matzo ball soup and movies

mm-mmm good!
i think mine will look like this, but i need celery.

got a whole chicken boiling.  it was a roaster, and i am of the mind that one should roast a chicken and have dinner, and then use the leftovers for soup.  but the truth is, i dont like roast chicken dinner.  i like stuffing and mashed potatoes and rolls and creamed corn and gravy. but not the roast chicken.  so i cut this thing up, which is absolutely one of the grossest things i have ever done, and anyone who loved me would never ever want to put me through it again, cause i was almost barfing.  you got the slippery stretchy skin, and then UNDER that you got that snot layer like you have in a raw egg, covering the whole thing!  oh i am gagging just thinking about it.

so i cut it up and took off a lot of the skin and threw it in water and added some poultry seasoning (cause it would have that flavor if i roasted it first, right?) and some salt and pepper.  then i cut up two big onions and halved them.  then i threw in ten baby carrots - need big ones, but dont have them, and so i figure ten i can just pick out when they start to get too soft.

then it still didnt smell yummy, so i threw in some adobo and a boullion cube.

and its boiling.  needs to boil a long time because i accidentally left it in the sink overnight, so i gotta boil boil boil to get rid of the sam'n'ella.

and i have a nice box of manischewitz matzo ball mix.  probably need another one.  but one will suffice for today.  i will let it all boil up and down and add the matzo balls and separately make tiny pasta shells to add to the bowls when it is all done.  now, if we just had some cilantro, which i know doesnt go, but, its so good.

i am trying to copy a soup i had 25 years ago, many times, at a restaurant called oliver's in ithaca.  nobody remembers it, though i wish they did, because i would love to talk about this soup with someone!

and after the soup, we will go to the movies, even though supposedly the time of High Swine is upon us.  i want to see capitalism, and the toy story double feature, and whip it, and even, kindof, zombieland, bc woody harrelson looks so damn funny in it.  i know its too gory for me, so its not really in the running much. and we cant see the double feature tonight bc i will never last through it.  so.

at the movies i will tell keith to PLEASE NEVER EVER let me come back again because i loathe myself so much when i pay the prices at the mainstream theaters (we have a couple cheaper ones around here, and they dont incite me at all).  and he will agree.  but then, inevitably, we will return, and i will be reminded of all that is wrong in this country.

and then we will come home, and i will fall asleep on the couch, till keith goes to bed, when he will rouse me, and i will follow him in.  tonight i will surely brush before falling asleep, bc the popcorn is such a challenge for those of us with tight contacts. speaking of which, did anyone see that madonna still has lead fillings?  what explanation can there be for that?

she was on the adulterer's the other night, and she looked a million times better than she has looked in recent years.  i know it's a facelift, but whoever did it deserves a bonus, because it doesnt look all tight and over-cheeked and madame-y.

OR we might skip the movies tonight and go see the double feature in the morning.   plus that way, it will be less crowded and fewer residual germs - speaking of which - what IS the answer to how long the flu germs last outside the body?

anyone?

bueller?

Bueller? Bwaha! I've never had a matzo ball in my life. Are they good? I want to see that love story, too! I may need to find a bootleg copy or take out a loan. I can't afford any movies, though I used to love to go.
hi michael! where we live - let me correct that - a good near hour from where we live (but here, half an hour away doesnt even count as driving, so...) there is a theater that plays newish movies for TWO BUCKS. i dont even know how they stay in business. like say the movie was out two months ago - now they have it, for two bucks! the hour drive is quite an obstacle, and youhave to get good gas mileage to even think about it being worth it....

if i can get my leg on a bootleg copy (i have a niece who can get copies that include the heads of people in the audience. or i should say she HAS gotten them).

matzo balls are really good, and you can totally cheat and get a box or can of broth, an onion, a carrot, and a box of mix and boom that counts as official matzo ball soup. a box would make a couple meals worth of matzos. its like a dumpling, but different.
ha, i just realized i said if i can get a leg on a bootleg copy. i meant a hand.
I read robins post last week and got all myself all jewy and made a big pot of chicken soup with the matzo balls. it was REALLY super good first and second time. it was a BIG pot. I never make small.

so believe it or not I have some of it STILL remaining in the deepest end of the frig, cold and gelatinous and waiting to be reheated. I don't know if I can eat any more because I'm kind of tired of it. but by god, I will not throw it out! I have rules in these tough times. my husband never eats leftovers. you REALLY have to doctor them and then lie.

matzo balls taste like rough hewn dumplings with this nice almost spicy, "come eat me" back taste. good mouth feel but they have to be light. if they're dense you might as well dig into a boiled softball.

we have a cheap theater too. we like them. I applied for a part time job there but they looked at me and almost laughed in my face. it's all kids working there. it didn't help that I filled out the application in the dark during a movie with only my lumpy pocketbook to lean on and it looked like a mental patient had a therapeutic spasm instead of someone in need of a job. I'm such a lazy doofus and I couldn't wait to get it home, fill it out and then bring it back.
The Matzo balls, they soooo biggggg!!! :)

Sorry, childhood rememberance of a friend's grandmother!! :)
can you believe i've never had matzp ball soup. gonna try it soon though. i saw bobby flay make it on throwdown and i think i'll give it a try.
I'm sad to admit that I've never had matzo ball soup. I'm not even sure what is in a matzo ball....looks like good stuff though!
hi monkey - i forgot all about robin's post, and have just been craving matzo ball soup really bad! and then when i looked up the restaurant online as i was writing this, i found my comment to her comment, and realized she had planted the seed!
now, your soup should freeze quite nicely, you know. i think manischewitz makes the lightest matzo balls, their mix i mean. and i thought the box was expensive (three bucks!) till i realized it is enough to make two batches.
and patience. you know you have no patience when your twelve year old says to you - have you NO patience?

tink - hi glad you are still among us, and that your matzo balls are better!

capn, try them. they really are yummy in a nice chicken broth.

and rice - time to try 'em! picture a dumpling with a bit more meaty texture. :-)
jane, I never could leave you or this place, it's inside of me.

Wait, what?

;)
