East Carolina redshirt freshman defensive back Leonard Paulk and junior running back Jonathan Williams will not be playing in the Liberty Bowl against the Arkansas Razorbacks today. They have been indefinitely suspended after coming to blows in a dispute over a dessert during the Liberty Bowl awards luncheon which took place yesterday in Memphis, Tenn., the bowl's host city.
According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal and ESPN.com, "Paulk and Williams scuffled during the AutoZone Liberty Bowl awards luncheon and nearly flipped over a table while fighting over a dessert. ...One player had the other in a headlock and was hitting him."
According to reports, players from both teams, as well as coaches and dignitaries from both schools were fortunate enough to get a glimpse of Operation Dessert Storm.
But here is the funny part: It took a 24 hour investigation to decide to suspend the two pugilists.
Per ECU Coach Skip Holtz, "We had an incident yesterday that as a football coach I've taken about 24 hours to look at, to research and get into amongst our team. I have made the decision to suspend two players for this game. I will suspend running back Jon Williams and defensive back Leonard Paulk. I think both players were equally wrong in this incident. So we have made the decision to suspend them both indefinitely."
Wow. That must have been a really good dessert. According to Rivals.com, it was a slice of cheescake that led to the battle. I'm sure Deadspin will have their take on the situtation posted soon, if not already.
