I Heart DC

Rate: 46 Flag

Today I spent the day the way the tourists do.

Unlike the tourists, I did not wear an "I Heart DC" t-shirt, a baseball cap turned backwards, or a fanny pack. I did not stand on the wrong side of the escalator on the metro. And I didn't ride a Segway.

I did however, see some of the most beautiful and interesting sights Washington has to offer.

I started at the Capitol where I had gone to meet my daughter the summer intern.

Jesus was there today~

DSC_1347

So was this Capitol police with his rifle~

DSC_1352

I thought about Bea (and all our other published authors here) at the Library of Congress~

DSC_1333

I did not ride one of these~ (although it looked like fun)DSC_1353

I stopped by the pond near the Botanical Gardens and fed some ducks~

DSC_1360

I went to one of my favorite places, The National Gallery.

This is the West Building where I spent most of my time with the Botticelli's and other Madonna and Child paintings.

This DaVinci takes my breath away every time.

 DSC_1390

Looked at the waterfall cascading down the building. (Hi aim!)

DSC_1403

Took the walkway to the East Building of the gallery~It is actually a light sculpture called Multiverse.

DSC_1404

Where I promptly got off and rode it again.

DSC_1405

The East Building has an entirely different feel to it~

It's light and airy and has the Alexander Calder mobile hanging overhead.

DSC_1416

DSC_1409

I stopped at a Picasso~

DSC_1412

I stopped to take a picture of myself ~

DSC_1339

Walking along Pennsylvania Avenue, I noticed how enormous the Canadian Embassy is. I think they deserve it.

DSC_1425

The Newseum is hands down one of the best museums anywhere.

Outside, the front page of the newspapers are changed daily.

DSC_1427

It is so hot today, no one is eating outdoors until the sun goes down.

DSC_1428

Yes, I stood in the middle of the street for this shot. Let's see the tourists do that.

DSC_1424

No tourists were harmed in the making of this article.

Yes, the Segway photo was recycled. It just never gets old.
I heart your photo essays of DC. Looks like you had the kind of day I thoroughly enjoy.

@Joisey: stop your flirting! Joanie don't play that. :D

Lezlie
Thanks, Joisey. Why did I think you lived in Joisey?
Lezlie, thank you for coming by!
You have such a wonderful eye, which goes so well with your always well-chosen words. Makes me miss when I lived in DC, about 20 years ago. The grandeur remains.
And congrats on your daughter, the intern.
This was utterly delightful! And I agree - that Leonardo painting is just gorgeous. I saw it by chance when I had about a half hour to run through the National Gallery before it closed. I was disappointed I didn't get to see more art (and your wonderful pictures reinforce that disappointment) but that canvass alone was well worth the trip. And I love that walkway! I want to go back to DC and go on it! Ideally with you and other DC-area OSers - wouldn't that be the coolest meet-up?

Also, the Segway photo was hilarious.
I've never been to DC but I'm dying to get there. Maybe when it's cool enough to eat at an outside cafe. I promise I won't ride a Segway...
Such a beautiful walking tour, Joanie H! My favorite shot is the one of you taking the photo of yourself...thanks for sharing these! :)
artglass, thank you for coming along!
Alysa, when you come to DC we will meet at the National Gallery for sure.
Joisey, Ah, I didn't know. Geography was never my strong point!
My first visit to DC was in the oppressive heat of summer. Love that you can take photographs in the National Gallery. I liked to sit in the galleries and wait until a tourist tried to touch a painting. Great fun.
Thank you Botticelli and Joan H. I am going to the museum today too, to see a Man Ray exhibit. You know, those buses are kind of thrill when you stand inside that caterpillar section and go around corners.
Now I consider DC my city too, but it never looks go grand as it does through your eyes. I don't know what it is about those segways that makes a person look instantly dorky. The segway cops are the worst.
i heart DC too and am just a little jealous pf your proximity to the museums... but then again, that proximity comes with snow at times, so...maybe not.
Jaime, the fall is a perfect time to visit!
clay ball, your favorite? You are so kind. I do have a thing about taking pictures of my reflection in odd places.
Lucy, I *always* have the urge to touch the paintings...
greenheron, enjoy that exhibit!
BSB, Yes. The Segway cops are the dorkiest.
you are adorable and this is great. I have to get back to the national gallery which is a great excuse to get back to DC. wonderful joanie. great pictures.
scrolled back to look at the art and noticed... jesus is rockin' a pink robe! how cool and metro of him.
lorianne, it doesn't snow *too* often. But any snow is bad in my book, too.
Foolish Monkey, I will be your tour guide. Let me know when!
Your words and your photos are always worth a visit, and give pause in their simplicity. Just curious if you sketch, too. (Really.)
. . . did you see the dancing protestors at the Jefferson Memorial, or have they been crushed by Homeland Security killjoys?
This looks so fun. I had no idea there were so many beautiful places in DC. I would love to go, bring my grandchildren when they are a little older. Thank you for sharing it all.
Have you told your daughter to beware of the men who work there?
Great pics Joan. Made me really miss home though I'm now only 45 mins away in Baltimore. Thanks.
DC and tourists . . . the fun never ends! This provided, as Jon Stewart would say, my moment of Zen.
lorianne, it suits him, doesn't it?
Lea, thank you so much for your kind words. I don't do anything artistic with a pencil, paintbrush, no. I love that you asked, though!
Con, hopefully there will be some more dancing at the Jefferson Memorial on the 4th of July underneath the fireworks. What could be more American?
As a DC native this was wonderful and heartbreaking as life has taken me away to a new place. Thank you for such a brilliant love story!
I followed Lea Lane. I'll think for crying out loud while the photos download slow.
You hopped a red two-decker Tourist Open air bus? Tou sat on the lower level too?
Your daughter?
She sat on top?
I love to sit on the top of the two-decker bus and watch Canadian geese. They quack.
I hear 'Shoryo' is a old word that alludes to what Christians and orthodox beliefs call`
`
The Great (holy) Spirit.
Natives said similar stuff.
I'd called you 'Hon' but`
`
Your husband may yell.
DC is run by Atilla Hon.
`

We have an Ad Nauseam museum in my town.

(I hope this isn't an abusive comment)
i love dc, too, joan, and appreciate some reminders of why i do. we won't be there for the 4th this year but maybe next. maybe a newseum meetup? lovely composition, much deserves the cover.
You're contending that a tourist wouldn't stand in the middle of a busy road to take a picture? If I saw you doing it, I would say, "Yikes. These tourists are unbelievable."

I never went for those Madonna and child pictures. The Picasso, however...
You could do these tours every week or so...I never tire of them! So much here I know and or remember fondly! sigh!
Utterly beautiful and fantastic. I never tire of DC and you have some great shots of it here. I admire you for braving the heart, I would absolutely melt! Thanks for sharing this and congrats on the EP!!!! Awesome and well deserved!
Janice, it was part of her training there. I kid you not.
Willett, it's good to see you. Baltimore is still very close. I keep meaning to get to the Baltimore Museum of Art one of these days.
Owl, so glad to provide that!
Ron, thank you for taking the tour!
Art, you can call me Hon.
alsoknownas, thanks for coming by.
Larry, your comment has already been reported.
I want you to take your tripod and get a REAL GOOD photo of that icon madonna, because it looks like something Modigliani would make. Oh, maybe I will just come there and we do it together, because I want to see that light sculpture. I might go into a trance.
DC... haven't been for a long time. Too long. And it's my husband's home town.
Looks like a great day! Nice photos and cool that your daughter is a summer intern!
You are so lucky to live there. What a wonderful tour.
I hope to go on a visit to Washington (LONG drive from home) on a bus with a group of friends who are in a choir. Hope the crossing is uneventful, unlike the one we experienced almost two weeks ago!

My time won’t be my own, but I hope to see as much of your beautiful capital as I can in the allotted time. Thank you for the taste of things to come.
Knowing Jesus hangs around the capitol makes me feel happy for some reason.
I love this--love the pics, the Library of Congress, the architecture, the folks--all good.
Art galleries are my favorite rejuvenating spots in any city. May I steal your day? I heart Joanie:)
My birthplace and a city I love as well as Santa Fe. Your pictures were most welcome. I have not been there since 1983. My last week's fiction excerpt, Marble and Mud, has some playful descriptions of statues on DC monuments.
I love WDC too Joan. I think in spite of my cynicism, and political curmudgeonliness at times, deep down I love our country and the capitol for what it represents, for what it and we should be.

I always love seeing through your lens too, and the words you use to describe your vision. I hope the bride has a trip scheduled to WDC so I can accompany her, because I'd love to walk around on a photo shoot with you too.

Thanks for this Joan.
It's fun to play tourist once in a while. Excellent pictures. I like your mid-street shot (including bike lane).
Beautiful photos. I've always wanted to go to D.C. -R-
An interesting melange of photos. Is Jesus at the Capitol a mannequin, or a man? What was he doing there?
All this and you got to see Jesus too!!

:-) / r

Great post and a great day!
Entertaining post with beautiful pics, Joanie. Thanks for the call on our Embassy. After all, it's Canada Day on Friday July 1st!
Very enjoyable photo essay. Wish I had a big blowup of that photo of Multiverse. Nice light.

Thank you for doing without the fanny pack.
Multiverse looks delightful. I need to add Newseum to my to-do list. Always delighful to go on one of Joanie' photo tours.
Cool Joanie, enjoy this DC tour!
DC is wonderful. I lived ther several years in the 80's and was never bored. I wish I were there now. Thanks for sharing you photos

Loved that DaVinci too! Wow. Thanks for the virtual walking tour. Why are those people on those vehicles (final shot)? Don't get that. Can't anyone just walk anymore? They look able enough.
Loved this! I haven't played "tourist" in many years, in fact I've been away from the city long enough that I actually am one again. :)
I heart this post, I heart you for creating it (with both words and photos as only you can) and of course I also heart DC. It is "my" city, always has been. A sixth generation DC-ite, I continue to find new and fascinating details, angles and juxtapositions each time I come into town, which is quite often. You've just made me feel really, truly at home with this and I thank you.
Dear Hon,
John H.
I was gonna PM.
Darn Hon.
My Son, Michael,
Michael said you came by the farm market stand. You bought a bunch of red beets?
Eat the stem leaves.
Boil some pot water.
Toss in thee greens.
The water gives vim
Pot teas gives vigor.
Pot Teas is just the green tea water that steeped in the boiled pot water. Sorry I missed You. I was hoping you would stay at market and Play the Trombone.
I asked if You had a horn?
He thought You had a cello.
He mentioned - No vitriol.
He said You Panhandled?
You filled with your viola.
`
My passport expires in July.
I love Farm the Trombonist.
I bought one @ 5 & ten shop.
`
I wished I was Panhandling with You.
It's fun to shoplift at Dollar Shops too.
I watched politico come and go porno.
Archibald is nearby the White House.
`
"If the American People really knew"`
`
Harry Reid always says 'the american people'`
`
If The American People Knew - They have heart attack.
`
I was wandering around DC streets pretending to be psychotic.

My gaud - a homeless woman yelled "Get a damn haircut" at me.

I stopped by at sidewalk steak-cafe's to whisper "Try tofu" huh!

Carnivores can rummage through trash can and find pizza crust.

I found quite a few red-tipped cigarettes and visited `Draper's.

It's a cigar joint. It's fun to sit on park benches and smoke them.

I ate a Santa Fe tortilla at Chop's Salad Shop near a Porn Store.

Lafayette Park - It a loitering area and secret service hangout.

If You ever are in DC loitering I hope we panhandle together.

I may take time away from blogs and write a` PhD Diet Book.
Oops
I wished I was selling beets when You came by. Next Time?
Tattoo.
We go to a parlor.
My Tattoo may say`
`
Watch your back.
Smile. I love You.
You in bib overalls.
Michael Loved You.
We'll meet again too.
Let's sure hope we do.
Fun photo essay. And Happy 4th of July!
@Art~ I am so sorry to have missed you. The beets were the best I'd ever had. (really)
I kept hanging around so I thought I was making Michael nervous. I think he thought I was a little nuts.
See you next week?
Wow I never saw the capital like this and your images give me a better understanding of the place and more.
Nice pics Joan. I went through the Newseum last year and quite enjoyed it. The guy at the front desk told me it took around 2.5-3 hours to see it all. He underestimated by about half so the last part was a running tour. I'll be back to get the rest of it before long.
I'm hot just looking at those pictures. Not "inappropriate hot"...I mean temperature hot. I feel the need to clarify since Jesus was in attendance. Those Da Vinci broads are always cool. I wish I knew their secret.
Thanks for the great sights and words of a city I was so happy to live in for a number of years.
Well, it is Canada day, you know. So of course, the Canadians flew their flag, eh? I mean, that's what the day is all aboot.

Too hot to eat outside. Ah, yes, DC in the summer. Won't miss that oppressive heat and humidity. And that's always when the tourists come. Guys, guys, guys, wrong time. You want to go to DC in in April or early May, or you want to go in September to early October. Otherwise, it's too hot or too cold.
Do tourists rent those Segways? If you ever see me on one, you have my permission to shoot me, with bullets not film. You'll be doing me and my family a favor.

Love this report and your magnificent photos.
I just now scanned the comments and saw the abusive one Leepin Larry left, so I flagged this post, but explained that it was Leepin who should be removed, not you, Joanie. Sorry, Leepin, I used to like you, but I CAN NOT tolerate abusive comments!
@Matt, thanks for flagging. Larry must be stopped. By the way, where *is* he this weekend?
Lovely to walk along with you, Joan. A friend of mine works at the Library of Congress. You brought her here for a while. And your daughter is an intern at the Capitol this summer? Hope she is loving every minute there.
Thanks for taking us with you Joan! Happy 4th of July!
Joan H. Congrats on a EP.
I didn't follow anybody.
I saw on the Feed`
`
Pest control services.
One new post sold guns.
I heard "Old Glory" song.
Next? Ads wave gun pistols.
No wave Iver Johnson's old`
blue pitted 12 gage shotgun.

I'll go feed cats Merry Monk.
That's a real high content Ale.
The dogs lap from toilet bowl.
No gulp Alcohol or blog today.

Feed pomegranates to` Jesus.
WE need more help than him?
Joan? What apostle was cutest?
That da Vinci had the greatest gift known to man...
Your tour makes me want to visit!
We live with tourists in our town too, so I'll skip the segway, the meandering stroll down the middle of the sidewalk, blocking everyone with somewhere to go, and I'll act like a proper human when I do actually, finally come to your fair city.
