Help Me Name My New Puppy, Please!

Rate: 37 Flag

Awww!

I believe we have finally found our new puppy!

The Man wanted another Schnauzer because our previous Schnauzer, Wembley, was The Best Dog Ever©. We've decided to go a  new route and not get a puppy bought out of a cardboard box this time. Also, the BigGirlChild has asthma, so we had to stick to only a few breeds.

I've been combing the rescue and pound sites since Schnitzel died, hoping to hit the lottery and find a litter of Schnauzers. (The littery?) But, as the President knows all too well, pound dogs are not usually hypoallergenic.

I am proud to say that we've found a very nice, very SANE Miniature Schnauzer breeder. In light of our problems with dog longitivity, it was very comforting to have our puppy's 13 year old great-grandmother happy, healthy and doing tricks while we were visiting with the breeder.

I am hoping that I will never again have to explain to a crying toddler that her dog died. The SmallGirlChild has said, "I want to go live with Jesus and Schnitzel" repeatedly these last few weeks. I don't want to go through that again.

So, on to the happy part! If the breeder accepts our application, one of these puppies will be ours! Yes, I have to be approved. The breeder cares so much about these little guys that she asks owners to put her in their will in case no one wants the dog if they die. (!) I am confident, though. I plan on plying them with The Man's barbeque ribs when they come to check out the house.

So, help me name this puppy!

The Man and The Doglet

There is a puppy in that photo somewhere.
He is a BOY puppy.

Guidelines:
We are a creepy bunch of people. At the moment, "Ouija" is the kids' favorite entry. Normally, I pronounce this as "Wee-Ja" but I think it sounds better for a boy doggie pronounced "Wee-Gee".

So, we're looking for creepy, literary, ghost related, gothtacular and/or German names. (The Man's family is German and he trains them with German commands. That's hot.)

Of course, all entries will be considered. The day I get the call from the breeder saying our application is accepted, I will announce the winner.

One last picture!

I'm bumpifying this with Cartouche's Second Puppy Love blog because she is spiffy and I ::lurve:: her.
WAAAAH!!! Jodi got a puppy!!!!!! OK, going back to read now...
Oh, to clarify... The puppies are only two weeks old in these pictures. We have to wait until they are 10 weeks old to actually POSSESS the puppy.
Congrats on the new pup. I'll give the name thing some thought. How much time do we have? I used Google to name my newest dog. We put a lot of thought into it. How about Miles after Miles Davis? Rated
Jodi - he is one cute pup! Watch him for a week or so and see what his personality is like. If he is full of mischief, I suggest Flip Wilson. I honor of that great comedian.

I had a tri-colored Pembroke Welsh Corgi and as a puppy he was always doing goofy and silly things. Flip fit him to a tee!

Post more pictures please, as he grows.

I'm liking Damien Hurst. Damien for short. No omen, just a good, Germanic sounding name! Thanks for thelink (but where the hell was your thumb....?)

I'm so happy for you Jodie!!! We may have to discuss Jville on the return. I'll pm you later. Thumbed for puppielishisness and puppy breath!
How precious! I wanted a black mini schnauzer so badly but wasn't able to find one. He is so adorable. Schnauzers (other than Shelby!) are such good dogs so I'm so happy to see that's what you've chosen.

As far as names go, here's a stream of consciousness listing: Edward (for Scissorhands or Cullen), Barnabas (Collins - Dark Shadows!), and whatever the German name would be for "Dark," "Black," or "Night." Although Ouija is cute, too.

I'm happy for all of you!
Precious! My submission: Zeitgeist. (We just got a new puppy in September and his name is Obie-short for Obama).
I can't help you with a name,
Because all I have are lame,
Dexter, Merlin, Rufus, and Jet,
Are all the names you're gonna get.

Rated.
oh I know, I know ... VLAD!!!

VLAD the Puppy ... he is all dressed in black and what a prince he is :)

I want to smoochy, smoochy his little nose against my neck ... aaaaawwwwwwwwwwww ... puppy smell !!!!!!! THE BEST EVAH!!!

So, I'm going with VLAD ... did I mention that???
so proud for you Jodi. Another dog. It looks so sweet. i can't help you name him. I wish I could. i am just happy to hear you have him. I know you will care for him.
Keep us posted, my friend
Blue - Interesting. Miles also has that "two year old with a hat and suspenders" vibe I enjoy. ::slow nod::

gm - AW! I LOVE Flip! Personality always figures into it for us. We'll be visiting with the little guy as much as we can before we actually take him home, so that will be part of the decision.

Toochie - I went back and thumbed you. Not enough coffee yet. Damien is already on the list, shockingly. Hee hee hee

Lisa - The black ones seem to have better personalities, in my limited and humble opinion. Of course, when we bought our van, the salesman asked the SmallGirlChild how she liked the one we test drove. She said, "Does it come in black?" That's the family motto - along with "The red stuff stays on the inside."

MB - I like it. "Zeit" for short. On the list it goes.

OE - Not bad and in verse. Thankies!

Jane - Jaeger is already a strong front runner! ;)

Mom - Oh, I snurfled the HELL out of that little fluffernutter! I like Vlad!

Mission - Thanks! :)
squirrel - The SmallGirlChild's stuffed kitten is already inexplicably named Bowser. I do not think she would allow such an affront to her kitty.

Jane - I KNOW! Hims is so pwecious!
This is going to be the one I dress in Halloween costumes. I can already tell.
but ... BOWSER THE SCHNAUZER!!!

all right fine. be that way. but ... i'll think of something.
Balthazar? Boris? Diabolical? Derik? hee hee Okay, not the last one.

Actually, I kind of like Irritated Mother's choice. Vlad's not bad. It's rather rad. That I'm rhyming is a tad sad.
Jodi,
Given that my dissertation stuff was on witchraft, might I suggest Hexer. (It's the German word for a male witch.) Hexe is the feminine, and the activity (witchcraft) is known as Hexen. Each seem appropriate to a crafty little black dog.
oh my. german stuff is creepy to me. no idea but heavens to murgatroid or something is in my brain.
I would suggest "Atticus" which speaks of dignity and grace. {rated}
Spike! For - you know - Spike! Or Giles.
squirrel - I have no doubt. I wait with great anticipation.

odette - Boris goes on the list!

Lorraine - We used babelfish to look for whatever words The Man didn't know in German and hexe came up, but not in the male form. I think "Hex" for short would be cute.

Theodora - Precisely. ;)

Geezer - Ooh! I LOVE Atticus!

Mumbles - I think I like Giles for the same reason I like Miles. This is going to be a very hard choice...
One more reason to go with my suggestion:

When those teensy tiny little razor sharp teeth fall out and you step on one that's hidden in the carpet, you can scream, "VLAD ~ you impaled me!!!"

It's a good idea ~ I'm tellin' ya!!!
I guess Hitler's out, huh? I mean, those nice people already named their kid that.

Since I am half German, we have lots of names to choose from. My grandmother's maiden name was Mueller. I think that would make a good dog name. Then, when you called him, you could go, "Mueller? Mueller?"
What an adorable puppy. I vote for the kids naming him "Wee-Gee." When the dog gets to be 13, they can explain it to their friends.
He looks like a Helmut to me:) (Hell-Mutt, even if he is purebred)
So freakin' CUTE!!!!!!
Okay Jodi, I have 3 submissions and they are, (in no specific order),
1)alaric- german for noble king
2)kaiser-german for ceasar
3)bruno- because that was my doberman's name, and he was the best dog
I ever had. Please pick me , please Jodi, please. Rated
p.s. I'll pay ya, if you pick my choice! I'll be your best friend!
He is sooooo cute!

Vlad is good - Mother is on fire. I'd probably vote for that but I did think of Werner (just like the sound of it, immediately popped into my head) and Cullen (for Cologne).
Mom - Wood floors are even worse than carpet for that! Ouch!

P.F. - Yeah, I vetoed Adolf. LOL

ikilledhiswife- Oh, The Man will LOVE Hell-Mutt. Unfortunately, probably not kidfriendly. ;)

junk - We frown upon bribery here. ::wink wink::
OMG he's ADORABLE! I don't know if I can help with German or "dark" names, but I'll give it a thought. A friend of mine has a dog named Guinness.
jen - Guinness is already on the list. ;)
Hansel, "Hans" to you and his friends

because:
1. its very german
2. hansel and gretel riff is just precious
3. he will be Clever Hans once the man trains him
4. "Hans, get in here!" has good hard chi (say it loud to feel it)

We used number 4 to help name our kid!
I must now leave for the dentist.
My teeth are rotting because of the uber cuteness of baby things.
I vote for Helmut. So cool in so many ways.
Completely ADORABLE.

What about Edgar?

As in Poe?

Moriarty?
Sobaka - rhymes with Chewbacca and means dog in Russian.
Malchik -- means boy in Russian
I have black Labs. My male I named Fred and for his show name he is called Frith von Naicht, Frith is the old teutonic root name of Fred, it means "peace" and Naicht it german for night. You're welcome to it.
Such cuteness! I'm asking my literary daughter (RedheadedGaijin) for ideas - she'll post later.
First of all, I really hope you pass all the puppy-buying tests. I think I'd need valium to get through that. [I just visited the pound on Sat. looking for a puppy who won't get bigger than 15 lbs. All they had was older huge dogs, so I put in my application to be called if a litter ever comes in] I want to buy a purebread but my Man wants a freebie pound dog. My name suggestion, not german: Tiki Barber.
How about naming him "Blue". He's black so people would always be perplexed!

I was thinking literary that Poe wrote the Raven so since both names are equated with darkness, Poe or Raven.

Or if you really want to screw with minds, call him Snowflake.
Puppy licks for everyone!!! I'm no good at names. I once had a cat named Booger and your new stinker deserves better than that. You will pass your inspection by Mother Serious Compassion with flying colors! Congrates on the new addition to the Kasten Klan!
I submit "Eichhörnchen" for consideration. It is German for a certain tree-dwelling rodent who also has a place in every OS poster's heart.
Oh my God! That is so precious!

Hmm, ghost-related things... I tried to think of famous ghosts from stories and poems, but I'm blanking. (For some reason I'm stuck on Poe this afternoon, but you can't name a boy puppy Lenore.) I ended up wracking my brain for folklore-related stuff instead. Kelpie is kind of cute, but it's all I can think of. I'll think about this more!
Someone suggesting Miles made me think of "Coltrane" - a cool name plus since he's coal black.... and you can always call him "trane" for short.
BTW, despite your request for Germanic names, I ruled out suggesting "Goethe".
BTW, I read something recently about dog names and there were some suggestions based on sounds that work and don't work for dogs. e.g., you don't want an "s" sound in the dog's name as it sounds like a snake hissing and dogs (and cats) hate that. I can't remember the other tips but you could probably find some help like that online.
I thought of Hesse - which gets you Hermann, Siddartha, Demien (already in the list), Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund. A miniature schnauzer named Steppenwolf and called "Wolfie" - that makes me smile.

You may want to ask the breeder if she wants all of the litter to have a name that starts with the same letter - some do.
Okay. After some consideration I've decided that as long as we are on dog naming, I will surrender my two perfect names for a Jack Russell Terrier couple. It's not likely that I will ever own one, let alone two JRTs, so here they are:

Male: Fizzlethorpe Bristlebane, the Tunerian god of fun; a name rich with possibilities for ohsocute nicknames: Fizz, Fizzy, Bristle, etc., etc., etc.

Female: Flossy Beanblossom, the name of an actual member of the credit union I worked at in my younger days. Flossy goes well with Fizzy, too.

Anyway. There they are, out in the public domain, yours for the taking, completely free of charge. No requirement that they be used exclusively for JRTs, either. Name your poodles, your basset hounds, your corgis, your cats, your hamsters, your cars, your kids for God's sake. I don't care. I divest myself of any interest in the names from this day forward dammit.
Kudos for finding what sounds like an excellent breeder!
I really like Vlad...but I'll throw in "Sabbath" as in Black Sabbath. None of my dogs ever had issues with "ssssssssss".
Oh my - This is what I get for sitting down and reading!
Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions!

Elizabeth - I "scream tested" all my children's names. I concur.

Persephone - "Edgar" has been added to the list. We had Poe, but didn't think of it.

Malusinka - Very cool!

Stellaa - We've had a Schatzi in the family already, but Kafka is BRILLIANT!

Blue - Yeah, we could name him Albino Elephant or something! Hee hee hee!

coogansbluf - prune. prune? prune. wow.

Sui - If I could spell that, the squirrel would have a German relation. Sweet!

Silkstone - Believe it or not, "Faust" is in the running. ;)

kh & sui - He will have a longer registration name, I think with "Shangri-La's" in front of it. I considered "Budda" because of that.
If we name him Ouija, it'll be "It's Just a Game" or "Mystical Divination". If I name him after the squirrel, we'll have to rethink that. Perhaps "Trust Me Baby, Trust Me". ;) If I name the dog that, I get serious OS hit points, right?
These are no brainers, but Damien, Manitou, and Nosferatu would work. The creepiest name I save for last: Hasselhoff.

Your welcome.
Dr. Wonderful suggests "Renfield" - Dracula's sidekick!
That dog is a "Butch" if I ever saw one.
Awww . . .Congrats Mama! Here are some names that popped up when I saw the pics: Buzz, Chaucer, and Hammy . . . I know they're weird, :) I like Chaucer!
Ach Mein Gott! CUTE overload! But a puppy just isn't in my future.... But that is one cute little fella.

My name recommendation scribbled onto a slip of paper and tossed into the hat is Orestes.
Wolfgang--Wolfie for short. This is the middle name of Goethe and the first name of Mozart, as I'm sure you know. Otto could be in there somewhere. Wolfgang Otto Kasten (WOK)????
CHAUCER! Deliver me from Chaucer! THREE SEMESTERS!!!
Three.
Three semesters of Chaucer.

I don't know what I was thinking.
Hopefully we'll hear next week. Let us all collectively cross our fingers!
For the adorable puppy - Fritzengruber - very German, kind of funny/cute and shortens nicely to Fritzy.
Random thoughts - Raven, Poe, Darkling, Hund, Welpe, Schwarz, Grufti, Geist

And for silliness sake, I suggest… Pooty Woofington

He is too adorable.
Suggestions:
Mephistopheles – Meth for short
Agamemnon – Aggie
Orpheus – if he “sings”
And from the Watchmen:
Rorschach – Rorsh (sounds like something he hurked up)
Ozymandias – Ozzy
Jodi, until recently I had a cat named Blackie and a cat named Whitie. So I will spare you my suggestions. (Actually they were formally Smudge and Allegro, but no one ever called them anything but Blackie and Whitie.) But your pup pup is adorable, hope you get him! I had to do the "convincing the breeder" dance to get my new Siamese kitten, it's nerve-wracking!

Oh hey, I do have a gothtacular name - Varney. One of the first literary vampires. Or Ruthven.
Schwarzwald, Waldi for short, which is the German equivalent of Fido.

Bismarck, for Providence watches over fools, drunkards, and the United States of America.

Get two puppies and name them Sturm and Drang.
I like "Ol' Scratch", especially since he'll be so young. + it's kind "Ol' Yeller" without having to switch to a labrador...
Cornbread. Pronounced Conebread.
Oh, I forgot, Lothar. These are all names I would use, but hubby is allergic to everything furry (except himself).
For a gloomy German name, how about "Pech" ? It literally means "misfortune," but it's also used to describe the color black, kind of like the way we say "fire-engine red" in English. The Germans say "pechschwarz" (misfortune black). Creepy plus a pun. Downside is pronouncing the German "ch" -- still easier than Eichhoernchen though.
Puppy love to you and yours! Here are some choices with their translations:
A) Kugel: Ball
B) Dieter: Army of the People
C) Ansel: Fortunate One
TOUCH MY MONKEY!!!

... better now.
Orca. Puck. Truffle. Pugsley (Pugsley Schnauzer! How cute is that!) Koko (After Koko the signing gorilla. She's a girl, but he won't know.) You're welcome. Oh wait, you wanted creepy. Or German. On second thought, I got nothin'!
Hey, Pugsley is the boy in the Addam's Family!
That's something.
On the list with it!
Yes! I thought of Lurch and Gomez too, but Pugsley seemed the best by far. I hope it wins I hope it wins I hope it wins ::closing eyes, clicking heels::

Though Atticus is a fine, fine name too.
Sorry Jodi.. forgot about Mike Myers and Dieter. The other two names (Kugel and Ansel) are semi-normal...I think!
That is a cute puppy.

I am unimagintive with puppy names and called Tyler's Christmas puppy "Buddy" because that is his job ;0). A long time ago I named a lab retriever "Jupilene" after the name of a bank teller in Tallahassee. We never told her we thought her name was a perfect dog name.
Bozart
Frisco
Olivier
Shadrach
Sandra & Karin - LOL! Those are GREAT! Shadrach is AWESOME! OLIVIER!

Pfullendorf(!) BWAH!!!
My favorite German is named Detlef! He is a handsome, talented fellow. My nickname for him is Def Leopard which is kind of ironic because Detlef is an opera singer and Def Leopard is, well you know.
The ultimate Black Dog name - Pooka! Pooh for short. Convertible to Poohbah, Poopy, Poopet, Poopcake, Pooh...
Mumbles - Ach! Gotta nix that one. The SmallGirlChild is referred to most often as "Pookie" - "Pook" and/or "The Pooker".
Gris

Maslo

Lazlo

Beelz

Betelguese

Lyger

Roc or Rok

Rocco

Griffon

Volga

Chiaroscuro

Chimera

Azul

Hippogrif

Manticore

Wendigo
"Wendigo" did well shouted across the house to The Man.
"Thor" is a possibility.
Bogart (the wonder dog) Bogey for short
Swartz
Yukon
Bubba Boy
Sly
Harrison
Oscar
I like Bogey or Yukon the best
Schnickelfritz (Fritzi for short, or Schnickers, or Schnickerdoodle...)

Eldritch (well, you're English, right? And Andrew Eldritch was about as dark as you can get, with that sepulchural voice...)

Nephilim (also dark dark dark guys)

Budgie (did I mention I'm a big Siouxsie fan? And since he's a boy....?)

I also like ironic names. You know, like Moose. Or Bruno. Or Bruiser. That's hysterical for a little dog.

BTW, dogs respond best to names of at least 2 syllables.

I do like Wolfgang/Wolfie. You could name him Oz (Ozzie) for our favorite werewolf, or Charles Gunn who didn't know enough to keep his blood on the inside...or, if you want to get more esoteric, August (the actor's middle name), could be called Augie. Maybe William? Willie is a good German name (Wilmar and William--my two grandfathers' names), and less obvious than Spike...
Schadenfreude. Schady for short.
"Schadenfreude" is now STRONGLY in the running!!!
Faust.

The protagonist of German legend.

Latin for "auspicious" or "lucky."
What a cute puppy! But don't ask me to suggest names, I'm pants at that. The last time my family had puppies in the household there were two boys and two bitches. My sister named the bitches Pandy and Gabby. I named the boys Baldrick and Ianto.
OK you can't name it Wendigo. Go look it up. Bad juju.
