Fortune's "Top 100 Best-to-Work-For"--Justice=Good Business

Rate: 21 Flag

These are the 100 top companies to work for, according to Fortune Magazine. They are, not coincidentally, companies that have pledged to protect gay employees from all kinds of discrimination as part of their general non-discrimination policies.

CNN/Money describes these companies this way:

Fat paychecks, sweet perks, fun colleagues, and over 70,000 jobs ready to be filled -- these employers offer dream workplaces.

Whether or not you're enamored of large corporations, there's no doubt that they're here and will be for quite some time. There's no wishing them away nor is there any credible argument to be made by anyone here for any kind of direct action against them that would force them to disappear.

When they embrace social equality in any significant way, I will raise it up and frankly I don't care if it done in the name of self-interest...everything they do is for self-interest--this kind of decision's in society's interest, too.
I am all for equality in the workplace. Okay just generally for the equality of people. Corporations are like people in that way though some are benighted, bigots with self serving their only interest. Kudos should go to the ones that try if for no other reason than to encourage the behavior.
This is a good trend. Let's keep it going.

Rated/Bud
Bud perhaps the list will influence other businesses, yes.
Thanks for posting this listing. Justice is indeed good business.
Great information. Will pass it along. Have some unemployed in mind.
Thanks
Some companies must be on this list because they pay well. That can cover one's attitudes on a lot of issues. It looks like a disproportionate number of service industries, so heavy lifting remains unpopular. I'm surprised IBM didn't make the cut.
Thanks's Jon. You dedication is amazing!.
Scanner As I know you know, when Justice comes for minorities we all win. :)
Justice...what a "Revolutionary" idea! Many of these offer job sharing...another terrific idea whose time has come. ...at least in some corners of the world. rated...you do amaze :}
Muse I didn't know re: the sharing. Thanks!
There is a misconception that passing an amendment to remove Corporate Personhood would hurt corporations. Corporations would continue to exist, but as business entities, not as PEOPLE. They should not have the rights listed in the first amendment. They are not people, and should never have been said to be so. I applaud those that are progressive and stand up for individual rights, which I always believe should be supported. There are many such companies in Japan, that actually take the welfare of their employees into consideration when they make decisions. I understand that they do not lay people off but instead lower their profits, because they are committed to their employees for life. I wish that all corporations were moral and willing to allow smaller companies to exist and compete, but most are not. Praise the ones that are. And thank you all for going against the trend of cutting costs by cutting people. Best to you.
Corporations are people too, ya know!
ink mr chief justice roberts agrees
I am shocked to see Mens Wherehouse and I just dont know why.
He loks the mogul type.
HUGGGGGGGG
Linda I know pwople who worked for him; said he's an ok fella. :)
Goldman Sachs???????? Well, there's self interest and there's selfish interest. I worked for JP Morgan Chase, being the "Peggy" ( unhelpful card customer service) for food stamps and unemployment. JP Morgan Chase has wonderful employee benefits- but it represents Crony Capitalism at its finest. Think that corporations oppose government programs like food stamps? Not when they can be paid handsomely to "administer" them. As far as helping the people who get food stamps? (and unemployment, and welfare) ? Sorry guys, if it takes more than 120 seconds for me to tell you you're screwed, it aint my job. No wonder Chase CEO Jamie Dimond and the Pres are such good buds!
Token as I have said above I get it that in this case social justice in their interest. Mine, too. My gy friends' interest too. Fine w me.
I was surprised to see Goldman Sachs as well, but this is a really interesting list. Am sending to my son who is looking for a job out of college.
Miguela CNN/Money says most of them are.
Wegmans is the local food store in my area and it is a stellar place to shop and work. I know several former IBM employees who after taking an early out went to work there and their medical benefits and working conditions are wonderful. Also, Alec Baldwin's mother when asked why she wouldn't move to California replied, "And leave my Wegamans." Alec now does commercials for the store.
Funny how many of these firms are the financial companies complicit in our 2008 meltdown. It would be interesting to look through and see how many of them actually make anything, and how many of those companies are pharma.

I do know that Qualcomm is an excellent company; I had the chance to do some work for them years ago and was impressed with the ethical nature of their decision making. They put employees first.
70,000 jobs should make a dent in the unemployment figures, shouldn't it?

Jonathan

The point I was making is that in the case of Chase, I know, because I have been part of it, that the workers are treated well.

But, It would be hard to find a way to treat those who "Benefit" from Chase's administration of Food stamps, General welfare, and Unemployment programs, worse.

Jamie Dimon does well for him and his. It's Food Stamp, Welfare, and Unemployment recipients who are screwed in order to pay for it. ( Not that you aren't screwed by the banks when they administer your commercial credit cards, it's just that they kiss you and send you flowers first- and they call you back endlessly to see when you will be available to be screwed again)

Because the government has delivered the "Welfare" funds into Jamie's hands (and those most effected have no say--Thanks, Dems and a special thanks to my Buddy the Bamster!) Chase can handsomely afford to treat the Food Stamp recipients like scum. ( and they do)

(Crony) Capitalism at its finest!
PS One might wonder if Chase's employees are so well compensated as an attempt to dull their natural humanity about treating people in need as statistics- the "executioner" is usually well paid- it speaks to the times that "executioners" come so cheaply- yet they still must be put in fear of "What they have to lose". Oh well, the more you're paid to treat people as statistics, the easier it becomes to ignore their humanity- just look at our federal government. (Talk about well compensated employees!)
FusunA it'd help, sure. :)
Justice is very good business.
Noticed only one automotive related company on this list and it's not a manufacturer. It's CarMax which has a dramatically different model from any other "dealer group" and it only deals with used cars. Interesting.
I wonder if this information will keep the Santorums of the world from utilizing the services of these various entities?

The humanity of these various corporations lends credence to the claim that they are people too...but I still don't believe it.
beauty under-law and in the public-mind are not necessarily the same ideas :)
As a very happy employee of one of these, I just had to drop in and applaud.
Read & rated. Comment left at FB.
I strangely agree with your comment too, Jon. Reading the list, I found many I do not want to do without. In fact, I don't even want to call them corporations! R
Thoth yet, of course, thay are. :)
It's a bit too easy these days to get caught up in the thinking that big business is automatically a bad thing - thanks for a great reminder that there are many with redeeming qualities.
When I worked for Citi, I was a member of their pride network. I was very proud of that!
It only makes sense to treat your employees well. A happy employee is a productive employee... They are willing to go to greater lengths for the company if they feel as though they are appreciated....
I support such a choice. But to get my full support, a company must also be "worker friendly" and Union-friendly. If they aren't, they can rot in hell.
Very informative and fascinating list. I knew that Container Store has been rated as the best retailer in the US to work for, however, also the most difficult to break into to and be hired. Great longevity and benefits. Based in Texas.
