Oh, by all means, I'd be quite prepared for that eventuality.

Trent Reznor: The Cleveland Years

Rate: 7 Flag

I just found out today, reading a blog by 1 Irritated Mother, that longtime OSer Jodi Kasten has quite a thing for Trent Reznor.

Jodi, you probably know that Trent spent more than a few years in Cleveland before hitting it big, although I don't know if you've ever seen any video of the bands he played in.  I'm sure it's all there in Wikipedia, but I was there and I saw it with my own eyes!

Here's a marvelous little clip from a local show, with Trent playing keyboards (and looking rather mortified) with a band called Slam Bamboo. Ah, the bolo ties, the Simmons drums, the Steinberger bass, the mullets! God, how I miss the 80's.

I don't think he lasted too long in that one.

And then there was Exotic Birds.  A bit more artsy, more conceptual. Oooh, computers help us make music!  (And soon they will take over our lives!)

Many a Friday or Saturday night in the mid-to-late 80's was spent at the Phantasy on Detroit Road dancing to the synth-tastic sounds.

Did I know Trent personally?  Not more than to say hello to, really.  But I see, after digging out my (mint condition) copy of the 1986 EP (this is a form of vinyl, for all you youngsters out there) L'oiseau by Exotic Birds, that it was actually  co-engineered by my then boyfriend, now husband.  I guess I had completely forgotten about this.  I'll have to ask him if he has any particular memories of those sessions.

It wasn't very long before word got around that Trent was working on something new.  I remember hearing parts of what would become Pretty Hate Machine on a cassette tape that was making the rounds.  (Sure wish I still had that!)  Jim and I got married and moved to Nashville shortly after that, but for Trent Reznor, the rest, as they say, is history.

This is the same guy that sings "Closer?" I guess there's cool in there somewhere!
and Jodi goes :: thud ::
Wow.
That officially makes you the coolest person that I could actually directly communicate with.

Ha!

The Man & I enjoyed this thoroughly. Down here in Florida, in the goth scene, there are boatloads of people who claim to have some tie to Trent in some way. But, I have to say, yours is the least pretentious and most fun I've ever heard!

THANK YOU!!!

(thumbified for general awesomeness)
oh, btw, this is a great post.
HAhahahaha. Oh- thank you for sharing this. I'm a big NIN fan as well- from the Pretty Hate Machine days. I've never seen this footage. Hilarious.
Just do not ask me about the hairdo on the lead singer of that first band. I have no f#*%ing idea what that was all about.

We were actually better friends with the guy who engineered in the studio and did live sound for NIN. When they came to Nashville some time in the 90's, he got us into the show, and we got to hang out with him at the mixing board.
BFF STEALER!!!

You just can't trust anyone these days ~

;0 ~ lol
Lisa - They all had to start somewhere!

Thanks bbd.

Jodi - I'm glad you got a kick out of this. I find that the most pretentious people are the ones who are often lying through their teeth.

JustJuli - I'm glad you'd never seen it before. I figured that, since it was on YouTube, it was common knowledge. I wonder if Trent is at all embarrassed by it. I hope not, because it was all a lot of fun while it was happening.

Irritated Mother - I promise I'll never do it again!
Whoa. That first video.Egad. Sometimes I think the 80's were a scary mistake we should have just slept through. Slam Bamboo indeed.
Beth, embrace your inner Pat Benatar. The 80's were awesome! :-)
