The View From My Friend's Window

Rate: 57 Flag

The view from my window is pretty dull. No matter which room you are standing in, it all looks pretty much the same.  Fortunately, I have friends with remarkable views of the city. For this Open Call, I borrowed a few of their windows.

The mural of Marilyn Monroe is my favorite in DC~

This is on the side of Mama Ayesha's restaurant. Mama Ayesha is in the middle. It is one long mural, but I couldn't get the whole shot. Here is one half~

The other half~

It is a wonderful example of art in the city, but I think President Obama looks more like Al Green here.

If you've been to DC, you've probably been to Madam's Organ.

Daniel Pearl, the American journalist who was executed in Pakistan often played his fiddle here with a Bluegrass band.

Another famous view from Adams Morgan~

More views in the city~

It's good to have a friend with a view~

Nice! I didn't know there were so many cool murals in DC.

Obama as Al Green, ha, now I'll be expecting him to break into song at his next press conference. ;-)
I love seeing the United States through others eyes. This was very cool to see, thanks!
So totally awesome, it is like a whole book, what you could share and write about these!
I love DC through your eyes. Can't wait to see it through my own, one of these old days....
Hardly dull, Joanie.

(Ahh, you have that woman's ph # ? ... ... ...)

r.
Just wonderful Joan. I never imagined Washington DC to have hip views. Great photos and a trip for us who don't live there and for those who do. Thanks! r
Jeanette, please tell me you see Al Green in the painting...

Ll2, I'm so glad you stopped by!

Sheila, that would be so much fun to do!

Jaime, I will be your personal tour guide when you come.

Jonathan, I know she's up there on 18th St.!

Thank you, Scarlett. I'm glad to see you~
Used to walk by that Marilyn mural almost daily on my way home up Connecticut Avenue, through Woodley Park and into Cleveland Park. Always liked the Adams-Morgan sites too. Wonderful.
I love these views. Murals make any view fun. Maybe you need a mural to look at. Let me know...I'll come paint one for you.
I didn't know Keith Olbermann was a president.
Joan, I think that, in the face, it still looks more like Obama than Al Green, but there's something about the body language that seems less "president" and more "soul singer".
OMG, Larry's right. That guy between Reagan and Clinton, it's Keith Olbermann!
Wendy, DC is hip. It's the politics that make it seem so un-hip! Thank you for coming by.

Mary, I think we would have been neighbors...:)

zanelle, I would LOVE to have my very own mural.

Larry, I'm pretty sure he was.

Jeanette, maybe it's the body language, but as soon as I saw that, I heard, "You Ought To Be With Me..."
Cool stuff! Sorry, my friend, but I don't see anything resembling Al Green here. I think it is a pretty good likeness of Obama, actually. What am I missing?

Lezlie
i love these pics! you'll have to be my tour guide when i come to visit :)
Entertaining. That mural at Mama Ayesha's is fantastic. The Organ/Morgan combo's pretty neat, too.
I want to eat at Mama Ayesha's. I want to go to D.C.. I think I might even want to check out that woman's organ?
Wow...I didn't see any of those when I was in DC...of course the rtisits probably weren't even born yet! I guess I need to come back!!

R
Absolutely loverly! Well done!
Lezlie, it might be just my poor eyesight, but he looks like he needs a microphone in his hand.

lemonpulp, you can count on it!

Glad you came by, Chicken Maaan!

Ann, when you come, we will have the garlic chicken (or one of their vegetarian dishes) then walk over to Madam's Organ and mingle with the very hip.

Buffy, come back, for sure!
I've never been to DC, but if I ever do......
Fantastic! Apparently i've been away much too long. I think it's the coloring of the pants and the slightly bent knees that suggest Al Green. Good call.
Creative angle and fascinating murals.
Oh Joanie, you've outdone yourself this time. Fun stuff! Don't you just love Madam's Organ? I used to perform at Columbia Station years ago, but I haven't spent much time in that area since.
Who is the artist on the last mural? Great views!
Well! A different, and very attractive, view of Washington.
I really enjoyed this view of your part of the world.
Thank you
~R~
Thanks for the pix Joan! I need to get out more.
Very cool photos! And Obama does look more like Al Greem; like Jeanette, I will now be half expecting a song. Also, you realize you have to go with me to Mama's Organ next time I'm in town. Which might be as early as April...
Ummm, that would be Madam's Organ, I guess. Which still doesn't sound right , but OK...
lived in DC over 15 years ago, these are great...
Jennifer, thank you!

Chrissie, if you ever do, you will love it.

Good Daughter, I'm so glad you see what I'm talking about.

Lea, thank you. There are so many more throughout the city!

BB, I love the whole vibe in this area. Thank you for coming by.

dianaani, I will find out. That was bad of me not to credit these artists!

Myriad, yeah, the Capitol and the White House can only be photographed just so many times before it gets really old.

M.C.S. I'm so glad you liked it. Thank you!

Bard, me too.

Laura, no, it doesn't sound right, does it? I cannot wait to see you in the Spring!
This was spectacular! I was in DC twice for a conference and didn't get to see much. A friend insisted I go to The Library of Congress and not knowing how incredible it is, fell in love with it so I took others on my second trip.

It's amazing how much beauty there is around us and we don't know about it. Thanks for bringing us such wonderful art, things I might otherwise never see.
I like street murals very much, they add color and vibrancy to buildings. It must be nice to have a friend with all these views. If you get a chance, read Nathalie Trutman's blog "My View in São Paulo". You'll be blown away what she did with the boring view from her window.
I wish I had your talent. Amazing photos. Let me just add that the view *into* your windows is beautiful.
Nice to see another side of D.C. (and your photos are ALL I've seen of it, so thank you for bringing the city to me, Joan).Mama Ayesha is the cutest one in that picture. How's the food at her restaurant?
i've never been to mama ayesha's but will make a plan for next time, thanks to your planting the idea in my head. love the marilyn mural, love love love it. excellent stuff here, joanie.
I have flown over DC and sat in Dulles airport but never seen it. I hear it's an amazing city and this art tells me everyone is right.
HUGGGGGGG
I never knew DC was so colourful. I have a whole new perspective on it now.
Oh my this is fun and so kitch at the same time. Looks like a marvelous place and reminds me of Montreal.
Wicked. You do have some good onlooking friends.
I love this other side of Washington! When I was there, I just did the classic tourist stuff and cannot imagine that there is such vibrant street art in what seemed like such a stately, deliberately clean place (I was shocked that you weren't allowed to eat or drink on the Metro!). Thanks for sharing these - I especially LOVE the Aristide Bruant one! I wish my apartment building was painted like that!
Michelle, thanks for stopping by!

mypsyche, thanks!

l'Heure Bleue, I love the Library of Congress. You are so right. There is beauty all around us.

hilarad, thanks, I will check out her post.

Mwah, Sally. Glad you liked the photos.

Margaret, the food is like someone's Mama cooked it.

Candace, isn't that mural of Marilyn the best?

Linda, I too have waited in Dulles airport for an eternity. Next time, come into the city! Parts of it really are very cool.

emma, I love to show that DC isn't just elephants and donkeys!

Algis, thank you for coming by!

Sparking, I am so glad to see you back. "Wicked" is a good word.

Alysa, I would love to live in that building too. As for not eating on the Metro, it's a good thing, although I remember a story about a teenager being arrested for eating french fries on the train years ago. That was ridiculous. I think they've calmed down a bit.
I think I'm going to faint {swoon} a positive story out of WDC!

Woo hoo! Great pixs!
I rated this last night. The photos are fabulous...
Fantastic views! I love city art and these examples are just spectacular. I've been to DC many times but never to Madam's Organ; I love live music so I'll have to check it out in the future.
Kate, it's only the politics that gives this city its bad name. :)

Leonde, thank you!

Smithery, I love city art too. I think it is fun and unexpected and very creative!
That's really cool. I'm assuming artists are commissioned to do these artworks....
I Love Life, I'm sure they are commissioned by the city, and I will give the artists credit as soon as possible!
These pictures are amazing! Thanks so much for sharing them with us. What a wonderful city you live in and what wonderful friends you have (they are so fortunate to have you).
With your talent and creative mind and this photo montage, a graphic novel is in there somewhere. :)
Upon further review, I think there is more going on in the mural than meets the eye.

Ike looks like Mikhail Gorbachev,
LBJ is carrying a purse,
George H. Bush looks like Keith Olbermann and
Obama resembles the Reverend Al Green.
I think the portrait of Keith Olbermann is supposed to be George Bush's dad. Funny how many of us have forgotten him. That must have been fun to paint, also Madam's story and half high cleavage!
Very colourful!!!!

I really do love seeing your city through your eyes, Joan. Thank you!
What a fab view, indeed. I've always loved DC but have forgotten about the terrific murals and street art in the neighborhoods that offeset the marble glories on the hallowed Mall. Thanks for htis!
Thanks, Poppi!

Aw, Mary... good to see you~

Belinda, such kind words! Many thanks~

Larry, I think he's just holding the purse for Lady Bird. Al Green, right?
Always loved Adams Morgan, I remember Marilyn and Madam's Organ and the cowboy, but had not seen the others, thanks for sharing (your friend's) view.
Wow! Incredible shots. Like Jeanette, I didn't know DC housed so many wonderful murals.

The Al Green comment...still laughing. Ha...I WISH he was more like Al Green right about now. And I didn't even know what this means.

(I'm ready for a better lit avatar for you. You have beautiful images. I've seen them. Or I'll come take some myself. Or send me the image so I can brighten it up.)
This was cool Joan. Sorry it took so long for me to get here.
@Beth, ha! are you saying I need a make-over? I would love for you to brighten me up.

Sheepie, whenever you show up, it's good.
Re: Aristide Bruant mural. Perhaps it is worth mentioning that the original was painted by M. Toulouse-Lautrec.

Merci!
I had no idea there were so many amazing murals in D.C. How very cool!

If you'd like a mural tour next time you're in Chicago, let me know.
Bike, I would love that!
Joan, you must be psychic!
