A Hard Day's Blog

Oh, by all means, I'd be quite prepared for that eventuality.

Nashville Tea Party

Rate: 5 Flag

Although I did not attend the Nashville tea party tax protest, my husband was there with his camera to record the event for, um, posterity.

He estimates the attendance at a thousand-ish.  Speakers at the event included Republican State Representative Marsha Blackburn and conservative radio talk-show hosts Phil Valentine and Steve Gill.

At one point during the rally, two young African-American women wearing Obama T-shirts began shouting "Obama! Obama! Obama!", and a young African-American man challenged the (overwhelmingly white) crowd to give back their Social Security checks and Medicare benefits, etc., if they were so opposed to "socialism".  That took a lot of guts.

Posted below are some photos from the event.  All images are the sole property of Jim DeMain.

A tight shot of the crowd.  The sign with "TEA" on it really jumps out at me, as this is the acronym for the organization that employs me.  (Although we had nothing to do with the demonstration.)

Yo, comrades!

I think slackerism gets a bad rap, don't you?

This guy had a lot to say on a variety of issues.

This woman went for brevity.  I like that.

I'm not sure if he's dreading the prospect, or excited about it.

One sign just wasn't enough.

Wow. These are brilliant and brave photos! Do they realize that they're keeping the rest of us worked up? Now, I'm really pissed.

Thanks for showing us Nashville's Tea party.
Racist ass wipes. I say that because I used to live there. You know that's it. Plus, stupid. I wager the majority of them are about to get a tax cut for the first time in eight years. They are so stupid.
Thank you, zumalicious, for your reporting as well in Sacramento.

odette, there were even some people there who dug out their old "Ax the Tax" signs, the ones that were printed when the state legislature was considering an income tax. It must have felt like old times.
Wow. You're right - yelling in that crowd took guts. And they made a very good point. I'd love to know how much "entitlement" everybody who's protesting is getting. Of course, they don't see it that way. e.g., one of the biggest entitlements in this country (as far as lost tax revenue) is....the tax deduction for mortgage interest. And who turns that down?
Yes, Silkstone. I think it would be an interesting experiment if all government was shut down for about a month, and all "entitlements" were canceled. Give the people what they want!
I swear.....I will ask again....where were these people for the last eight years? Ridiculous!!
why does it seem so amusing to me? great photographs. It must have been nice for the attendees to be able to say things not accepted in polite society cause none of them ever get an invite to polite society, or pretty much any society
