A Hard Day's Blog

Oh, by all means, I'd be quite prepared for that eventuality.

No One Rocked A Mini Dress & Cowboy Boots Like Carlene

Rate: 18 Flag

Carlene Carter was really something back when I first moved to Nashville.  The daughter of June Carter (granddaughter of Mother Maybelle) and Carl Smith, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, she's definitely country music royalty. Plus, she was married to Nick Lowe, so she has some serious power pop mojo as well. She lost her way for awhile, lots of drug problems (boyfriend Howie Epstein, who appears in the video below, died of an overdose), but she's still making music. The video below is the title track from her 1990 record, I Fell In Love

And this is a live version of "Every Little Thing", from 1993's Little Love Letters.
Rock on, Carlene!

What's she up to these days? Any new YouTube to add? Just curious.
aka, she released a CD in 2008, called "Stronger". You probably wouldn't recognize her if you saw her. She was an adorable little pixie back then, and now she looks like a woman who's lived kind of a hard life. She's suffered a lot of losses. I'll think about adding a more recent video!
adorable pixies in short leg-covering and boots
and having mellifluous voices and
angelic personalities are
my only weakness.
especially when they hit hard times..
i am a, ha, healer, sort of...

thanks alot...:(
I see what you mean. Found it.
Don't do it on my account. Didn't mean to change your posting any.
I knew little about Carlene before coming across this post; now I'm a fan. Thanks, Jeanette, for some kick-ass country on a Saturday night.

(is it OK to refer to country as kick-ass? it's usually a term reserved for rock but certain styles of country qualify too in my book)
James, I think you may have your work cut out for you with Ms. Carter!

aka, yeah, see what I mean? She doesn't look like the same person at all. Which isn't necessarily a tragedy, lots of people change. But I think drugs can really change a person in a harsh way.

nanatehay, some country is absolutely kick-ass! Glad you enjoyed the videos. She was just so damn cute!
I was a HUGE fan of Roseanne cash, now I have another to become a fan of.

Rated D
She sings good too,

Hot Dang! I'm thinking about saddling up my palmetto bug and moseying on over to yer neck of the woods just so I can meet Carlene. I can't help it I got a little bit of country in me.

Thank you Jeanette DeMain!
What stage presence, voice, personality, eyes... legs!
Totally impressed and.. kind of... in love!
Forget the mini dress and cowboy boots! Look at her with that jumbo Gibson J-200 dreadnought with engraved flower pickguard and moustache bridge! That is so hot.
Dianne, Roseanne Cash was another great member of that family. Although her style was a little less flamboyant than step-sister Carlene's, I was also a big fan.

Trudge, she did have a nice voice. And if there are palmetto bugs in Florida big enough to "saddle up", I'm never coming there again! (I think everyone has a little bit of country in them - most people just won't admit it.)

trig, yeah, I think I was a little bit in love with her too.

greenheron, you are obviously a woman who knows her guitars. I had no idea (and I also had no idea what that guitar was). Thanks for educating me!
Terrific stuff, and yes, she can certainly rock a mini skirt and boots!
Those Carter-Cash girls got it going on. As a life long rocker, I've always found some rock and roll roots in the kind of music that these girls play. Hell look at the bloodlines, how could they miss? What the hell happened to John Carter?
Whew. When I saw her described in the past tense I was afraid she'd died. Carter could do it all, and for a while there it looked like she would. For my money back then, the union of Nick Lowe and Carlene Carter was a musical match the equal of Johnny Cash & June Carter. The clip from '93 shows what she was capable of, as do her first couple of albums. But she got lost, and for a long time. I hope she continues to find her way home.
Procopius, I only wish I could do it as well!

Bob, country and rock are two sides of the same coin, as far as I'm concerned. They've gone steady, broken up, married and divorced many times. John Carter Cash is very active as a musician and producer in his own right, as well as keeping the family legacy alive. His website is here.

Jeremiah, sorry if I scared you. From what I've read, she's pretty well grounded now, and seems to be happily married. My husband just mentioned that he has met her and done some mastering work for her. I had no idea!
She does kick some butt in these vids! Thanks for a treat!
thanks for this, jeanette. i tried to log on last night when i first read it, but i must have made the OS gods mad yesterday - no no no no, they said. i didn't know her, but she indeed rocked it in these videos. funny, carlene was my mother's middle name, the one she went by as a girl, and much prettier than the name she went by when i knew her. i don't know that i've ever seen it attached to a real person except this singer and her.
Dicky, you're welcome!

Candace, glad to introduce you to another Carlene. I've always liked the female versions of male names (Carlene, Earlene, Pauline, Henrietta, Georgette, etc.) I guess my own name falls into that category as well.
I didn't know about her. Thanks, Jeanette!
Interesting info. Fine links. Thank you!!
