Physicians can prescribe herbs and supplements for the nine million members of the Kaiser Permanente HMO. Kaiser has adopted a program of offering herbs and supplements though its pharmacies. Charles Elder MD says, "Finding quality supplements can be overwhelming for patients. One of the valuable things about this program is that we have taken the burden off members shoulders, by doing the research and legwork ourselves." He goes on to say that making supplements available at pharmacies "can improve clinical outcomes, patient convenience, and quality control".
Products that have been reviewed and currently in stock at Kaiser pharmacies are listed below:
St John’s wort for Depression
Glucosamine (chondroitin) for Osteoarthritis
Gingko Biloba for Cognitive impairment
Omega 3/fish oils for Lipids
Melatonin for Jet lag
Flaxseed for Lipids
Saw palmetto for Prostatic hypertrophy
Echinacea for Upper respiratory infection
Probiotics for diarrhea
Garlic for Atherosclerosis
Coenzyme Q10 for Parkinson disease
Feverfew for Migraine
Ginger for Nausea

I take Cat's Claw and Bromelain (along with an antibiotic) currently to help with Lyme coupled with sarcoidosis.
Good post.

I mentioned this to my cancer surgeon (it was my oncologist who put me on the AI drug) and he suggested I try fish oil capsules. About a week after starting a high-quality, purified fish oil the pain diminished significantly. Enough to allow me to function again.
I think too many doctors have a closed mind about complementary medicine. This is an ideological position, not a reasoned one. If natural remedies are so useless, why was taxol--initially derived from yew trees--given to me to fight the cancer?
Thanks for bringing this up.
