Here There be Dragonaes

Rate: 7 Flag

Time, fearlessness, human spirit, and even necessity helped power that boat out towards the New World hundreds of years ago. The sheer audacity that humanity could dream to sail over the unknown and Not fall right off the edge of its universe as it was understood stands as one of the world’s spiritual wonders. My heart soars with these brave hearts. My soul swims with these brave souls that sail o’er uncharted seas bearing only the name “Here There Be Dragonaes”.

I agree. And I am afraid of a dark room
Well-said!
Thank you :) - Peece!
Yeah, who were those people? Unlike you, I can't relate. I'm glad they did it, though. (What's funny is that apparently I'm *glad* they massacred all the native peoples, too. I say that sarcastically but I think a little bit of its truth leaked out when I said to my fifth grade students, who were asking about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict: "Well, those people have been fighting over that land for 60 years. Imagine if the Indians hadn't been wiped out by Small Pox and killed by the Europeans when they came here. We might still be fighting over land yet. There are places around the world, kids, where whole generations have grown and died fighting with each other and never knew peace. Aren't you glad we don't have to deal with that?" OOPS. It sounded an awful lot like I'm glad we wiped out the natives.
Maybe that’s what happens when we speak about events without the benefit of putting on our pre-conceptions or even some of our prejudices. It’s more of a reflex response. I think it’s at these times that some of what we understand as truth leaks out and makes us think. I love the way you explained it. It would seem every time we look at nature and wonder at its beauty we applaud the survivors. The majestic redwood standing tall over the remains of smaller trees that died due to lack of sunshine and nutrients is one example. Our United States is but another. It’s that leak that tweaks the inner voice in my head, again. Perhaps if we were to take any event at all, given enough time, tens, hundreds, or even thousands of years, it could be described the same; “I'm glad we wiped out the natives.” My thoughts are really scattered. If my mind was a muscle and you were a workout, this is the point where I double up and spew a bit. Maybe even pass out.

Thanks again and please don’t be a stranger.

The funny thing is that I looked so nonplussed when I said it that I felt like I had to explain, so I asked the class, "Do you guys realize what I sorta just said?" Most didn't get it, but one definitely did and he explained it and then they all did. I love when they really use their brains like that, in meta ways.
as i read this i thought of seth... and those like him (tio), who stomp in definance as they hear the shouting: "DON'T DO IT! YOU'LL SURELY FALL OF THE EDGE!" ... continue to soar, continue to swim - with furious determination - as the rest of them continue to watch in anger and in awe...
