Chess : Trading Down

Rate: 0 Flag

Zhaoqin Peng - Annemarie Volkers, Dutch Women's Championship 2011, Queen's Gambit Declined (D07)

After 20. ... Nc5

After 20. ... Nxc5 the queenless midgame is winding down and White is a pawn up with good shape.

White wants to trade down pieces into an endgame. But what kind of endgame?

White can have a R+N+B+P ending by playing 21. Bxc5 which looks "okay".

But Peng wants no nasty light-square bishops around to complicate matters e.g., making a move on the queenside which incidentally lights up the Ne2 with tempo.

Besides, White's light-square bishop is more of a liability than an asset. Its whole usefulness at this point is that by attacking the Black rook it can trade itself for Black's light-square bishop.

So White attacks the rook and by threats of winning a piece forces Black to trade two minor pieces instead of one, at the same time connecting White's queenside pawns.

21. Bb5 Rb6 22. Bc4 Ba4 23. Bxc5 Rc6 24. Bb3 Bxb3 25. axb3 Rxc5

  After 25. ... Rc5

Now White's rooks are supremely active. White now wins another pawn and trades a pair of rooks by force.

26. Rxa7 Rd8 27. Rea1 Kf8 28. Ra8 Ke7 29. Rxd8 Kxd8 30. Kf2 Kd7 31. Ke3

  After 31. Ke3

Peng goes on to win White's lovely position for a 6-0 in the champeenship.
