OS came into my life in January 2009, when I was at a delicate point in my emotional health. I got ahold of some pot, got high, and as always when ‘enhanced’ , wanted to talk to my fellow human beings. Except nobody was around.
The computer was a new thing to me. I’d never been granted access to one. I punched in “ writing” and was rewarded with OS…a 4 year adventure back to sanity.
(Thank goodness I erased the first needy solicitations for ‘understanding’. Yikes. That could come back to bite me. )
(Well anything could come back to bite me, any phrase taken out of context..)
You sane people have problems with OS, I know . I do too, but I never complain….I simply cannot disrespect the Lady who brought me back from the abysmal brink into the spotlight of a lot of strangers’ loving kindness. People who dig me. Even when I get weird. And obscure..
~
So you sane people are leaving for a month, eh ?
As a protest.
I foresee dire results for OS, but wtf.
~
The other place is nice. I keep visualizing a goddamn fire in the fireplace, a warmth that makes us comfortable enough to talk as we have been blessed (yes! You naysayers!) by OS to learn to talk to one another.
~
I shan’t end this without a quote of course.
A certain ‘gouda blueberry’ suggested I look into Faust.

So, basically, fuck them. Good luck to you, though, brotha.
Our Salon is an alternative to me,and time will tell what we will be doing there.
As for you:Try to keep away from people who don't treat you right. You can definitely count on those people you find on the list today.
With Mephistopheles, you bring scary energy to this attempt to save/steal the soul of OS.
Jim,I don't want to lose Open Salon, and the idea behind this action is to SAVE it.
You,Jim,are a vital part/member of our OpenSalon community and you will be treated just the same because all your friends will be with you.
Jim the Mephisopheles comment is meant for you.
I'd love to see just exactly how you think this childish boycott will "save" OS. Or does "saving" OS only mean, to you and these other brats having a temper tantrum, trying to force it to do as YOU wish despite it not being able to do so at this time.
Joining Our Salon is a GREAT idea!
BUT...... trying to harm Open Salon is the action of puerile children who have no sense of appreciation of all that they've gained from OS FOR FREE and no understanding of the difficulties OS has.
And keep in mind that what happened to Malcolm can happen to you too.........
.

My text above got mixed up,but to call it trash is something that can come out of your mouth only.
Mind you,I am not a fool who plays around with risks.
OS is the place where I have been and want to stay, and it is a matter of clear strategy to get things straightened out.
Why are you so angry?I have not done you any harm.
To call all people who take part in this action puerile children,is getting too far.No one is trying a boycott Open Salon;to the contrary.
It is all a matter of perspective, and I am sorry you can only see the negative aspects in this action, which is your very personal opinion and does not apply to others who you address here.
Your threatening gesture is more than inappropriate.
Where do you get off at calling my comment "threatening?"!!! What threat do you perceive, in your puerile little mind, in anything I've said here?
Oh yes, I forgot, whenever any man says something, some women will label it threatening in order to get sympathy from the "women are always right" crowd.
I see much more than the "negative" aspects of this action. But I also see the spite and the lack of appreciation for the free ride we've all had on OS for years.
I'll repeat it in the hope that you'll read and understand........
OPENING A PAGE ON OUR SALON IS GREAT!!
Got that, Heidi? Anything not clear about it?
KICKING OPEN SALON WHEN IT'S DOWN IS NOT!
Anything hard to understand, Heidi?
What the frig is wrong with some of you. You can't just go to lorianne's great spot without kicking OS in the butt on your way out? And some of you real jerks even want to take a kick at me for not joining you in that totally dishonest and spiteful boycott of OS??
If you really MUST call someone nasty names, look in your mirror and start with "asshole."
.
1. OS is not a community. It's a platform. We're the community. We do not want to desert any actual people. We want them to come with us. We are all over the place begging them to come with us.
James, it wasn't a platform that welcomed you here, it was people.
2. The arrangement bloggers have with any given site is this:
They provide a viable platform, we provide viable content.
We held up our end. They did not hold up theirs. They used to, but they haven't lately. We ask for real information. We offer to help. We offer technical suggestions that wouldn't cost much to help alleviate the problems. We are left to sink or swim with an occasional reference to "we're working on it." It's analogous to being offered shelter in exchange for labor, but the landlord has let the plumbing and roof go to Hell and won't fix them, even if the tenants offer to help underwrite the repairs and provide labor. Are there debts involved here? There seems to be an implication that there are, but I'm not sure in which direction and, if there is ostensibly a debt owed the bloggers to OS, my question would be To Whom? The site is an inanimate object. The person managing the site is a newcomer who didn't actually develop anything that brought us here.
3. The primary point behind staying away from OS for a given period actually doesn't have a lot to do with OS; what it has to do with is making sure that this community gives the other site a real shot to serve as our online home, that we focus our conversations there, that we focus our posts there, that we familiarize ourselves with how that site works such that it becomes easy to us and not an excuse to go with what we know but what has stopped functioning. Both sites are available to everyone now but the result hasn't been satisfactory: We've got a bunch of people over there saying "this place works but not enough people are over here talking to us" and a bunch of people over here saying "this place is driving me stark raving nuts!" The status quo isn't working. This is a way to make it work. This is not about sinking OS. Frankly, I hope OS doesn't sink, but that's become secondary, because my community is fragmenting, and that's what I really value about OS. It's what all of us really value about OS, even those who object to what we're doing.
I don't want this to make sense but it does, and the fact that it does is not our doing.
I did not call you any names. How about leaning back in your chair and start thinking before spitting poison?
r.
It's pretty doggone clear what you think you're doing. You think you have the power to force OS to fix its problems by boycotting it for a month.
Guess what........ it won't work. Are you too foolish to understand that? If OS isn't already fixed, it's because it can't, at this time, be fixed. Do none of you realize that OS is under attack from those f**king hacker/spammers? That they are the cause of OS being all screwed up?
Oh, I forgot, you hate them spammers all to pieces - except when YOU want to watch a game or buy some cheap knock-offs......
Have you no honour? No principles? Or will you continue to try to bully OS into pandering to your wishes after YOU have had no qualms about aiding and abetting those who have attacked it?
Forget I asked..... I already know the answer .......
.
No one I know who is doing this imagines s/he can effect change here or at Salon Media Group. No one I know has that as a goal of this move.
We want a functional site and Our Salon is one, a site where we may continue reading and writing one another's work.
If people want to be able to post easily and read their favorites without technical glitches, Our Salon is such a place. There is nothing emotional about this effort. It is pragmatic. Period.
Lezlie
If that was your intention, you'd not have called for anyone to boycott OS for a month. Nor would anyone be saying that they are only doing this to "save" OS.
I note that not one of you has explained just how this action is intended to "save" OS.
Your lies are as transparent as those politicians tell.
.
Heidi! I don’t think it was threatening, but then I dunno. As I said. Gosh. Causing calumnious controversial shit without even trying, me. An apt metaphor for my life.
Art! Kim doan needs what they call a ‘platform”.
Poor dear woman.
As for you, Arthur, I can only say, keep at it. No matter what weirdness comes yr way.
We took this on, as troubadours, did we not?
It aint all about Complementing the Lady..
No no..
It is about venal acts of treachery which shall be avenged.
It is about men with swords.
And shields.
Roaming the post roman landscape with ideas of a better future?
I agree :” OS is the place where I have been and want to stay, and it is a matter of clear strategy to get things straightened out.”
I have little faith in this revolutionary action but that is cuz..i simply don’t think they CARE enough…
~
HEIDI! Hah evil dwarf? For heavens sake you can get snarky! Cool!
~ps Heidi I know. I am much more faustian than devilish. But at this late date, a well educated man can play both parts, alas…
Yup. That's me. Called an evil dwarf by someone who, in the same breath says that she didn't call me any names.
She hasn't listened to a thing I've said. Just wants me to jump in and "be like all the good little follower sheeple" or I'm bad, bad, bad. She's been a "favourite friend" of mine for some time.
And there's good ol' Jonathan, another "favourite friend" of mine. Completely ready to misrepresent what a number of those have said, here and other places, who made it very clear that this action is intended, in part, to make OS fix the problems it has.
Inviting people to go to Our Salon is perfectly reasonable - as I've said and repeated a number of times - but deliberately trying to "discipline" OS by asking others to, "not to post on OS nor comment on any OS blog, is dishonourable.
Oh, and Kosh, Heidi, and Jonathan ought to check out when I joined lorianne's Our Salon. I've been a member there since its inception. I posted a link to that site prominently at the TOP of a couple of blogs of mine and in a couple of dozen comments on other folks blogs. I have ALWAYS encouraged folks to join Our Salon. That I might have some personal misgivings about how it will be run is beside the point.
.
I just cannot load photos anymore here, or continue to risk losing what I write -- as much as I'd like it to stay the same here, the tone hasn't stayed the same, anyway .
I didn't join the "month" thing as I know myself (and I stopped writing here 6 months ago) -- but I do like the freedom to change my mind at will and tend to rebel against timelines and deadlines, much to my own detriment, sometimes...maybe you understand this quality.
Regardless, I have now changed my bio here on OS.
It states that I have left OS due to technical difficulties and am now over at oursalon.ning. com, basically.
I figure anyone who finds my page (as many 'outsiders' do every week, somehow) can still find me and also find OurSalon that way.
Stay or go, it's not a requirement to me, not an encouragement from me, that way.
I just like it when a site actually works.
" In the wee wee hours I sit alone and think of you,
in the wee wee hours I sit alone and wonder if you think of all the things we used to do.
one little song for a fading memory
of the one I really love
the only one for me "
See you around nephew.....
I do not wish OS ill.
I absolutely hope OS will overcome the technical problems it is having-
but I'm also concerned about the "Great Spam Wars"
I would suggest that in order to keep its membership
and serve the membership that has drawn the "Spammers"
That OS CLOSE the membership for a while.
Thia would discourage the spammers,
and allow a SERIOUS weeding out of those who view OS as a "marketplace" for junk
I understand that OS makes its money by "Selling Eyeballs"
I'm fine with that
But it makes no sense to allow freeloaders to sell in the feed
and dominate others writings and community
with commercial nonsense.
I'll be hanging around, but not posting.
OS needs to sort out the community from the scavenger pack
I suggest closing membership while people go "inactive"
and cleansing the roll of itinerant marketeers.
Amen!! And pass the gravy!! I HUNGRY!!! :D

I see the one side, I see the Sky Side, I don't see the Salon.Media side though, keeping quiet for as long as they've been, the Cover being stale, it doesn't help the mood.
I've been told by some folks that IT(one person with a knife!) is working on replacing servers and making out with their sisters.
Today, so far, the Open seems to be working better, really fast. No errors so far. I don't know what to think but it's always good to have back ups and such for blogging.
I have an account on Our Salon for awhile now, Zoomers too, Word Press, and Hubpages. ~shrug~
Those doing the boycott, power to you!! Free porn posts for me, cause well, those get me huge Adsense revenues!! :D
The fact that everybody making this move did so only reluctantly, and after months of forethought, should speak volumes.
A little leverage never hurt anyone, as in the Abolition movement, the Porters Union Movement, even our Women's Suffrage Movement. This situation may be small by comparison, although the same principles would apply. Let's be frank here. Some of us were half apt to believe that our leveraging power, as a group, might get the desired result, as in, OS fully operational or even more open with us about what is really going on.
To leave the site to the spammers seems Sky's view of what we are about to do. He seems half crazy with worry that, if there's nobody to hold down the fort, spam will become the only content here.
The fact of the matter is, there are so few rates given anymore for each post, it takes only one rate or comment to put a spammer's post in the 4 Hour Feed, etc.
We are not simply blaming OS for its every malfunction. We love it, too, but feel disrespected by its ownership that has not spared us one thought in recent months beyond, "Bear with me."
For two years straight, I've watched this place deteriorate. Not even once did it improve beyond minor steps that failed.
It seems to me, Salon Media Group is letting all of us down by not giving us any updates or help.
Sky feels downed by us, obviously, downed as if by mutiny. We are neither mutiny oriented nor particularly aiming to hurt OS.
If anything, these are desperate measures, not merely a dig for vengeful reasons., etc. I love it here, as do Kosh, Jon, Heidi, and many many others following through with our objective Monday.
It's the malfunctioning portion of things here, along with the lack of cooperative help, which we object to, not OS as a platform.
Any community is a gathering of human beings whose lives intertwine. It has less to do with place than with intention.
At Our Salon, there is peace. People are less stressed. We fear less often work could be lost, work which has often taken months, or even years, to put together. We don't have a page load problem there. Our comments post with ease. Certain features exist there like no-where else we've found thus far.
I stayed here, and intend fully to keep my blog open here because I am still (confoundedly) hopeful of an improvement to services. But if I can't even get in to look at my PMs, much less comment freely due to load issues, and nothing essential has been done to further my position here, why would I bother focussing all of my time on this place?
Too many people have left our number for better accommodations elsewhere. They may be wiser than we. For the most part, I can see Lorianne's every effort as having paid off, as readership is up (not down, as it is here) and there are few worries at OurS.
Lorianne is even listening to us, getting our feedback, and then customizing the site according to what will work best for everyone. Can OS staff say as much? Can they even keep up with that influx of spam which destroys the chances of being read here?
Our annoyance isn't what guided us, Sky. We genuinely loved OS for a long while, and were willing to stick it out, like a bad marriage, in order to try and cement a new bond, as it were.
That being said, this was a platform that worked once. And it was a fine way to go. I used to enjoy it immensely. Now I feel as if I'm watching the slow sinking of the Titanic. When will it go belly up? It could already be floating in the North Atlantic, for all we know.
I'm not confident OSTitanic isn't being dismantled and re-made into a speedy, dynamic ship with good crew, but the opposite seems already to have come about.
I am not interested in arguing about it in any case, and so now will bid you adieu.
Jem: Thank you for the chance to rethink this whole deal and to talk it over with freedom.

MalcolmXY - so.. because he says it it must be true? and to suggest that what happened to malcolmxy can happen to others as some sort of scare tactic?
Lets set the record straight. MalcolmXY and i had brief conversations via message here about the what ifs of Open Salon disappearing. I think we both agreed that there were other options out there available. I showed him the site I have owned for many years under a different name that is now Our Salon and suggested it would work well as a parking lot in order to allow the community to stay together. I think he agreed with me. That was it. I didnt actually open it to folks until many months later. If that means i 'stole his idea' then yup.. i did.
And just because he claims to have been booted... that is a complete untruth. He is still a member . In fact i had several requests to boot him and did not because there was no cause.
and i can in fact produce the evidence of his still being a member if necessary AND the messages where we discussed what to do if Open goes belly up.
I resent the hell out of having my integrity questioned in this manner, but not surprised. i mean hey... he said he was so why bother with facts when you can just run with that statement?
How does one "leave" a web site? All this talk of leaving or staying blows my mind. We come here to open, and can't get in-- so what? What's new? Pretty used to it by now. Nothing if not consistent, those wacky Jakes and Joans. Where has Joan been lately.. like the last three years? She commented on my blog once.. saw her on TV the next day, and wondered if she saw me there, too, watching her.
But, leave? It's like quitting smoking. As someone once said, and I often repeated-- I quit every night, and start again the next day.
Unless I don't. I've quit before.. for long periods. Damned tobacco.
Then there's weed... never quit that one, except for when sleeping.. HA
So, Lorianne "stole the idea" from Malcolmfett? Is that it.. my god.
Let me just blather on for a while longer here Jim. I go "there" and I come here, when possible. Got huge smiles last night from Arthur Louis. He's a good sport, get's on everyone nerves on purpose. Benghazigate my eye Arthur.
I'll always check on opensalon, every day for the rest of m. . . it's life! It's a BORG and I'm part of the collective. Like a death star borg here lately though, or passing thorugh a black hole borg collective. We are like hive beings. See ya here or there.. and there does WORK, that's what is so refreshing ain't it. Damn Lorianne, booting Malcolm... seems kinda hateful don't it. She has her days I can tell you!
thinking of Ann Nichols' last piece here ... and wanting someone to read to me ... Goodnight Moon ...
;-)
As for skypisseo -"And some of you real jerks even want to take a kick at me for not joining you in that totally dishonest and spiteful boycott of OS??"
I don't think that's the reason some people "want to take a kick at you."
MARGARET: my skills at playing both sides against the middle are legendary. The motive as you say is to keep looking good (thanks for the support on my hair) and never stop being loved. It is pathological , I admit, but it is my thing.
KIM and ANN: delighted to see some, uh, erotic heat
Mephistopheles is not your name
I know what you're up to just the same, though (*wink*)
Who knows why the assholes here have seen fit to boot me 4 times and erase my pages each time they did it.
Well, I know why they did it one of the times...the last time it happened, it happened because I ushered it to happen. I finally really went off on all the assholes who deserved going off on.
I figured, if I gotta do the time, I might as well get the pleasure of doin' the crime, know what I'm sayin'?
I’m not boycotting OS. I’m leaving a site that no longer cares if we exist.
At first, the way of your love

I thought I’d reach

After taking a few steps
I found
the way is an Ocean.

I'm in a couple of other places, but this is my home. The errors, the crashing, the awfully irritating waiting for this or that, well, some families are like that.
@ Thoth, leaving a msg for u here as anything goes on OS, been truly "ours" far as I can tell, (some of us unconventional ppl hve been happy here, made lotsa good friends, right Emmerling?) came in to read ur post, tried posting a comment, it flew away, wd repost whn I can find it, liked ur new style and I "vote" for you.
OK, for those who either don't get the reasoning or think it has something to do with taking a shot at OS (1. it doesn't 2. a shot at WHOM? The platform is inanimate, I see no point in being considerate to Jake, and we're inviting the writers to come with us, but Skypixieo hasn't bothered to tell us who the Hell he thinks we're actually hurting), this is why:
Both sites are open now. Loads of people have accounts in both places. What's the result? More activity over here than there, way more frustration over here than there. Why, if people are so frustrated here, don't they move or haven't they moved already? Because their friends spend more time here and they want the community, even at the cost of the frustrations involved. So, everyone remains frustrated but people are afraid to move because they don't want to be without their friends. What's the answer? Move as a block, so your friends stay with you. If we don't commit to spend some time strictly over there, that won't happen. If it would, it would have happened already, but it hasn't. Well, it's started to, but only because we organized it to.
I was once involved in moving a chatroom community from one room with technical problems to another without. The issues were the same - people would go over to the less frustrating room for a little while but come back because there weren't enough people over there. If we don't address that problem, then the people on the site that works will be frustrated by the lack of activity and the people on the site that doesn't will be frustrated by the fact that their site doesn't work. So we say: We agree to stay in the one that works for a while. Once that happens, everything seeks its own level. We aren't Grover Nordquist: If people decide down the line to make other plans, they're going to make other plans, and that's it. No one can control that. If someone comes back in three weeks who committed to four, what exactly do you think is going to happen to that individual? You think he or she will be ostracized?
This isn't Revenge Of The Ignored. It's a solution that addresses the inherent difficulties of the problem.
And please stop thinking about OS like it has feelings or something. OS is a platform, an administrator, and us. Who made you feel welcome here? Jake? He wasn't here yet. Chances are that a lot of the people who made you feel welcome here are moving.
Everyone involved will do what they want. I don't think any of us will be angry with someone for electing to stay. Being angry with someone for telling us this is all about our malevolence, not to mention our dishonesty, is something else altogether.
Because that's 100% pure unadulterated bullshit.
For my own libby reasons I will not be migrating. In quick sum, I have not been technologically tasered as deeply as I was socially tasered in my history at open salon.
So I will endure the frustration and adjust myself and see what happens and I am sure will still have a taste of social tasering now and then maybe even from saying this honest comment, though I doubt or at least hope anything as intense as that one profound period of experience will be repeated.
I guess I am opting for neglect and indifference from the enigmatic open salon overlord entity rather than any more chances of potential peer group malice that was such a profound and troubling and confounding experience. I am glad I stayed on at open salon, but that does not minimize that period's impact on my spirit and my capacity to trust. I also recognize and acknowledge at least some of my own flaws in that scenario. Still, I honor and appreciate my own sense of self-protectiveness and following my own social intuition which we all must do in this choice-making.
I will miss the support, genius and honesty (sometimes tough love) of many of those who won't be posting and commenting at open salon in the next month or maybe are gone permanently. So many gave enormously of their talent and their generosity and comfort.
So it goes. "Vaya con dios" to all of us as citizens of a very special family.
James E! leave it to you to provide a post and thread for us to emotionally sort out our positions. your good-heartedness is profoundly noble and reveals your long-time leadership on this site as well as citizenship. You are always both full-throttle student and teacher and I have appreciated that.
best, libby

-to James in terms of domestic disturbance
-to me attacking me from ambush
-to all children,assaulting their dignity
-to all members of OS who have decided to participate in this action
of clarification.
You have taken advantage of free access to James' blog post.
In order for you to relieve yourself of your infested thoughts, you felt entitled to leave your dirt at somebody elses place. What you have done to me is in my eyes an open diffamation, and the way you speak of other people here is a sign of immaturity.
To mention Afghanistan in the context of OS-transit is solid proof of your misconcept of facts.
For a brief moment,I thought about sending you this as pm,but I decided to leave the comment here at James' post because that's the place which you in your attitude of "war-declaration" have infested.
i am , frankly, humbled that people have come here to
intelligently work out our issues.
~
this is how i see it.
os is like living in some kind of theistic nightmare universe
where God is distant and never intervenes on our behalf.
(a metaphor for our rather uninterested Editorial Staff).

Our Salon is a warm humanistic utopian alternative.
~
@dear rolling, glad you are back. missed u.
@ heidi , you have hilariously dealt with cranky old sky. ha, a defaming dwarf of a man.
@sky , i rely on your expertise and hope to whatever god i pray to today that this is so:"If OS isn't already fixed, it's because it can't, at this time, be fixed. Do none of you realize that OS is under attack from those f**king hacker/spammers? That they are the cause of OS being all screwed up? "
@kosh, i agree , but see above, my brilliant analogy of os as a transcendantly ruled universe. Of course it was you nutballs that make me feel welcome. But the miracle of my late in life literary output was due to 4 years of OS. I feel loyalty to my "platform". This is not anywhere near what i feel for the people, of course. And people of both sides are having conscientous differences regarding the platform they choose to use. I am never a joiner of anything. I despise abstract causes. I love the people. and the awful truth is that some that i love are staying here, some going there, and i am in a quagmire of indecision about what my ''position'' should be. Naive , i know.
@malcolm, going off on assholes is part of our os fun.
os aint a place for delicate constitutions.
you are always fun to read. i would miss you if you
decided to go away.
OS is almost back to normal, and I see that you are here.
Since you are always hiding,I have to put this statement here. It's almost 4 weeks old and you know it as I have tried to send it to you in a pm.
To attack members and then go into the hiding position is cowardly behaviour.
