I believe we have finally found our new puppy!
The Man wanted another Schnauzer because our previous Schnauzer, Wembley, was The Best Dog Ever©. We've decided to go a new route and not get a puppy bought out of a cardboard box this time. Also, the BigGirlChild has asthma, so we had to stick to only a few breeds.
I've been combing the rescue and pound sites since Schnitzel died, hoping to hit the lottery and find a litter of Schnauzers. (The littery?) But, as the President knows all too well, pound dogs are not usually hypoallergenic.
I am proud to say that we've found a very nice, very SANE Miniature Schnauzer breeder. In light of our problems with dog longitivity, it was very comforting to have our puppy's 13 year old great-grandmother happy, healthy and doing tricks while we were visiting with the breeder.
I am hoping that I will never again have to explain to a crying toddler that her dog died. The SmallGirlChild has said, "I want to go live with Jesus and Schnitzel" repeatedly these last few weeks. I don't want to go through that again.
So, on to the happy part! If the breeder accepts our application, one of these puppies will be ours! Yes, I have to be approved. The breeder cares so much about these little guys that she asks owners to put her in their will in case no one wants the dog if they die. (!) I am confident, though. I plan on plying them with The Man's barbeque ribs when they come to check out the house.
So, help me name this puppy!
There is a puppy in that photo somewhere.
He is a BOY puppy.
Guidelines:
We are a creepy bunch of people. At the moment, "Ouija" is the kids' favorite entry. Normally, I pronounce this as "Wee-Ja" but I think it sounds better for a boy doggie pronounced "Wee-Gee".
So, we're looking for creepy, literary, ghost related, gothtacular and/or German names. (The Man's family is German and he trains them with German commands. That's hot.)
Of course, all entries will be considered. The day I get the call from the breeder saying our application is accepted, I will announce the winner.
One last picture!

I had a tri-colored Pembroke Welsh Corgi and as a puppy he was always doing goofy and silly things. Flip fit him to a tee!
Post more pictures please, as he grows.

I'm so happy for you Jodie!!! We may have to discuss Jville on the return. I'll pm you later. Thumbed for puppielishisness and puppy breath!
As far as names go, here's a stream of consciousness listing: Edward (for Scissorhands or Cullen), Barnabas (Collins - Dark Shadows!), and whatever the German name would be for "Dark," "Black," or "Night." Although Ouija is cute, too.
I'm happy for all of you!
Because all I have are lame,
Dexter, Merlin, Rufus, and Jet,
Are all the names you're gonna get.

VLAD the Puppy ... he is all dressed in black and what a prince he is :)
I want to smoochy, smoochy his little nose against my neck ... aaaaawwwwwwwwwwww ... puppy smell !!!!!!! THE BEST EVAH!!!
So, I'm going with VLAD ... did I mention that???
Keep us posted, my friend
gm - AW! I LOVE Flip! Personality always figures into it for us. We'll be visiting with the little guy as much as we can before we actually take him home, so that will be part of the decision.
Toochie - I went back and thumbed you. Not enough coffee yet. Damien is already on the list, shockingly. Hee hee hee
Lisa - The black ones seem to have better personalities, in my limited and humble opinion. Of course, when we bought our van, the salesman asked the SmallGirlChild how she liked the one we test drove. She said, "Does it come in black?" That's the family motto - along with "The red stuff stays on the inside."
MB - I like it. "Zeit" for short. On the list it goes.
OE - Not bad and in verse. Thankies!
Jane - Jaeger is already a strong front runner! ;)
Mom - Oh, I snurfled the HELL out of that little fluffernutter! I like Vlad!
Mission - Thanks! :)
Jane - I KNOW! Hims is so pwecious!
This is going to be the one I dress in Halloween costumes. I can already tell.
all right fine. be that way. but ... i'll think of something.
Actually, I kind of like Irritated Mother's choice. Vlad's not bad. It's rather rad. That I'm rhyming is a tad sad.
Given that my dissertation stuff was on witchraft, might I suggest Hexer. (It's the German word for a male witch.) Hexe is the feminine, and the activity (witchcraft) is known as Hexen. Each seem appropriate to a crafty little black dog.
odette - Boris goes on the list!
Lorraine - We used babelfish to look for whatever words The Man didn't know in German and hexe came up, but not in the male form. I think "Hex" for short would be cute.
Theodora - Precisely. ;)
Geezer - Ooh! I LOVE Atticus!
Mumbles - I think I like Giles for the same reason I like Miles. This is going to be a very hard choice...
When those teensy tiny little razor sharp teeth fall out and you step on one that's hidden in the carpet, you can scream, "VLAD ~ you impaled me!!!"
It's a good idea ~ I'm tellin' ya!!!
Since I am half German, we have lots of names to choose from. My grandmother's maiden name was Mueller. I think that would make a good dog name. Then, when you called him, you could go, "Mueller? Mueller?"
So freakin' CUTE!!!!!!
1)alaric- german for noble king
2)kaiser-german for ceasar
3)bruno- because that was my doberman's name, and he was the best dog
I ever had. Please pick me , please Jodi, please. Rated
p.s. I'll pay ya, if you pick my choice! I'll be your best friend!
Vlad is good - Mother is on fire. I'd probably vote for that but I did think of Werner (just like the sound of it, immediately popped into my head) and Cullen (for Cologne).
P.F. - Yeah, I vetoed Adolf. LOL
ikilledhiswife- Oh, The Man will LOVE Hell-Mutt. Unfortunately, probably not kidfriendly. ;)
junk - We frown upon bribery here. ::wink wink::
because:
1. its very german
2. hansel and gretel riff is just precious
3. he will be Clever Hans once the man trains him
4. "Hans, get in here!" has good hard chi (say it loud to feel it)
We used number 4 to help name our kid!
My teeth are rotting because of the uber cuteness of baby things.
I vote for Helmut. So cool in so many ways.
What about Edgar?
As in Poe?
Moriarty?
Malchik -- means boy in Russian
I was thinking literary that Poe wrote the Raven so since both names are equated with darkness, Poe or Raven.
Or if you really want to screw with minds, call him Snowflake.
Hmm, ghost-related things... I tried to think of famous ghosts from stories and poems, but I'm blanking. (For some reason I'm stuck on Poe this afternoon, but you can't name a boy puppy Lenore.) I ended up wracking my brain for folklore-related stuff instead. Kelpie is kind of cute, but it's all I can think of. I'll think about this more!
You may want to ask the breeder if she wants all of the litter to have a name that starts with the same letter - some do.
Male: Fizzlethorpe Bristlebane, the Tunerian god of fun; a name rich with possibilities for ohsocute nicknames: Fizz, Fizzy, Bristle, etc., etc., etc.
Female: Flossy Beanblossom, the name of an actual member of the credit union I worked at in my younger days. Flossy goes well with Fizzy, too.
Anyway. There they are, out in the public domain, yours for the taking, completely free of charge. No requirement that they be used exclusively for JRTs, either. Name your poodles, your basset hounds, your corgis, your cats, your hamsters, your cars, your kids for God's sake. I don't care. I divest myself of any interest in the names from this day forward dammit.
I really like Vlad...but I'll throw in "Sabbath" as in Black Sabbath. None of my dogs ever had issues with "ssssssssss".
Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions!
Elizabeth - I "scream tested" all my children's names. I concur.
Persephone - "Edgar" has been added to the list. We had Poe, but didn't think of it.
Malusinka - Very cool!
Stellaa - We've had a Schatzi in the family already, but Kafka is BRILLIANT!
Blue - Yeah, we could name him Albino Elephant or something! Hee hee hee!
coogansbluf - prune. prune? prune. wow.
Sui - If I could spell that, the squirrel would have a German relation. Sweet!
Silkstone - Believe it or not, "Faust" is in the running. ;)
kh & sui - He will have a longer registration name, I think with "Shangri-La's" in front of it. I considered "Budda" because of that.
If we name him Ouija, it'll be "It's Just a Game" or "Mystical Divination". If I name him after the squirrel, we'll have to rethink that. Perhaps "Trust Me Baby, Trust Me". ;) If I name the dog that, I get serious OS hit points, right?
Your welcome.
My name recommendation scribbled onto a slip of paper and tossed into the hat is Orestes.
Three.
Three semesters of Chaucer.
I don't know what I was thinking.
And for silliness sake, I suggest… Pooty Woofington
He is too adorable.
Mephistopheles – Meth for short
Agamemnon – Aggie
Orpheus – if he “sings”
And from the Watchmen:
Rorschach – Rorsh (sounds like something he hurked up)
Ozymandias – Ozzy
Oh hey, I do have a gothtacular name - Varney. One of the first literary vampires. Or Ruthven.
Bismarck, for Providence watches over fools, drunkards, and the United States of America.
Get two puppies and name them Sturm and Drang.
A) Kugel: Ball
B) Dieter: Army of the People
C) Ansel: Fortunate One
... better now.
That's something.
On the list with it!
Though Atticus is a fine, fine name too.
I am unimagintive with puppy names and called Tyler's Christmas puppy "Buddy" because that is his job ;0). A long time ago I named a lab retriever "Jupilene" after the name of a bank teller in Tallahassee. We never told her we thought her name was a perfect dog name.

I like Bogey or Yukon the best
Eldritch (well, you're English, right? And Andrew Eldritch was about as dark as you can get, with that sepulchural voice...)
Nephilim (also dark dark dark guys)
Budgie (did I mention I'm a big Siouxsie fan? And since he's a boy....?)
I also like ironic names. You know, like Moose. Or Bruno. Or Bruiser. That's hysterical for a little dog.
BTW, dogs respond best to names of at least 2 syllables.
I do like Wolfgang/Wolfie. You could name him Oz (Ozzie) for our favorite werewolf, or Charles Gunn who didn't know enough to keep his blood on the inside...or, if you want to get more esoteric, August (the actor's middle name), could be called Augie. Maybe William? Willie is a good German name (Wilmar and William--my two grandfathers' names), and less obvious than Spike...
The protagonist of German legend.
Latin for "auspicious" or "lucky."
