Have you even thought about Japan, or what's going on over there, lately? Or has it been one of those "out of sight, out of mind" sort of things, due to the extreme lack of news coverage? There seems to be good reason for the activities in Japan not to be hot topic issues. Making Chernobyl look like a summer BBQ, Fukoshima is a sacrificial temple, a Kamikaze mission, a suicide pact.
Thousands of Japanese are working shifts at the plant, each one knowing this will be their last job. Wearing paper suits only keeps the radioactive particles off their skin, but does nothing for the Gamma, Alpha, Beta, and other rays from penetrating their flesh, mutating cells, and DNA as they pass through.
And with all this sacrifice, the situation isn't getting any better. Once a reactor melts down, there's no containing it. It can't just be scooped up and put in the trash, or where ever. It presents a whole new set of challenges, so far, with no solutions. The plan so far seems to be, no plan. The possibility of a meltdown were so remote, no contingency plan was ever really taken seriously. Wrong move. So meanwhile we got a puddle of melted nuclear fuel rods, gurgling, and spewing radiation all over everything. The problem now seems to be, cooling, again. When you have a pool of molten anything, dumping water on it presents a new hazard, instant high temperature steam, highly radioactive steam, lots of it, everywhere. Until they figure out a way to contain the melted down fuel puddle, it's just going to emit goodies into the atmosphere for all to enjoy. At least with Chernobyl they got it contained in a somewhat reasonable amount of time, Fukoshima, there's no containment in sight yet. That's not good.

This is so not good.
Glad you mention it. More need to.
And, Los Alomos, that's almost funny, we have brush clearence regulations where I live, and penalties for noncompliance. One would think New Mexico should adopt some sort of regulations around nuclear facilities. And maybe around some of the bioweapons labs we have scattered around the country.
