In the beginning there was..............nothing. Well, close to nothing. I started my interests, or rather hatred for computers at the very beginning. The year, somewhere around 1976, when the Sinclair Z-80 personal confuser first hit the market. With a whopping 1k of memory- total, no operating system, no software, no hard drive, no monitor, but it did come with an impedence matching transformer to hook up to your TV set. Still, it had more computing power than a pocket calculator, or Apollo 11, one of them. And the thrill of watching what you type appear on your TV set, in black and white, was short lived. Then came the Commodore 64, ooooooo, with a huge 64k of memory, and in color no less. Again the thrill, less than a week. Having to write your own software was a pain. But there was alway's "Prodigy" the first lamo attempt at "internet". The 4 bit color was astounding, if you were slightly retarded. Then I moved into the big boy's league with my IBM AT PC. And it's green monitor, 4.77 Khz processor speed, and an unthinkable 150 MEGA BYTES of hard disk storage. Whoooah. But the green screen sucked for graphics. In fact, graphics weren't even invented yet, spreadsheet city, boy-o. If you were into number crunching, you couldn't beat it. But when it came to upgrades, nothing worked. I mean NOTHING. And the printer, I believe was made from an old Toyota.
Here we are 35 years later, and nothing works. Sometimes I get lucky, not often. The other day, my system was running like a champ, except for one glitch, Open Salon. Between imaging software, ISO's, system restores, burnt images, unburnt ISO's, images on a USB drive, bad images, I now have an operating system, a browser, and Open Salon, PERIOD. Years worth of digital music, pictures, crap, bookmarks gone. But I got Open Salon. Please excuse me while I go hang myself.

If you do lose data (which i think is what you are saying here) there are a lot of good data recovery programs.
I can let you know the best if you PM me.
You forgot to add about upgrading memory yourself with the old ribbons and soldering irons
on the old Amiga 1500(with keyboard on a wire, for super comfort!).
You are right about all these years later things are still not gelling together...
