9fgklQ4Here is a very good performance´The lovebirdies full of joy yet childlike .That is exactly what lovers do,at least in the beginning.
James, reading my comments here on your blog,I have to add that in the first posting speaking about the dialogue,I actually meant you and your muse, that's what I found so cute and got reminded of Papageno/Papagena...Yin/Yang...Animus/Anima.
I did not how to install the links so you could listen to the two performances.
I didn't know anything about the concept of an "anima". Can/does mine look like Jude Law? Or Bob Dylan would be just fine, come to think of it.... I also loved the conversation between you and yours - and what's up with the teeth? A reference to another common image that comes up from our subconscious from time to time (losing teeth is fairly common for people to dream about)?
A quatrain or two or three inspired by

My Muse

My muse is a seductress
Who keeps me on the edge
And pushes to the limit
Of this precarious ledge

She tempts me at my waking
My dreams, she ever haunts
She revels in my failings
And pierces me with taunts

Holding out the Holy
Just beyond my grasp
A sly, seductive serpent
I'm poisoned by this asp
I think my animus talks too much. My sister says I think like a man.

Lezlie
Listen to the inner girl always:-)
Cool write.
"in the unconcious of the male,it finds expression as a feminine inner personality:anima"

AND

vice versa.
...who has taken your mouth away?
JACK: Yeah, ‘angelina’ is a tough nut to crack . Best to look at it verse by verse, with only peripheral relationship existing between them. I love the ‘pieces of men marching/tryin to take heaven by force’ ‘
line.

Also: I have found that every Dylan song can be seen as existing externally, in the world of timespace history, or internally,, in the history of one soul….do I get that beer?

RAZZLE: You raise a good point. What sex are women’s muses? But: yeah, you gotta get one!

HEIDI: No worries! I found it & enjoyed it. Who took my mouth? Well, I guess I made it what it is. By dental neglect. Now I want a new mouth, please!!

ALYSA: What’s up w/teeth is that some have crumbled and cracked. No cavities, weirdly enough. The bones are strong. But the front smile area is really not pretty. Dreams come true!

TOM: Just out of reach,, exactly! That b…h knows more than She is telling me!!
