Oh, by all means, I'd be quite prepared for that eventuality.

Guit With It!

Rate: 10 Flag

I heard a song by Junior Brown on the radio the other day, and it made me want to go ahead and pull out my 0ld copy of Guit With It, the album he recorded way back in 1993.  I had almost forgotten what a formidable talent he is, and what a truly original artist.

With his "hip-but-square" appearance, his deep, smooth baritone voice with just the right amount of twang and vibrato, his wicked sense of humor and his ability to blend a wide variety of musical styles, it's a shame that he remains on the fringes of both country and pop music.

Guit With It runs the gamut from pure country ("Doin' What Comes Easy to a Fool") to Western Swing ("Sugarfoot Rag") to real blues ("Guit-Steel Blues"), and ends with a charming acoustic love song to his wife, "The Gal From Oklahoma", which sounds like it might have been recorded on his front porch.

You might be asking yourself what he's holding in the picture above.  It's an instrument of his own invention, called a "guit-steel".  (He says that the idea for it came to him in a dream.)  As you can see, on the top is is an electric six-string guitar, and on the bottom is a lap steel guitar.  I was lucky enough to get to see him play live once, and watching him work that thing was a real experience.

In addition to playing some of the most straight-ahead traditional country you'd ever want to hear, Brown also has a number of what you might call humorous songs, including one of my all-time favorites, "Highway Patrol".

And here's a live version of "My Wife Thinks You're Dead".  If he ever had a "hit" song, this one is probably it.  As always, he is accompanied on acoustic guitar by his wife, Tanya Rae, in her sensible pumps and prim Sunday-go-to-meetin' suit.

He usually reserves a spot on his records and in his live shows for some incredible instrumental work, including surf and even some Jimi Hendrix riffs.  He plays like a man possessed.

Hmmm....Have we been spending TOO much time in Nashville surrounded by hicks and rednecks?

You're losing your alternative credibility here, dear! LOL J/K
Dude, Junior is about as "alternative" as they come!
well THAT is awesome. who knew? jimi would surely agree.
I thought he looked like Billy Joel from the picture but he certainly has a different sound!
Thanks for introducing him to me--loved his music.
Kat, I'm glad you liked it!

Karin, now that you mention it, he does sort of look like Billy Joel in that photo. I think it's a relatively recent one. He looks like he's lost some weight and the facial hair is new. I'm glad you enjoyed his music.
I don't care what people say...these vids and the music were enjoyable!

Thank you and Rated!
I've popped "Guit With It" into the dash every summer now for 15+ years as we head to a favorite fly fishing spot in the high desert. I especially like it in hot weather with an 18-wheeler next to me pushing up the long hills.
He is great. I bet thats why he is'nt promoted by the media moguls, or should i say music Mongrels.
Tom, Willie, Andy, aka and handymn, you all have excellent taste in music. :-)
poorsinner, don't be shocked! We liberals know cool music! :-)
no doubt, Junior is a great one. Funny enough, "Guit With It" is one of the few Junior CD's I don't have. I saw him live recently, and: 1) his wife was not in the band - a friend said he thought they were splitting up; 2) I'm fairly certain ol' Junior had a couple of pops before the show, and 3) he still kicked ass.
Well, Tom, you better go out and guit it!

It's nice to see you again. I hope things are going well for you.

And if Junior and Tanya Rae are splitting up, I'm real sorry to hear that. But, I guess it happens.
That's some great pickin. I've heard of him but not seen him play before--thanks for those clips.
