When I opened my email this morning, I saw a short message from OS:
"Bill Maher has added you as a friend."
I was so excited I went straight to his blog page to verify. Sure enough, there was my zebra swallowtail avatar listed first in his list of friends. This has made my day. I don't think any celebrity has ever made me a friend before although I have had numerous fantasies about being friends with them.
Of course, I made Bill Maher my friend first. It is not like he picked me out of a crowd to make me his friend (like when Bruce Springsteen plucked Courteney Cox out of the audience to dance with). But I was pleasantly surprised he reciprocated so promptly.
I'm a Bill Maher Fan
Real Time with Bill Maher" is on HBO every Friday night--I watch a TIVOed recording of the show the next morning. It's become a habit, similar to when I used to watch Pee-wee's Playhouse every Saturday morning in the mid 80s (before his unfortunate arrest) but back then I had to watch it live. Besides Pee-wee, my favorite character was Cowboy Curtis (Laurence Fishburne).
Bill Maher's show rocks! I enjoy how the liberal guests drown out the token conservative during the roundtable discussion. And, of course, the "New Rules" segment is always funny.
I thought for a while there Bill wouldn't have anything to talk about since Obama won. Fortunately, Rush Limbaugh has taken the place of Bush as the leader of the Republican Party. Now Bill can skewer this fresh and fat (since he got off Oxycontin) target with his sarcasm.
Note to Bill: Thank you for making me your friend. I hope our friendship lasts for a long time and I look forward to reading comments on my blog and more posts from you.

P.S. - _I_ got a personal email message from David Plotz, all same as friends here asking your to read their latest post, only he's asking me to read his latest book. He's a big-name (okay, kinda small-name) author, writes on (shhh) Slate, and has a book out about reading the bible. Like, the whole thing. (Old Testament only, on account of he's Jewish.) Gee, why would D.P. be personally emailing me...ah, it says here I rashly commented on one of his blogging-the-bible posts on Slate. Commenters' addresses get saved, I guess. Ah, the internet...one can be 'friends' with all sorts of people.
Seriously tho, it's kinda cool.
I might even read the book.
(Nah - I read his blog and it was amusing, but *enough*.)
I was thinking it might be a good idea if he sponsored a contest of some sort on OS. Maybe something like as a special person in the audience or something. I can always fantasize!
