Oh, by all means, I'd be quite prepared for that eventuality.

Friday On My Mind

Rate: 2 Flag

Growing up in Cleveland in the 70's, radio station WMMS ("The Home of the Buzzard"), 100.7 on the FM dial, was a big part of our lives.  It was what was known as a "progressive" radio station, one that played AOR, or "album-oriented rock".  Put simply, if you listened to 'MMS, you were cool.  The older kids listened to it, so those of just starting our teen years tried to emulate them.  After a childhood diet of top 40 and bubblegum pop, it was hard to get used to the "heavier" music from what were then obscure artists and even more obscure album cuts, but it was a necessary part of fitting in with the "in crowd".

One of my prized possessions in high school was a T-Shirt with the buzzard logo on it.  I remember wearing it on our senior class trip to New York City.  (We Clevelanders, often the brunt of so many jokes, took a fierce pride in our beleageured city.)

DJ Kid Leo had the afternoon "drive time" shift every day, and every Friday at 6:00 p.m., the official start of the weekend, he would play the same two songs.  First was Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run".  Cleveland was a big Springsteen town back then (still is), and even today, hearing those opening chords immediately takes me back to that Friday-night feeling, the anticipation of those two days where anything was possible.

The next song, being a bit more "pop", wasn't typical 'MMS fare, but it was the quintessential start to the weekend.  It's the perfect summing up of the joy the working person experiences on Friday.  Here's "Friday On My Mind" by the EasyBeats.

Have a good weekend, everyone!
