UNCLE WALTER CRONKITES 3rd DEATH BIRTHDAY

Rate: 15 Flag

Three years ago today, Walter Cronkite died from cerebrovascular disease, which is a ‘’ group of brain dysfunctions related to disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain.”

He was 92.

………………………………

I remember when he retired in 1980.

It was rather a traumatic event for a nerdy character like me, who had very few father figures in his life, apart from his biological father George, then 58 and showing the first signs of dementia  , hard to disambiguate from his alcoholic  alter ego . As Dad faded away, Uncle Walt was my last inlet to a certain sensibility I was accustomed to, due to the promise of a truly great Father...

……………………………..

Uncle Walter tried to soften the blow of his departure with this gentle lie: “For almost two decades, after all, we've been meeting like this in the evenings, and I'll miss that.

But those who have made anything of this departure,

I'm afraid have made too much.

This is but a transition, a passing of the baton.

A great broadcaster and gentleman,

Doug Edwards, preceded me in this job, and another, Dan Rather, will follow.”

…………………………………………………

A  boy must learn to take leave of his father. This was my first experience of it. I was beginning to take leave of George after 13 glorious years of utmost trust and admiration.  He was getting awfully strange , I intuited, but was unwilling to accept, yet.

Until the family apocalypse, which  weirdly yet appropriately dovetailed with Uncle Walt’s departure, and also the death of my grandfather.

Another George Emmerling! A German immigrant , who went peacefully from pneumonia at age 90. In that awful year, 1980. Wherein i entered junior high school,  a hell .

13 was a bad age to deal with all these losses.

……………………………………………………………….

Cronkite was Dad Amplified for me. Dad didn’t talk a lot. But if he did, he would sound like Uncle Walt.

One of the deepest aural/visual memories I have is of Uncle Walter’s voice/face/mustache/eyes  telling me “that’s the way it is”.

…………………………………………..

Up to 1980, Uncle Walt held me in his protection every night.

Then he was gone, and I was too.

……………………………………………

13 to 45  for me is rather a damn fool time. I was fatherless, and uncle-less too!

…………………………………………………..

  • For how many thousands of years now have we humans been

what we insist on calling "civilized?"

And yet, in total contradiction,

we also persist in the savage belief that we must occasionally,

at least, settle our arguments by killing one another.

While we spend much of our time and a great deal of our treasure in preparing for war, we see no comparable effort to establish a lasting peace.

Meanwhile, emphasizing the sloth in this regard,

those advocates who work for world peace by urging a system of world government

are called impractical dreamers.

Those impractical dreamers are entitled to ask their critics

what is so practical about war.

I never had a wise uncle.
One was a boxer, another drove a beer truck. Two died at birth so they are to count.
It seems good to find a proxy.
"hard to count" James.
That's what I meant. It's hard to count a dead uncle.
Two are about the same.
Yes, he was such a nice presence on TV. And I've missed hearing the word "avuncular", which was repeated 927,000 times when he died.

It was more traumatic for me when Walt Disney died. He was like God and Santa Claus rolled into one. I don't belive in either one now, but I still believe in the magic of Walt Disney.
a proxy is a most underrated thing. ALSO.

A dead uncle is what i hope not to get from u, uh, Uncle.
(now u see how i esteem my uncles?)
gary, walt, walter, what is it with these guys so named?
i agree.
so many dead uncles for us men.
the father?
we have such a love/hate ambivalent relationship with them.
but we love our uncles, we guys.
Yes.
I figured as much of course.
Not an easy moniker to obtain. Esteemed company noted.
"Uncle Walter" was far and away my favorite man of the 20th Century.
to my esteemed beardes(?) uncles

ALSO: well u better live up to it. i shall do my damndest to be a good nephew of course..

JMAC: yeah. that was the way it was, with Uncle walt. no bullshit.
a grand paragon, he. of an excellence that cannot be a\thing of the past. you and that ALSO give me hope that
uncles
are still available for lunatic
nephews like me.
Funny sometimes, how much icons can mean to us? Good post and happily rated. :-)
What a moving tribute. I had no idea about this connection you had to Walter Cronkite. I'm sorry you had to lose him at such a tough age.
Sigh . . . Apologies For "warped-smile-grin,
and my ill-humor (cry or giggle?) alsoknownaa

@ Art James,

it's a bit late east coast time to begin leg wrestling
but I would wager you could toss JME in a tumble
somersault him.

Tell him you lock legs on the three count
then get him on the two count

he'll giggle

This is just wonderful, evocative, sad, poignant. I'm sorry for your losses, all of them.
I really respected his work. I will never forget his report at 2:30 pm, est, 11.22.63.
Those proxy uncles and aunts and "adopted" parents who may or may not know we've adopted them somehow got us through the really awful times. A moving tribute, Jem.

the only 'celebrity' death that ever gave me a momentary twinge of regret was Isaac Asimov.......though i did have a discussion with him once.....memorable.....

Your father was showing signs of dementia at 58? That's really young. Was it early onset dementia brought on by booze? ... Cronkite was such a wonderful man and journalist. If he had a dark side, I never heard of it. ... R.
