No Balloons - Missing Child In Jacksonville (UPDATED)

Rate: 38 Flag
Somer Renee Thompson

UPDATE:
The body of a small child has been found in a landfill in Folkston, Georgia. It is being assumed that it is the body of Somer Thompson by the media here in Jacksonville. My thoughts and prayers are with Somer's family.

Somer Renee Thompson disappeared yesterday near her school in Orange Park, Florida. (A suburb of Jacksonville.) The Clay County Sheriff's Office says it is asking for information about a blue sedan seen in the neighborhood 10 days ago. Authorities say the occupants, two men and a woman, tried to lure a young girl into the car. (This issue has been resolved and the Sheriff is no longer searching for this car.)

The little girl hasn't been seen since Monday afternoon.  The girl's mother notified the sheriff's office around 5 p.m. that her daughter had not returned home from school.

Thompson is a second-grader at Grove Park Elementary. Police say she is a white female, 3 feet 5 inches tall and about 65 pounds.  She has brown hair and was last seen wearing a cranberry colored jumpsuit with pink striped sleeves.

She was last seen at 2:45 p.m. walking home from school near West Gano Avenue and Debarry Avenue. [Map it]

She was with her brother and friends, but separated from them, running ahead towards her home.

She's only seven years old. Please take a good look at her, even if you are not in the Jacksonville area. By now, she could be anywhere within 12 hours driving distance. I can make it to NYC in 12 hours.

Anyone with information on Thompson is asked to call 911, or the CCSO non-emergency line at (904) 264-6512.  You can also call First Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS. You will remain anonymous and could receive a cash reward of up to $1,000.

No jokes and no Latin today. I am blatantly taking advantage of the eyeballs that visit my blog. If you're in the south, take a good, hard look at little Somer.

If only we could garner as much attention when a child is lost legitimately as when it's for a reality show.

Light and love for Somer and her family.
Ah crap, I hate stories like these. I hope they find her. Rated for the eyeballs!
Taking a good hard look at her, and joining you in the light and love . . .
I'm extremely frustrated. The Amber Alert wasn't issued until this morning because there is no car or tag number. I'll be posting more info here if they allow us to go search.

I called the Sheriff's office in Clay County and they said, "An announcement will be made on the news when it's time." Good thing they aren't in a hurry.

If you're in Jacksonville and would like a ride when the search begins, please email me privately.
Great of you to donate this space to the greater effort of finding her, Jodi. Thumbs up.
Good job, Jodi. Hope they find her soon, and fine.
I am hoping that Florida is part of the Amber Alert system. This needs wide attention.

Good job, Jodi. Off to Digg it to help get more exposure.
Oh my God...a parent's worse nightmare. Thanks for the info Jodi.
Good use of your blog space Jodi. I hope she's home soon.

Light and love to Somer and her family.
Sometimes the ugly reality of Life intrude into our internet playground in a devistating way, this is one of those times. It is a terrible feeling to know, as i sit here at my computer all warm and safe, that there is a little girl out there somewhere who is scared and wants her mommy....God I hate this.
It really makes me remember what is important. I have a little girl walking home from school today. I hope to God that someone would take the time to use their blog or take an evening walking the woods to help her.
oh my...sigh...now i'm crying again
great reporting!
What everyone else said!
I will hold this in my heart and send light and love to all involved!
Too many sad stories!
I just came from Mr Mustard's story of Winky. Weird synchronistic pairing!
Poor little girl!!!!!!!!
Saying prayers for her parents and that she's found quickly, and well!!!
What a beautiful little baby. I hope she's found.
Nothing chills a parent's blood faster than news like that. Thanks for using our eyeballs, Jodi.
Envisioning Somer in her mother's arms, a joyful reunion, smiles all around, things put to right, little girl back home again...
Much light and love going out into the ether. Thank you for doing this.
UPDATE: Right now, the Clay County Sheriff's Department is using bloodhounds to try to find little Somer. This is why a public search of the area is not active. When it is, I'll will post details here.
I hope Somer gets home safe and sound.
Thank you to everyone for taking a look at this. I know I'm just a drop in the bucket, but if even one person could help this little girl --- well, stranger things have happened.
Sending this to the top of the feed again.
This is a great use of the OS website. Is there anyway of getting an EP so more people read it? Good luck.
God, these stories are always so awful. I hope she makes it home safely, soon. Good for you for publicizing this.
Bravo! Good for you! Rated!
Thanks for the info, Jodi. This is tragic. The really tragic thing is that this happens pretty often.
I haven't seen her. California from Florida... well it takes more than twelve hours. But I hope desperately for her sake she'll soon be home with her family again. My heart aches for her parents.

Hooray for you, Jodie, using your blog space for this purpose.
UPDATE: The phone number of Clay County Sheriff's Office has been updated to 1-877-227-6911

Thank you to everyone who is taking the time to look at Somer's photograph. She is here in the world somewhere and I'm hoping so hard that we can find her.

It has been almost 24 hours since she disappeared. She could now be almost anywhere in the eastern U.S. If you live in Jacksonville or the surrounding areas, visit your neighbors, look in passing cars and watch at visitor's centers, gas stations and rest areas.

At this exact time yesterday, Somer was walking home with her brother, alive, well and happy.
Jodi, Somer has been on my mind today. This is always so disturbing when a child goes missing and it affects us all. I am hoping with all my energy that something breaks soon. Her mother....
Bump for the feed.
Bumpty-bumpty-bump!
Updated to reflect changes to the search.
another bump for this. I wish we had a car or something to look for. Here in Dowell I don't see a lot of people up close but we are a major path on the backroads and I tend to notice cars and trucks that don't belong there.
The Clay County Sheriff spoke at length this morning and said, "We've got nothing." No descriptions, no cars, no tags, no leads.

My heart absolutely breaks for this little girl and her family. Nationally, they aren't really talking about it, but our Navy boys are out here in force leaving no stone unturned looking for this baby. I'm so proud of them.

If she's hiding somewhere, I know our sailors can find her.

At this point, it's highly unlikely that she's run off or hiding. Some animal has taken this child. The helpless rage I feel about that happening eight miles from where my children walk home from school to their father's house makes me want to beat the hell out of whoever did this.

I hope the coward loses their nerve and drops her off at a restaurant somewhere. That's the best we can hope for right now. There's nothing else to do but pray harder.

I'm going to go hug my kids now.
Oh Jodi...

This is a terrible outcome. My heart goes out to the Somers and to your whole community.
JK - I can't get the mother out of my head. It's hard enough to see when these poor kids are somewhere else, but knowing that the poor woman is losing her heart just a few miles away is heartbreaking.

I want to go to her and hug her.
What a horrible, horrible day for our city.
Oh, god, that poor little angel.
I just logged on and saw the headline on my homepage.

Even if it's not Somer, it's somebody else's child. I hate that we live in a world where this happens.
I would ask what the world is coming to, but there is nothing in this world that someone can do to hurt or violate another human being that hasn't already been done. It happens no more or less than it ever has. There are just more of us now.

There have always been children who are stolen, used and then thrown in the trash. There always will be.

No God or Goddess is present in that moment - only the ugliest of humanity.
I stand with the other hundreds of thousands of people in my city who send love and support. I am proud of our city in the face of this horrific tragedy. The support for this family has been enormous.

We are the majority of humanity. The monsters are few - but we will find them.

Bless her little heart.
I heard the update on the six o'clock news. I wanted to go outside and scream.

My head hopes it isn't her.
for all of us who have children, for all of us who do not and have empathy...this is more than heartbreaking. I'm filled with despair.
This story brought back all the nightmares of earlier this summer when our community in southeast Michigan suffered the death of Neveah Buchanan, also 5, who was buried alive in a ditch by a river in Monroe Co. They are still looking for her killers. The photos of these two girls are so similar with their beautiful dark hair and smiling faces.

My heart goes out to your community, and to the family of this innocent little girl. The person who did this should be found and made to suffer.
Just picked this up on the newswire; it's her. Damn.

I hope the good people of Jacksonville find this sonofabitch. How could anyone do that to a child?

I gotta say this too, that sheriff disappoints the hell out of me. He CALLED THE PARENTS to let them know. How the hell does something like that warrant a PHONE CALL? Someone should have gone to the house, told them in person, made sure they had someone there.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
Tragic. My heart goes out to her family.
Very sad. Found, but not in the way that makes for happy endings.
We were pretty certain yesterday that it was her. The sheriff sent three guys up with very specific information about which garbage was from Somer's neighborhood and they found her very quickly.

I don't know why the sheriff would have called them. They've been camped in that family's front yard since Somer went missing. The Amber alert was delayed until the morning after she went missing, so some folks around here are unhappy about that as well.

Overall, I think they are doing the best that they can with a bad situation. The problem is, we have absolutely no clue who did this to that little girl. The sheriff has said that they have no suspects and no idea how she died yet.

Monday morning my kids go back to that side of the river where a killer lives who will dump a baby in the trash after doing God knows what to her. I am livid. I want to tear their head off with my bare hands.
A bank account has been set up for the family in the name of Somer Thompson. Anyone interested in assisting the family with expenses related to Somer's death can do so at any area Vystar Credit Union. The account number is 0702794000.
I just read where they found this poor little girl's body. Jodi, I am so sorry. I pray they find the killer quickly. Horrible, simply horrible.
