Oh, by all means, I'd be quite prepared for that eventuality.

A La Claire Fontaine

Rate: 7 Flag

A wistful and melancholy song from the soundtrack of The Painted Veil, a 2006 film based on the book by W. Somerset Maugham.  Set amidst an outbreak of cholera in China in the early 20th century, it depicts the troubled relationship of Walter and Kitty Fane.  Although the movie ends a bit differently than the novel, I love them both.

What a beautiful song. Haven't read the book or seen the movie but this music is like a lullaby.
It's a very pretty song - but even as I appreciate it, it makes me grit my teeth, because the boyfriend always laughs - I can't manage to sing the song in tune and say the right lyrics at the same time - especially "Il y a longtemps que je t'aime, jamais je ne t'oublierai." Too many syllables! Thanks for posting it, though - beautiful version of it, too.
What a beautiful song. I'd like to see the film now...~r
Margaret, I can recommend both. I think the "liberties" they took with the movie make it a bit more emotional, but I also think it works a little better as a story. The ending of the novel is satisfying in a different way.

Alysa, I was actually wondering if you would weigh in. I would never even attempt to sing this song in French, a language which simultaneously has too many syllables and too many silent consonants. How can that be? ;-)

Joan, I hope you do. I thought Edward Norton (who doesn't appear in these scenes, which probably gives away some of the plot) and Naomi Watts gave pretty amazing performances.
Incredible!!!

How delightful to listen to something posted here that is not a raucous blend of electrically amplified instruments and drums being bashed to death.

Although not a particularly happy song, it cheered me up immensely!

Merci Mme Jeanette! Merci beaucoup........!

skypixie0, I must admit that I am a fan of the music you describe, and have posted more than my fair share of same, but I was feeling a bit more somber last night. I'm glad you liked this song as much as I do. A translation of the lyrics can be found here.
Lovely. I saw this movie, and forgot that I did until watching/listening to this. Very beautiful.
Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors...
greenheron, glad to remind you. It is a gray, rainy day here today, and this music fits the mood perfectly. (They also used Erik Satie in the soundtrack, which is appropriate for a day like this as well.)

Joan, me too! Ever since Primal Fear, I've had a crush on him.
Nice. And I found the movie intriguing when I saw it.
Thanks for that lovely clip...Cheers!
