Today we're having champagne in Salon's San Francisco office to toast Ruth Henrich, our associate managing editor, who's been working here for 10 years. That may be a Salon record: While other people may have worked here longer -- founders Gary Kamiya and Laura Miller are still with us -- they haven't worked in the bustling Salon HQ all that time. Ruth has endured tantrums, blown deadlines, bomb scares, food fights, cube-stuffing, Bill Wyman and Doug Cruickshank, and things I can't write about, even on Open Salon. She is most beloved.
I like that Salon is a place where people stick around 10 years. I like that the person who realized it was her Salonniversary and planned our celebration is one of our newest staff members, Open Salon designer Christopher Walsh.
I regret we aren't doing more for Ruth, like a trip to Rome, or a six-month sabbatical, not only because I love Ruth, but because I'd like to set the bar for this event very high -- I'll be here 10 years in October, God willing. But we'll have decent champagne.

No champagne at our house but I'll have a toast in your honor with a frozen margarita!
Cheers...
p.s.
Joan... I have to ask -- is Christorpher Walsh any relation to you?
Congratulations, Ruth. Enjoy the champagne. All I got for my 10-year anniversary was a new chamois for washing Joan's car. I guess that being nice to people and good at your job thing works out. Huh.
You are braver than I am ... I don't think I would last a week working with one of my sisters. I'm the youngest and they still have the ability to make me feel like the dorky little 'dister, though I love them dearly!
No, no. That's a joke. (I swear -- she'll hurt me if you try that.)
Yay, Ruth!
