The Ballad of GenX (Poetry Warning)

Rate: 13 Flag

I am totally tubular.

I would be the one pretending to sing into a highlighter.
Do NOT miss the stonewashed, pleated jeans.
My friend Dasha is blameless.
Except for the hair.
1987, in case you're curious.

The Ballad of GenX

(stay tuned after the show for visual interpretation)

Sit down, my children, gather near,
I have a tale to tell,
of times gone by and yesteryear,
I trust you’ll like it well.

When I was young, about your height,
we didn’t have a care.
we ate sweets, rode bikes at night,
and took every double dare.

We played Atari, watched TV,
and read the “Weekly Reader.”
Our tests were few, our summers long,
I’ll argue we were freer.

We got dirty, swam and played,
No play date was required.
Building forts and getting tan,
we came home when we got tired.

I miss those days, I’d have them back,
I wonder what transpired
to cause the dark and mortal fears
in which our kids are mired?

Our world was safe, our planet sound,
the Reds our only fear.
They lay sleeping underground,
more docile with each year.

I turned fourteen, the wall came down,
and things have sure improved!
Helmets and Splenda, Prozac and perverts,
we’re now too scared to move.

There are no risks out there today
there weren’t when we were new.
That’s why I mourn and sing and sigh
for Nineteen Eighty-Two.

Please, please, please let me get what I want

I am, like, totally bumping this, dude.
(tubular! radical! awesome! dude!)
Some good stuff here.
Scruffus - I wrote this for my kids. It made them laugh.
Most of what I say makes them laugh.
It should be bumped 'til it's jumped.

I can so totally agree, Jodi. Totally.

"The world has moved on....", and that's not always a good thing.
Bill - "Bumped 'til it's jumped" very cute!
I don't know, I'm not railing against the injustices of the world today. I'm tired. Railing takes a lot out of me.
Maybe I just subconsciously wanted to look at Lloyd & Duckie today.
These are priceless and joyifying! I am joyful now and for that I am grateful. I'm also swirling with fun memories.

Damn, I DIG those skates ;)
And that photo of you is fabulous. Thank you for having the nerve to share it ;)
Susan - I was BORN to dig those skates!
As for the photo, that wasn't brave at all! See how skinny I was?!?
If I could have that body back, I'd gladly have "birdcage bangs" again! Glad you enjoyed it.
Susan - My only regret is that I have no video of my 12 year old self roller skating to Another One Bites the Dust. THAT would be magic.
Wonderful!!

Lloyd Dobler. I want to date Lloyd. He was perfect.
Ohh. And the theme to our Homecoming my senior year was ...

Another One Bites the Dust.

Ha.
Odette - I'm on Team Lloyd, too. These guys were SO underappreciated. The only theme I remember is "Moonlight and Magnolias" from our senior prom. But, I was in Pensacola. There was no love for Queen. That's okay, though. Two weeks before that prom I got to see Brian May open for Guns N Roses. Awesome!
I got to see "Queen" (Just Brian and Roger with the lead singer of Bad Company) when they came through Jax. It was a decent show, but nothing like seeing Freddie. If I had a time machine, I'd go to the Kind of Magic show at Wembley. That was just the best. Or Live Aid. Live Aid was a pivotal moment for our generation.

I really enjoyed doing this post. I just needed some time out from the screaming, 'ya know?

Plus, nothing beats Lloyd and Duckie.

Nothing.
