A Hard Day's Blog

Oh, by all means, I'd be quite prepared for that eventuality.

Marcel's Seaside Holiday

Rate: 12 Flag

Several months ago, I was introduced to, and then had to introduce all of you to, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, a delightfuly surreal video featuring a very outspoken one-eyed talking seashell.

After I told my sister about the video, she went a little cuckoo for Marcel, so much so that, on my birthday, she sent me my very own Marcel that she had made herself. (Apparently, she had a hard time finding the shoes. The only ones she could find were orange, so she had to spray paint them white and then use nail polish to put the pink spots on them.) Needless to say, it is one of my favorite gifts ever.

When the time came to go back to St. George Island this year, I naturally had to bring Marcel along, as I figured he would be in his element at the beach. He was  almost carried away by a sandpiper and a crab, but he managed to survive the whole week. Below are a few photos from our trip.

The Birth of Marcel?

Family Reunion (Note the lack of shoes and faces on Marcel's relatives.  He was very perplexed. But I told him that they do things differently in the south.)

Why do they call them shrimp?  They look pretty gigantic next to Marcel. He could only eat one.

Loungin' on the beach.  Marcel had 20 umbrellas to choose from!

20 umbrellas !! Marcel is lucky he didn't get stepped on.
You're telling me, aka! I was very worried that Marcel would get buried in the sand or something. That would be hard to explain to my sister. (He does travel in his own padded box, though!)
Love it! What are Marcel's Thanksgiving plans?
Erica, he's going to play a little touch football with a gang of chipmunks, and then he's got dibs on a turkey wing, three peas and a marshmallow.
Very cute. I bet he doesn't like it when someone says, "Aww shucks!"
Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I'll clam up now. Btw, did you happen to see Sally when you were at the seashore? She was selling sea shells. : ) r
Gawd how silly is that Marcel?!
I like the umbrella pic the most, looks cool...
Trudge, I don't need to buy any seashells from Sally, that's for sure. (BTW, one of my favorite restaurants, Boss Oyster, has t-shirts that say "Shut up and shuck!")

Dicky, Marcel is VERY silly. That's why I love him. And it isn't everyone that can buy their beach umbrellas at a liquor store.
Marcel looks utterly content . . . very "in his element," so to speak. Did he feel odd eating shrimp? I mean, I know they're not directly related, but . . .
Looks like Marcel had a great time by the sea - I'm guessing the humans in your group did too. Where is St. George Island?
Owl, I hadn't thought about the ethical dilemma presented by feeding shrimp to Marcel!

Nanatehay, we all had a wonderful time. SGI is on Florida's gulf coast, about an hour east of Panama City. It's a very laid-back place, with very few people in the autumn.
Marcel is a lucky mollusk (that is what he is, isn't it?)

I love the last two shots - with the wine and then shading himself in the sun.
Marcel is no curmudgeon. Happy Thanksgiving Jeanette.
Everybody needs to get silly now and then. Thanks Marcel.
I like Marcel's rhyme-y name. Oh, and his paper towel towel. This whole post makes me smile, Jeanette. Happy thanksgiving!
St. George looks nice. I miss the beach...
Scarlett, Marcel is human, just like you and me! :-) (Of course, now that I'm home, I have thought of many more shots that would have been fun. Guess we'll have to go back to the beach.)

Sheepy, Marcel is a lot of fun. If you're interested in seeing further adventures, he has a new video. Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!

Hi Willie. I agree that being silly is one of the most important things in life. My sister and I have Marcel to provide that for us.

Happy Thanksgiving, Candace! Glad to make you smile. I don't know what I'd do without Marcel! He definitely makes life a lot more fun.

Frank, the beach was wonderful. If Marcel had thumbs, he would give it a big thumbs up. You need to go back!
Marcel needs to write a blog and tell us what is on his mind,
how he feels about the issues that concern us all
as Americans, and also maybe some travelogues
if he is gonna be going so many cool places.
Cute stuff. I'd love to see a video of Marcel after he drank that glass of Pinot! SGI is gorgeous. We live just a ways west and I remember the days when it was populated with run-down sea shanties, not a condo in sight - it was like that all along the coast from Fort Walton Beach to St. George.
