Joan's book club: "The Clinton Tapes"

Rate: 17 Flag

No, it's not a real book club. But I tried to make lemonade out of lemons in my intellectual life: A friend got me an advance copy of Taylor Branch's intriguing "The Clinton Tapes," but my life won't allow me to sit home, plow through 700 pages, take two days to write a big review.

So I decided to blog a review -- post my thoughts as I go, every few days. I'll crosspost here for a while, too -- which may be the place where the comments are most robust.

Here's my Salon blog post.

Let me know if you think it can work, and if you're reading the book, blog along with me! Comment here or there.

Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't make sure everyone saw Caroline Hagood's moving post about Open Salon on Media Bistro. It was perfect, thanks Caroline!

Great idea.....I'll follow you anywhere, well, uh, anywhere that you write.

Looking forward to reading about it, with your insight, cuz mine is weird. I sound like a stalker.....

Seriously, send 'em on!
Hopefully it's better than the basement tapes he released last year of saxophone solos. There were a few highlights, but overall it was a pedestrian effort.
very much looking forward to this.
Looking forward to your updates. Now off to read Caroline's post.
The new republicans--neoconservatives+right wing Evangelicals--have one voice. They give the exact same answers and chant the exact same slogans. Whether it is a right wing think-tank, any republican congressman, any republican woman at grocery store, and any republican farmer on a tractor in any state, interviewed at the same time, they will all give the exact same answer to the same question. This is malicious.

This is the result of misinformation, anti-intellectualism, anti-rationalism, and religious fundamentalism supported by big money. Big money is very powerful and it owns the media.

This is a very crucial time in our history as a nation. Our priorities/speech/slogans must change in favor of social justice. I believe that those who want reform must organize and fight as viciously as those who do not.

Rated.
Jeez, Joan. I'm unemployed and I don't have time to sit down with 700 pages. Just go to Fox News and get the short twisted version and post about that. ;-)
Super - will follow this with interest. Thanks for taking that effort.
Caroline's endorsement of OS was great.

Happy reading!
When I saw President Clinton on Late Night with David Letterman, I thought again, as I did so many times before, that it is a shame that his personal life and politics got in the way then. I look forward to reading the book.
Hi Joan.. Although I admired/admire Clinton I think I'll just skip the book and check out your reporting.

The Caroline Hagood piece.... very cool!
Great post from Caroline -- seems to have her finger on the pulse of OS!
Yes, Joan, please do tell us about the book. I may not have the opportunity to read it myself, so I'll follow your posts about it.

And thanks for including Caroline Hagood's post! She says what I've come to believe about this incredible site. And, of course, she says it very well.

Read on, McWalsh, read on! D
Your opening thoughts, especially Clinton's words, took me back to that time with such intensity I felt my anger and frustration rise along with Bill's --and yours-- as I read, and remembered.

Nothing has changed.. and the media are even worse panderers now! Obama's mired in it already. I wonder if he's reading Branch's book. He'd be wise at least to read your reviews. I like this format, Joan, not sure my BP could take too much more at one sitting.
Joan, is the book our yet for us mortals?
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it.
Two days to read 700 pages and write a review. You go girl if you can do that I am impressed
Great idea and I don't even have to read the book because you do such a good job of outlining it for me -- and good too that you be a bit more patient with our new guy who has even more on his plate to deal with than Clinton.
Joan, I'm the Open Salon "day late and a dollar short" gal except that, of course, by now that's a lot more than just one day and one dollar.

But I _really_ _am_ trying to keep up with your thoughts and reasons for starting this thread despite my just-now-posted bit of >"drear"? after reading almost the entire number of posts to "the other Salon" responding to your latest post here.

I _do_ "love people" (and noted with amusement and appreciation how often your latest post used that word "love" till I was wondering whether I ought to send you a thesaurus? -- just a friendly josh, Joan!) but I confess the ... ahem ... ?"tone of discourse"? of that letters thread sure was getting me down.... :-(

Had to update my username and password because, you know, some of us oldtimers have a hard time keeping track in our computers of those stats while trying to use the computers to keep track of our bills, payments, debts, and all that ?fun stuff?

But here I am now, back TA DA!! So I hope you'll keep posting here at OS as well as in the main pages because it would cheer me immensely to find more of the discussion here.

"Keep on truckin'", Joan! :-)

I like that idea, Joan.

Like a book-journal.
700 pages takes me a vacation - minimum. I can't wait to see the rest. And, thanks for the link to Caroline's piece - that was touching.
Just ordered my copy now...I decided it was worth it due to all the parallels to where we are at, again, as you pointed out.

The R.S. interview was a riot - thanks! Hope to catch up.

I will die laughing if you review "Going Rogue." Having spent over a decade in Alaska myself, I have a curious insight into Palin so I am actually dying to read it (and then use for kindling).

Thanks for motivating me...
I'm following with interest, thanks.
Seems like one to look forward to. but why wait so long? he's been out of office nearly 10 years!
Great article. Please continue reading and commenting.
