Best Pop-Culture Excuse for a Murder in at Least a Week

Rate: 20 Flag

This will be my first and only contrib to Pop-C-C, Pop-Culture Criminality, and anyone with "Sloot" in his name.

Needless to say, and despite the intervening FOG of CASEY,

PHOTO:ÒÂÒàCasey Anthony listens to testimony during her murder trial at the Orange County Courthouse, in this June 30, 2011 file photo in Orlando, Fla.

you do recall missing Texas teen Natalee Holloway and her un-tried, un-convicted prob-killer, Joran van der Sloot.

It turns out, and five years to the day after Ms. Holloway's disappearance, Mr. van der Sloot with his head bowed told the Peruvian jury that convicted him in the more recent strangulation murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores

that he was "truly sorry". His lawyer told the Lima court that his client "killed Ms. Flores in a state of extreme psychological trauma" brought on because he was "persecuted" during the Holloway investigation. Prosecutors are seeking a thirty-year sentence.

     Please.

If this isn't the best excuse for a murder you're heard in at least a week, say so now.

...and may well be the most bizarre excuse for a murder in somewhat moe than a week.
I read that by admitting basically "no contest" that 30 years was or will be reduced to 10. I hope 10 years in a Peruvian jail is long, hot time.
Jon, while I'm not *sure* of this, I think there's a prison social culture there similar to the one in U.S. prisons in which new male inmates get a one-time choice whether to try to prove their physical dominance to rule as a "boyfriend" -- or to either try and lose of simply submit, becoming a "girlfriend."

While role-playing is fine between two consenting people, from what I've read about this utter waste of valuable airspace, he probably doesn't fit that profile.

If he ends up being a "girlfriend" against his will, I will take a certain evil satisfaction of of that fact. Particularly if his new-found "boyfriend" decides to help speed the acclimatization process with a fat, blunt, object.

Good luck, Mr. Sloot.
See, Kurt the death penalty may be far too good for some.
I'm sure his dad is negotiating at this very moment to get the monster into a halfway house somewhere in the Netherlands.
Matt some father that bum is i could understand that were the bastard sentenced to die, but intervention now is sickening
Don't know if it's the best excuse of the week, I'm sure there are better... At the same time no one sicker without being insane...I hope he's good boyfriend material, say thirty years worth...
Ray May His Prison Time be Interesting
I am, like you , opposed to the death penalty- simply because i don't trust the government with that power. That said, given his statement, I would take it as a civic duty to "put him to sleep", simply as a way of helping this troubled individual recover from the trauma he has endured. In line with my religious belief in the sanctity of life, he deserves a fresh start. (Christianity and reincarnation are not mutually exclusive, especially when espoused by a Zen Buddhist)
Token as long as he's kept off the streets, ok by me
Re Sloot's possible "girlfriend" status: He's a big guy. Most Peruvians are short. He'll probably prevail.
Myriad of course, 2 or 3 can usually out-wrestle 1 tho i do not hope that's his fate i just want him away from women
I'm not a pop culture follower either, but I know who Van Sloot is and he seems to be a bad bit of business. Maybe now he will go away and not pop-up on my AOL browser every damn morning. I just stumbled on you blog and like its viewpoint. R
That guy looks sinister,no wonder he has no clear conscience.
People who kill other human beings, are insane.
Whether or not this guy is accountable for his actions, there is no excuse for anything he did.
Thirty years are fine with me;after that time he has lost his zest and might prepare for old age in the desert.
Heidi some, yes, are insane. Others are run-of-the-mill greedy, too.
This is a truly sick person. There are few examples better than he is of this kind of illness. Incarceration, whether he's treated as a "man" or a "woman" does nothing to help either him or society. We need to start getting real about this kind of illness. We don't understand it. By "we" I mean our professional psychiatrists and psychologists.

It's time we gained more knowledge about this illness so as to recognize its early signs and to establish treatment programs that can turn aside its development into full blown insanity.

Why aren't people like him used as study subjects and experimental guinea pigs? Most research psychologists would give a lot for the funding and opportunity to study him in minute detail. Our society would gain immensely from such studies. And he can be kept fully incarcerated, in a psychological institution, AT LESS COST TO THE TAXPAYER, at the same time.

Instead, we let our lizard-brain control us and demand our "pound of flesh" - punishment; we do this even when we know that it is tantamount to demanding punishment for people ill from cancer. We ain't too bright, I tells ya, we ain't too bright....

.
Sky I'll be interested in seeing what others say re: your proposal. Thank you.
very bizarre. thankfully Peru's prisons are brutal, not the country clubs of free tv and internet like US prisons
Poppi no internet no TV? Cruel!
This is DEFINITELY the best excuse.

Rated/Bud
Bud better than any Pnina ever used. :)
Well I know he is not going to have much fun or be at least in peace being in a Peruvian jail or any prison here in Latin America... and yes that is a very very scary excuse...
Love and hugs friend

This guy needs to be locked up big time and the key thrown away. I do believe he thinks he rules the world. Apparently he is suing Holloway's family too for duress..
Give me a break
HUGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Linda now THAT law suit will go far... ... ... wow.
I agree with skypixie - we need to understand as much as we need to punish. His illness knows no other way than to seek out a narcissistic position to his perceived "traumas". True sociopaths know no other way - of which he is one. What is truly alarming, is the attorney who would sling that kind of bullshit.

Based on your capital punishment piece awhile back, I am surprised by the tone of this.
He's a serial murderer. Using the "abuse excuse" is just that: an excuse.

I hope he rots in jail for a very, very, very long time. Saying he's truly sorry is a lie.

Insofar as the Casey case, she's definitely exhibited NPD traits and her last stunt gave me shivers...
B. perhaps Casey and Joran deserve one another... ... ...
I tend to agree with Sky this time. Anyone who is capable of these heinous crimes, unprovoked and without any discernible motive, is clearly functioning abnormally. I have no problem whatsoever submitting him to science for extensive study, so long as he is institutionalized the entire time. Beating him, raping him, humiliating him or killing him will do nothing to prevent similar crimes, whereas research at least could.

Lezlie
Lezlie I am not for his being brutalized. If he is a serial killer, perhaps our FBI can work w Peruvian authorities to study him, unless his father gets him to Amsterdam and that half-way house.
Both of them are pure evil. They should not be allowed to roam freely with other humans. Look in their eyes. I see lost souls. No amount of forensic psychiatric care or treatment will ever cure them of their evils. Neither are capable of rehabilitation.
B. likely so, tho he could be studied nonetheless to useful effect.
I've no problems with either of them being used as lab rats provided highly qualified experts in various fields of psychiatry/psychology treat these animals humanely.
First of all, if this animal is allowed free, after a mere ten years of incarceration, that is a travesty and a brutal slap in the face to his victims and their families. My rapist is serving MUCH longer than that before he's even up for parole. A person who takes another's life needs to either lose theirs or be locked away forever.

Secondly, to all of you that are gleefully proposing/promoting/condoning the rape of ANYONE, shame on you! I know many of you are just saying it rhetorically, but to wish that upon ANYONE is disgusting and reprehensible!
Amy you're right on all points here.
Were he used to help understand gys like him, ok; to brutalize him sullies all involved.
well, its better than the "twinkie" defense, for kiling gay san francisco elected officials (sugar evidently made the killer hyper and dimmed his self control)

with the bankruptcy yesterday of the hostess bakery, presumably gays around the nation will feel a sense of relief.
Balt I am forlorn at the loss of Twinkies.

And I wish this Sloot fella many, many decades in prison.
I hear those prisons are tough. Who knows, with no money, he may not make it.
Scanner my bet's hid dad buys him to Holland.
I think people like this man should be incarcerated where he can't harm more people. His defense attorney is doing what defense attorneys do, defending the indefensible crimes of their clients. I think the excuse is ridiculous, but he's probably throwing s--t at the wall to see what sticks. However, once in prison, the prisoners deserve to be treated like humans, even if they themselves haven't behaved as human beings. I don't advocate glorying in thoughts of rape or other punishments envisioned because that is the measure of the gaps in our own souls. (I know, I know, preachy, preachy!)
cc i'm w you and amy and others on that aspect of this i also think he oughta be off the streets for many, many decades
First, a factual note: His father is DEAD. He won't be doing anything to benefit him and I doubt anyone else in a position of (Dutch) authority wishes to prolong the embarrassment of having this sociopath on the loose until he could kill again.

Secondly, much as MY lizard brain recoil in disgust looking at him and the unimaginable pain that he has put two families through makes me want to rip his ghastly smile off, along with his face, I'll have to agree with Sky. It's crazy that we do not focus on what evidence can be gleaned from people like him in order to avoid them ever developing to the point where this sort of discussion is necessary. I'd love to know what infinitesimal fraction of funds and research is being done on this issue (and headway has been made - brain scans have found some real differences) compared to say, just the benefits paid to California's most powerful lobbying group: The Prison Guards.
R
Sam thanks for the info re: the dad; the report I'd read then may be in error.
I also agree that we miss a bet when we do not use these kinds of people for the greater good.
He died in February 2010, according to Fox News.

Lezlie
Justice is so elusive. True justice. I hope he finds this experience for the next 28 years (if he survives) hideously uncomfortable. I think he is a waste of space.
