Vow of Silence

Rate: 44 Flag

A vow of silence.

A rest from my own voice.

A rest from my judgements, my knees that jerk, my fumbled attempts at communication.

Words are my lifeline and the rope I hang myself with.

For a little while, I need to be quiet.

I need to listen.

For a little while.

Shhhh! Joan needs some serenity. Walk softly and smile.
Linnn, I just need to shut my big mouth. :)
Me, too, I think. Very nice for everyone to do sometimes.
hmmm...

enjoy your restful respite. then come back with bells on your toes. :)
a pleasure to read on this gray morning
Perhaps I'll join you in this...and we also need to get our no-TV no-Facebook days on so that our spirits may be renewed. You will, of course, still talk to me, right?
Ann, right. Damn, I'm talking already!
Be well Joan and serenity now!!
HUGGGGGGGGGGG
Reminds me of naptime in Kindergarten. That peaceful feeling as everyone settled down on their mats. I'm big on naps, but any kind of rest can reset your buttons.
I did this, it helps. Then sometimes it helps to put it all out there for other people, not the "real" people in your life. Your feel the relief of putting it out there , while the others do not judge, since they are unaware.r
What . . . what did you say?
I'm glad to see I'm not alone in feeling this way. -R-
A person can learn a lot just listening. :)
I am sitting in the back stairwell at work, so people do not find me for a few moments. So Joan, you can imagine how this resonates with me. Thank you!
I won't say a word. HmmmR.
Peace of mind appears to be right behind that beautiful gate pictured above. Check it out and then come on back to the fray.

this photo needs to go next to bishop's gate on your gallery wall
I am a large fan of a periodic speechless day. It is surprisingly easy to do, even among loved ones who are not silent. You tell them you won't be conversing. Most people respect that. We arrogant humans call silence what results when we stop talking. When we stop talking, "silence" turns out to be a symphony of sound...birds, cars, the dishwasher, the trash pick up. I hope you enjoy this treat. Report back, eh?
We all need a bit of peace. Some of my most interesting moments come when I sit back and quietly observe.
I think I tell myself this same ting almost every day - thanks for putting it into words.
Not too long, okay? Silence can do a number on you if it goes on unchecked. :)

Wise words, well dispensed
Ha! You've spoken already. Peace to you.
it helps to get outside where the spaces are larger than the inside of your own head and you hear things besides the hum of the computer and the ringtone of your phone. go to your garden, joanie. i'll be in mine.
I agree with you so completely. In my own life, my own words have become like gospel where in reality, they are meaningless so much of the time.
Is today Mr. H's birthday?
I crave Silence.
I yearn for Silence.

My farm partner was Michelle.

Her name can be Pudendum. Gaud!

At last a happy truth is out-
Port wine is not the cause of gout;
Far more responsible for pain
Are kidneys, liver, sweetbread, brain-
The clubman should by any means
Avoid anchovies and sardines,
and citizens of every sort
Owe some apology to Port!

My 'R' button never functioned @ Open Salon.
I may visit the Blue Dog Saloon in Nova Scotia.
It's a teacher thing, I guess. It happens to me, too.

Listening is a practiced skill. I think we all probably need to practice it more than we do.
I know this has something to do with your daughter being home and your school year ending. You HAVE been listening for months. I dare say that the voice you will share with us - soon - will reflect the silence that you are experiencing AND the reflective parts of having your most beloved home again. (btw- she is young and beuatiful and she will always come home.)
Yes, I know this feeling very well. Enjoy your quietude.
I love your choice of a door.

@ Larry : That's Tuesdays, remember ?
Well, it kind of like this. Sometimes, one can just never say the right thing when immature ears are listening. The years of experience and living flood one's mind and one's mouth runneth over. Is this wrong? Only if the ears which are listening deem it so with awkward silence, (the best), wise crack remarks, eye rolling or sighs of varying nature, relief, disgust, exasperation....

I like the silent emphasis. One expresses and then retreats. No engagement of opposing forces, merely a statement. Whatever the occasion remember this, retorts work best when stated out loud in a timely manner...if you are silent, well, you miss the opportunity for great repartee.

Silence is only golden if you need it to re group, re think or re strategize.
...Be still and know....Loved this, Joanie!
You are a writer. You can only be quiet for so long. We'll wait.
Joan, There's a multitude of ears that will be bent your way whenever you are ready. In the meantime although it's cliche, silence IS golden.
Enjoy.
B-b-but, where will I leave my slobbery comments?
So peaceful...Hope you enjoy your quiet time, Joanie H! :)
Thank you everyone for reading. I'm not going anywhere, though. I wrote this because of well, just something I need to be mindful of. The knee-jerk-speak without thinking person I am sometimes gets the best of me.
Yes, if I've said it once I've said it a thousand times: "I wish that loud mouth bully Joan H. would just shut her trap!"

NOT :)
I do so love me some Lainey.
sometimes quiet is loud.
Ahh..the sounds of silence. Glad you're not going anywhere.
Enjoy the silence...but please don't keep quiet for too long! I'd miss your writing!
I give mime lessons...
i know this feeling...
lately i have craved a different sort of silence.
the sort that involves other people keeping their mouths shut.
of course, i live with teen-aged girls...so that might explain it.
enjoy the silence, Joan, and please return.
It's all good, kiddo. Chillax. And talk to us soon.
I've been practicing what you preach. No one's noticing, but hey - that's the chance you take. I'll shut up now.
not too damn long, i hope. your silence.
women need to be much more vocal, like that rita woman.
she is a fine woman and a damn big mouth, but she pulls it off
with elegance and panache .

I took the moon from her,
and she gave me hell for it.
